Middle School Holidays/Seasonal Independent Work Packet

This is a fun seasonal Christmas and Winter Holiday geography activity that students will find engaging and fun!

This is a great lesson for the week before Winter/Holiday Break. Students will take a Christmas journey around the world! If you need an activity for 1-2 days, this lesson is easy to modify to the time limitations you may have. Not only will they have fun, but they will be learning to work together to complete the tasks! Every moment is a teaching moment.

This lesson takes students on a journey using Journey Cards to cities and towns around the world that have Christmas names. Students will work in teams and will use Google Earth Online to explore each location on the Journey Cards as well as practice plotting the absolute location of each location. Students will look at the location, the physical characteristics, and fun facts. Every moment is a teaching moment, even those days before the holiday break.

OBJECTIVES:

(1) The learner will plot the coordinates of towns with Christmas names on a coordinate plot map using latitude and longitude (Absolute Location).

(2) The learner will explore cities and towns around the world with Christmas and winter-themed names using Google Earth.
(3) The learner will identify the continent, hemisphere, physical features, and interesting physical or cultural facts related to each city or town.
(3) The learner will evaluate and compare the towns and cities' location, environment, and living conditions to determine where they would most and less likely live.

Mystery picture

♣ Print out 1 mystery picture per student.

♣ Students cut up the answer tiles and then place them on the correct question tiles to match the words with the definitions.

♣ They can glue the question tiles onto the answer tiles and color the picture too.

Diwali Sudoku

♣ Print out 1 sudoku per student.

♣ Students cut off the right side of the sheet along the dotted line and cut out the missing sudoku pictures. They glue them into the sudoku grid so that all 6 words appear in each row, column and 2x3 frame.

♣ Each word must appear in each row, column and 2x3 frame only once.

♣ Check with the whole class - students have to name in English all pictures in the given row, column or 2x3 frame.

Clifford's Halloween is a great holiday book for students to read to learn about Halloween, other holidays such as Christmas, New Year's Eve, Valentine's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, are briefly reviewed in this product as well, the kinds of activities that can be carried out at Halloween parties, what the characters wanted to dress up as for Halloween, and Halloween safety tips, and how to stay safe on Halloween. Students can answer these questions as the book is read to them, as they read the book independently or they can use the text for lookbacks once the book is finished. Students will answer questions that reflect on a field trip that they went on to a pumpkin farm/pumpkin patch. Questions relate with going to a pumpkin patch/farm, what a pumpkin patch is, is explained, students will answer other questions relating to what they did on their field trip, what the weather was like when they went to the pumpkin patch, what was the first thing they did when they arrived at the pumpkin patch, where do pumpkins grow, the different colors of pumpkins are explained and students will answer the question about what color pumpkins they saw at the pumpkin patch, students will label the internal and external parts of a pumpkin using a key, after they are shown diagrams that are labeled of pumpkins, students will be provided with names of what kinds of popular foods have pumpkin in them and will label the food items using a key on another page in this product, students will reflect on what other items, besides pumpkins were for sale at the pumpkin patch, what their favorite thing was about the field trip, and what kind of equipment they may have seen at a pumpkin patch.

Students will be required to write answers in sentences - short or detailed and fill in the blanks in this product when provided with a key.
