They will love moving around the room as you click through the 40 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! You will love this well-organized activity that allows students to test their knowledge, get exposure to high-quality examples, and even learn something new! This is an activity I use in my classroom every year during our narrative writing unit and I know your students will love it!

STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE
After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")
*As an optional follow-up activity, use my No-Prep Figurative Language Short Passage Set resource to assess individual understanding, homework, or assessment!
REFLECTION:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text and each chapter. Students will have the opportunity to answer questions about the main character, Abby and what she is dealing with as she navigates school as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and example sentences are presented in the packet. Students can also write sentences using the vocabulary words. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet. Halloween Collaborative Writing Activity

This resource features a creative lesson plan that will actually keep your candy-filled students quiet and engaged on Halloween!
Halloween Collaborative Story Time is a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique Halloween-themed photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.
With this intrinsically engaging activity, each student has the chance to tap into their creativity while applying knowledge of the 7 steps of Freytag's Pyramid. It is a great activity to introduce or reinforce the plot diagram and is IDEAL for Halloween as it is so fun for students, yet designed as a nice quiet activity, regardless of the sugar rush! Since the lesson runs itself, it is also great for a substitute or on those days when you need a quick plan to get you through the day. I trust you will find that your students will ask for this activity again and again!

Students read a non-fiction news article (included in the packet) and connect it to the book We Beat The Street. The lesson focuses on Chapter 3, George's relationship with his third grade teacher, Miss Johnson. Similarly, the news article and video focus on one gang member's positive experience with an influential teacher - like George's teacher, Miss Johnson.
► The link to the news article and video are provided in the lesson plan.
► Students will specifically recognize and compare the similar life-changing actions of the teachers in both the article and the book as well as their impact on the individuals.
✍ Short Response Writing Assignment ✍
In Chapter 3, we learn that Miss. Johnson, George's third grade teacher, has made George feel smart and special. She's one of several people who has motivated and inspired him to look beyond his circumstances, go to college, and become somebody big and important.
This resource includes a differentiated short response writing assignment where students will write about why Miss Johnson is an inspirational person in George's life. They will cite specific evidence from the text to support their responses and analysis. A rubric to score/evaluate your students' responses is included - 2 options to choose from.

STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE
First, review the three terms using the Mini-Lesson slide with examples.
Then, after reading each sentence on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “THERE,” “THEIR,” or “THEY'RE” depending on which word you think should fill the blank. There's an additional fun emoji slide for students who are unsure of the answer!
REFLECTION:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at writing without confusing using these homophones after being exposed to this high-quality kinesthetic review!

The book, Best Friends by Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham is great for children ages 7 - 13 years old, as they can relate with Shannon, the friends she makes along the way, the friendships she struggles to maintain, the lack of self confidence she has and she becomes more confident along the way, learning that it is okay not to be friends with everyone, the importance of friendship and not following the crowd or what your friends want you to do, doing things that you want to do - being a leader instead of a follower, and how to handle stressful situations, anxiety, conflict, and bullying. Students will follow Shannon along as she figures out where to fit in while in 6th grade and gets ready for junior high school. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and example sentences are presented in the packet. Students can also write vocabulary words in sentences. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet. An answer key is provided at the end of this product. Students can also answer comprehension questions towards the end of the packet as well that summarize the entire book.
