KWL Charts (Know, Want to Know, Learned) are a standard resource in many classrooms. While students’ familiarity with them makes them easy to explain and use, it also can become an exercise students no longer really think about as they complete.

The printable chart version included with this lesson takes that idea a step further and is perfect for inquiry and project based learning. It also works well for the “Genius Hour”, “Passion Project” or “20% Learning Projects” that are becoming more popular. The KWHLAQ Chart expands on the three basic questions as follows:

K – What do I know?

W – What do I want to know?

H – How will I find out?

L – What did I learn?

A – What action will I take?

Q – What questions do I still have?

Writer's Workshop - First Twenty Days outline This gives you a twenty day introduction to writers' workshop in the middle grades. From going through the rules of the workshop, to editing vs. conferencing, to the different genre of writing. Everything is covered or introduced in this twenty day plan. Although this is intended for use when the school year begins, it can easily be used at any point throughout the year to teach different aspects that are covered. This is a basic lesson plan template that is editable in Google Slides. It includes an overview of the week to show what each day's objective (I Can Statement) and standards are. It also includes a template for each day of the week. This includes a spot for the objective, standards, quick description of the lesson (Introduction, instruction, and small group), differentiation, assessment for the lesson, and a closure/connection to the real world.

I don’t know about you, but I love having options! Because of that, I have worked to provide different leveled newspaper templates. These could easily be combined into a multipage newsletter booklet if you so choose, or it could remain as a single page assignment. I also tried to make it so that you could have a “front page” and a content page if you printed front and back. It has helped my students write almost twice as fast, now that they had very specific boundaries and structure. The Short-Writes helped my students realize just how varied and strong their opinions were. They created a stepping stone that set up the next step of brainstorming and writing their Introductions. Description:

• This product contains templates to help students write an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion for an Expository Research Writing project on animals. The introduction has students begin with an interesting lead and include sentences with general and specific sentences on appearance, habitat, diet, life cycle, and predators. There are two introduction templates on one page. This page will simply need to be cut in half so that an introduction can be given to two students per page. The body paragraph template has space for four paragraphs with main idea titles and spaces for key words that will be turned into sentences. The key words will be found and highlighted in their research prior to filling out this template. This page will need to be printed front and back. Remind students to add transition words when they write their final draft. The conclusion has a blank for a transition word, which has helped my students remember to put one. It also contains three spaces for summary sentences and one space for a final feeling sentence to close the report. There are other instructions included in this packet.
