Valentine's Day Reading Comprehension and Sequencing Craft

Students will love this Valentine's Day themed, educational activity that goes along with one of my favorite Valentine's Day books: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose.

Use with the book There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Rose. Students can read the story and use the picture "leaves" to sequence the events of the story as they add leaves to their rose.

Includes a differentiated sequencing assessment (fill in the blank and multiple choice versions) along with a list of seven easy ways to differentiate instruction with this resource.

Use this poster to help your students learn how to identify if a word problem is calling for addition or subtraction. Print the chart as a poster to use as an interactive anchor chart with the large size word, or print as an independent worksheet with the smaller words. Use with my Word Problem task cards to expand the lesson and see their new skills in action by letting them sort the task cards! Clip art from Busy Bee Studio.

These stories each focus on a different vowel to encourage long and short vowel sounds identification and differentiation. The stories also allow students the opportunity to practice sequencing the events in the story after they've read it.

Use dice to roll and write single digit math problems. Laminate for repeated use or use as is to collect as a work sample.

Use these mats for small groups or independent practice with one or two dice. Students roll the dice, count the dots, use manipulatives to represent the number, locate the number, and practice writing the number. Print and laminate the sheet or put it in a page protector to use with a dry erase marker for repeated use.

Updated to include a version of the mats with tens frames to help "make" the numbers.

Students will count pictures in a ten frame and in a collection and match them to the corresponding number.

Based on ability level, students can use the single tens frame and the number cards to represent a given number using manipulatives. Students who are ready for more of a challenge can roll dice to create an addition problem and use the tens frames to represent and solve the addition problem using manipulatives.

Print, laminate, and cut the Easter egg halves. Students will match the lowercase letter to a word that begins with the same sound. Prints four to a page. Clip art from Anika and Lisa Markle Sparkles. Recording sheet is included for students to practice writing letters and record what letter they matched to what sound. With four differentiated versions of the text and two differentiated assignments, this Valentine's Day activity is perfect for every student in your class!

Work on independent reading by choosing which of the four differentiated passages is most appropriate for each student. After reading, students can take a reading comprehension assessment (short answer and multiple choice versions available) and participate in a writing assignment (with available sentence stems).

This resource is ready to print and go! No PREP necessary.

Students will use these sentence parts to answer who, what, when, where, and why to build a sentence or short story. Handwriting paper is included with a box at the top to illustrate the sentence/story they wrote with their WH sentence strips. Print the WH question page on colorful paper for even more fun.

Use these labels on the front of a three-drawer bin to allow the students the opportunity to self-assess how well they think they know the material covered. Students can choose from "I've got this!", "I still need some help with this," and "I don't understand this yet." This allows teachers to gauge the students' self-awareness. Trim to fit drawers.

Students will build number sense and practice identifying place value with this set of task cards with four digit numbers.

Cards include four digit numbers written in standard form, expanded form, word form, and represented with base ten block clip art.

Directions and ideas for differentiation are included.

Can be combined with my two and three digit cards.

Students can use this blending board to "drive" small cars to each letter, stopping at the circles to state the letter sounds. Students can "drive" the cars faster or more slowly to practice blending sounds to make words.
