How can I incorporate poetry into my daily/weekly lessons? You may have asked yourself this question. Solid Read Alouds is the answer! Solid Read Alouds connect poetry to your classroom read aloud. Solid Read Alouds not only connect poetry but enhance your curriculum with monthly themes and national observance days. The Inventor Read Aloud is designed for a daily, one week time period. However, the unit can easily be stretched into two weeks or incorporated into a writing workshop. The read aloud will include: poetry, partner activity, and nonfiction selection. The unit also includes: comprehension work, anchor chart ideas and printables, inventor/invention cards, inventor bingo-type activity, and penmanship work. Inventor Read Aloud includes fifteen inventor/invention cards. We realize there are thousands of inventors that could have been included in this unit. This product is designed to enhance your curriculum, incorporate poetry, and infuse common core state standards into your teaching. While reading this book and answering these questions, students will learn about pollution, endangered animals, surviving in our environment, importance of clean air, water, and healthy soil to grow food, planting trees when trees are cut down, ecology, conservation, recycling, reducing pollution in your community, things to recycle, and how to help your environment. In this packet, students can also complete a mini endangered animal report where they will be required to chose an endangered animal from the list provided and answer questions about that animal, such as where it lives (habitat), what it eats, how long it lives for, interesting facts about that animal, etc. Students can answer the short answer questions, yes/no questions, multiple choice questions, and vocabulary/picture labeling questions as the book is read to them, as they read the book independently or they can use the text for lookbacks once the book is finished. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and examples of the words used in sentences are presented. Students have the opportunity to use those words in sentences as well.

Solid Read Aloud is a monthly classroom read aloud that focuses on poetry for first, second, and third graders. The following poems and books are used throughout the unit: Bats, Flying Bats, and Those Bats from Can Teach; Stellaluna by Janell Cannon; Bats by Gail Gibbons. The Bat Solid Read Aloud is designed for a week long duration. During this week the read aloud will include: poetry, fiction, and nonfiction selections. Also included, poetry writing connection, graphic organizers, writing project, and art connection. This read aloud plan can easily be extended to fit a two week duration. The read aloud week will culminate with an art project which is used to display the students’ final writing piece. Additional Solid Read Aloud units include: September Solid Read Aloud - Good Neighbor Day Reptiles - October Sundae Day - November April Solid Read Aloud - Earth Day Monthly units will be added throughout the school year.
