This is a fun and musical way to discuss a tough subject on plate boundaries and how they affect the African Rift Valley along a divergent plate boundary where the Somali Plate and African Plate are drifting apart. In millions of years, this could cause not only East Africa to become a new small continent, but would create a new ocean.

This lesson incorporates music as a learning tool. Students will enjoy the new rendition of the song Breaking Up is Hard to Do. It is a love song from West Africa to the East African Rift Valley. An original teacher-created MP3 of the song is included in this lesson.

OBJECTIVES:

1. The learner will listen to and analyze the song.
2. The learner will understand how physical processes shape patterns in the physical environment specific to tectonic plated forces.
3. The learner will describe different landforms such as trenches and lakes near Africa’s Great Rift Valley and the physical processes that cause their development.
4. The student will explore how people, places, and environments changed over time and the effects of these changes.
5. The student will demonstrate their understanding of the causes and effects of environmental changes on people and the economy.

Fairy Tale Scenarios

This is a 3 part individual/group assignment where groups (of 4-6) are given a problem based on a well known fairy tale where students have to write and perform their solution to the problem. Students will write out a monologue individually and as a group will write the body of the script. After the groups have resolved their problem, each group member will have a chance to reflect on how their character feels after the resolution of the problem. This activity would be appropriate for middle school students. This package will provide your students with hours of entertainment that include opportunities to write and showcase their creativity. This novel study is for "The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus" by L. Frank Baum. L. Baum offers students the chance to examine the origins of Santa Claus in this classic novel. What can Africa teach the world about government? Africa's government system has experienced various types of government from democracies to republics to autocracies. This is a comprehensive cooperative activity for students to explore the various governments of Africa while learning or reviewing the government systems. It can also be completed individually if the instructor chooses not to have students work in groups.

The lesson ends with a Big Picture Question: What can Africa teach the world about Government?

OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the structure of various African government systems.
• Compare and contrast African government systems.
• Decipher the difference between autocracy and democracy.
• Decipher the difference between parliamentary democracy and presidential democracy, as well as a parliamentary republic and presidential republic.
• Recognize that lines are often blurred when it comes to government systems and how they are function.

This lesson will require research provisions: Internet, encyclopedias, books on Africa focused on government.

SAMPLE OF PROCEDURE:

The students will work in groups of two (2) or three (3) to complete the assignment.

Provide each group/student with a What Does Africa Have To Teach The World About Government? Have the group read it over together. Students will, then, work in groups to complete the Country Government Profile guide sheet, examining the structure of a government chosen by the student/group. They will use the What Does Africa Have To Teach The World About Government? in which to refer when needed during the Country Government Profile. Give the students approximately 30 minutes to complete the activity.
