Kafka's Metamorphosis Escape Room

By Language Arts Excellence

Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis is not an easy text to grasp, even for adults. This escape room is the perfect way to review the renowned tale in a fun yet rigorous way so that your students come away from the lesson with a greater understanding of Kafka's existentialist masterpiece.

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task (and it is!), but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. Your students will be having so much fun that they won’t even realize the higher order thinking skills they are applying in the playing of this game.

How does it work?

In this escape room, your students have inexplicably transformed into "horrible vermin" and can only turn back into normal teenagers by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering codes, and finding clues along the way.

  • Crossword Puzzle: In the first task, students solve a crossword puzzle with questions about literary elements, quotes, and plot details within Metamorphosis.
  • Literary Match Up: In the second task, students draw lines to match passages within the story to the literary element they represent. (Elements included: 3 types of irony, alliteration, onomatopoeia, simile, metaphor, personification)
  • Missing Word: In the third task, students fill in the blanks of notable quotes within the story.
  • Plot it Out: In the fourth task, students must order the plot events of Metamorphosis on Freytag's Pyramid.
  • Jig Saw Quote: In the final task, students must complete a jig saw puzzle (2 separate puzzles included for differentiation) that reveals a quote from Franz Kafka that connects to major themes within Metamorphosis. Once they figure it out and bring it to you, your students transform back into human beings!

This narrative encourages insightful responses from work. 11th Graders will love this prose and product. Check it out!

***What are LESSON ACTIVITIES?***

***HOW TO USE LESSON ACTIVITIES***

SUMMARY:

Horton's Bay used to be a bustling mill town, but the mill has recently been deserted. Nick and Marjorie row on the lake, setting up fishing rods for trout. Marjorie enjoys spending time together with Nick; she gets to daydream. However, after sitting down for a picnic lunch, Nick picks a fight to make Marjorie leave him and end their budding relationship. She takes the boat and tells Nick to walk home alone. After she leaves, another friend, Bill, comes along to confirm that Nick has broken off the relationship.

This 11th grade canonized work allows students to navigate Americana through these characters and memorable story line.

What's Inside?

  • 62 Slides: Detailed presentations that guide teachers and students through the narrative, themes, and context of "The End of Something."

  • Several Projects: Creative projects that allow students to explore and express their understanding in unique ways. Some are group, paired, and individual. You get to choose which projects your class has the time for, and what each period can handle.

  • Group Activities: Collaborative tasks that encourage teamwork and deepen comprehension through discussion and shared insights. Fun and engaging group assignments that will have the quiet students want to participate. Some are for sitting at a desk, but some are for moving throughout the classroom and the building. This is where admin might throw a fit!

  • Graphic Organizers: Tools to help students organize their thoughts and analyze key elements of the story. Charts and organizers for differentiated instruction helps to make all learners understand the prose. Also, you can have students complete these individually, in pairs, or groups.

  • Reflections: Prompts that inspire personal connections and critical thinking about the text. I have to incorporate reflective assignments that have students revisit their learning and through revisiting the text. They'll be going back and forth with themselves, through the text, and with each other to "find proof and evidence" of their thought-processes.

  • VIDEO Assignments: Group, paired, or individual multimedia assignments that bring the story to life and engage visual and auditory learners. Your students get to make a documentary, by going to people outside of their classroom to get footage. Other assignments allow students to create presentations to share with the class. Your technology standards are met with this resource.

  • Short Response Assignments: Quick, targeted writing and discussion tasks that reinforce key concepts and encourage concise, thoughtful responses. Characterization, themes, symbols, and the like are found throughout this resource. You are use any of these creative, fun, and engaging assignments for assessment. Rigor starts from Slide 7. However, if you are more a traditionalist, pick up the End of Something essay exams in the bundle or the store.

Figurative Language Short Passage | Set 2 | Close Reading | ELA Writing Activity

By Perfectly Planned Designs

This Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. This is a 206-word passage filled with 14 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Check out my other figurative language passage sets HERE!

Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep Four Corners Figurative Language Activity resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

INCLUDED WITH YOUR PURCHASE:

  • 3 Printable Worksheets

Figurative Language Short Passage | Set 1 | Close Reading | ELA Writing Activity

By Perfectly Planned Designs

This Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. This is a 205-word passage filled with 14 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification.

The Beans and Rice Chronicles of Isaiah Dunn by Kelly J. Baptist LESSON

By Ms. J's ELA

This resource should accompany the short story The Beans and Rice Chronicles of Isaiah Dunn by Kelly J. Baptist. The page numbers listed in this resource align with the book Flying Lessons and Other Stories. This resource includes 4 pages of both color and b/w worksheets which include a pre-reading journal question, tiered reading questions, vocabulary, and a focus on supporting analysis with textual evidence. A 10 page presentation accompanies the worksheets and includes an answer key.

This is a sensitive story. One of the tiered reading questions addresses coping strategies in times of grief. This question needs to be approached in an open, honest, non-judgmental way. If this is not the way you operate, skip this resource.

Marionettes, Inc. Escape Room

By Language Arts Excellence

Get ready to have the most fun you'll have teaching with a creepy lesson that your students will be talking about for years to come with Ray Bradbury's All Marionettes, Inc. ESCAPE ROOM!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for Marionettes, Inc. by Ray Bradbury.

In this escape room, students will try to escape Braling's dark basement by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles about Marionettes, Inc., discovering codes, and finding clues along the way.

  • Figuratively Speaking: In the first task, students must identify figurative language devices within the story.
  • Plot it Out: In the second task, students must order the plot events of Marionettes, Inc. on Freytag's Pyramid.
  • Crossword Puzzle: In the third task, students must solve a crossword puzzle with questions about characters, literary elements, quotes, and plot events.
  • Vocab Match Up: In the fourth task, students fill in the blanks with vocabulary words from the story.
  • Word Search: In the final task, students must complete a word search using the codes they discovered in the first four tasks. The letters that remain form a quote that aligns with themes of the story. Once they figure it out and bring it to you, students may escape Braling's basement!

Product Includes:

  • Escape Room Basics
  • Detailed Day-Of Instructions
  • Escape Room Print Checklist
  • Student Teams Chart
  • Materials for 5 Tasks: task signs to be folded upright, task instructions (2 per page for easy printing), and necessary information to be kept at stations
  • Student Answer Sheet
  • Teacher Answer Keys
  • Escape Room Reflection for homework or in-class writing activity
  • Theme Reflection for homework assignment or in-class writing activity

Because this is a skills-based escape room, it is perfect for a review of the story before the test.
