These fans each contain a different emotion face and word. They can be used for activities and teaching about emotions or alternatively can be used to support non-verbal children to express their emotions.

Why do you need this?

If children learn to understand and recognise emotions both in themselves and others, learning to identify and label them then this can ensure they will be better equipped to manage and regulate themselves when they experience strong emotions. If children are able to notice how they are feeling and then use strategies to calm themselves down then they are more likely to have successful friendships and to be able to manage set backs.

How and when might you use this?

The 15 illustrated fan pieces each feature a different emotion face and word. Expressions like happy, sad, angry, surprised, and more build children's emotional vocabulary. Teachers can prompt conversations about when we feel certain ways and how our faces show it.

An eco-map is often used an assessment tool in clinical mental health settings, but can be a beneficial SEL activity for social awareness. This exercise can be modified for small children all the way through adults.

The graph asks the participant to picture their social life as an ecosystem where they are at the center. In the blank space around them they can write in all of their formal and informal social ties and resources they have. (For younger children I suggest offering the option to draw the people in their life!) For further reflection, the participant can then add a + to signify if the person/resource is a positive part of their life, a - to signify if the person/resource is a negative part of their life, or write +- to signify a give and take relationship.

I use this worksheet along with social awareness lessons to encourage students to think about who they can ask for help from, who they have as supports, or reflect on relationships. It also allows you to gain insight into your students' life and resources outside of the classroom.

It’s essential that young people develop empathy for those who are different to them. This resource examines the short story of a teenage boy who kept his LGBTQ+ identity a secret from even his closest friends out of fear of being rejected and losing them. He eventually musters the courage to reveal his only secret to his best friend Jacob. To both Ethan and the reader's surprise, Jacob's reaction and response leaves readers feeling inspired and better understanding the positive impact empathy and a willingness to listen and act can be on an LGBTQ+ individual.

Many LGBTQ+ students will find themselves struggling with the unknown. The way in which students respond to LGBTQ+ identities and relationships could provide key support and understanding for their peers. Within our classrooms, we may have teens who are discovering their own sexual identity. This resource, and story, highlights positive ways that students might respond to their LGBTQ+ peers.

Through reading the passage and delving into reflection questions, your students will learn important ways to show empathy and support for others. Students will also recognize and examine examples of unsupportive behaviors and actions that can be hurtful to LGBTQ+ friends who fear coming out or just came out. They will make connections between these key ideas and the passage under study. They will also learn about why many LGBTQ+ teens hide or disguise their sexual orientation and/or gender identity for and brainstorm healthy coping strategies to help navigate LGBTQ+ conflicts related to coming out.
