10th Grade Social Emotional Learning Activities

This lesson emphasizes where students derive their sense of identity from and how to go about exploring their self-identity, with a no-prep activity to practice.

Older kids are capable of not just knowing characteristics about themselves, but starting to deepen their self-identity with understanding of why they are the person they are. Students will explore their self-identity while considering that they have social roles and influences that shape how they understand themselves.

If age appropriate, this can lead to discussion about family/community patterns. I find children often know their triggers and problem behaviors, but if they can identify why they have a trigger self-compassion can be applied and solutions may become more clear.

Ex. My older brother is in all honors classes and my parents compare me to him. This makes academic corrections and poor grades a big trigger for me because it reminds me of that feelings I get at home.

The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.

This reading passage examines the short story of a high school boy who shares an embarrassing photo of a girl he doesn’t like, attempting to make her upset. Students will explore the motivations behind his actions and evaluate the way high school students treat one another.

This reading passage examines the short story of a girl hiding the fact that she is being bullied from her best friend. Students will study the value of friendship during difficult times and evaluate how bullying can affect relationships.

This reading passage examines the short story of a girl reflecting on her experience with cyberbullying. As the severity of her problem increases, students will evaluate the effects of online bullying and the best ways one can deal with it.

Some of the questions require students to put their feet in the shoes of characters who are experiencing a problem. In this product, students will review how you may feel when you are overwhelmed, what you can do when you feel overwhelmed, and vocabulary words - overwhelmed and stressed and what they mean. When students are reading each story, they will review how one would feel if they were feeling overwhelmed.
