10th Grade European History Activities

This lesson is over the European Landmarks of the Parthenon in Greece, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Colosseum in Italy, Big Ben in England, Sagrada Familia in Spain, and Brandenburg Gate in Germany. Student will read facts about each landmark and then answer questions about each one. Students will also identify each landmark on a map of Europe.

This lesson explores the purposes of the European Union and the relationship between member countries. This lesson includes a PowerPoint introductory presentation (game), reading activity, timeline activity, comparison T-chart, grading rubric, exit cards as well as detailed teacher instructions. Very little preparation is required. A zip file reader is required to open the file.

• The learner will create a timeline of events that lead to the development of the European Union.
• The learner will be able to explain the purpose of the European Union.
• The learner will consider why some groups support or oppose the European Union.

The Industrial Revolution, often categorized into the First Industrial Revolution and Second Industrial Revolution, marked a transitional phase in the global economy towards more extensive, efficient, and consistent manufacturing methods, following the Second Agricultural Revolution. Initiating in Great Britain circa 1760, the Industrial Revolution extended to continental Europe and the United States by approximately 1840. This shift involved moving from manual production techniques to machinery; novel chemical manufacturing and iron production methods; a greater reliance on water and steam power; the creation of machine tools; and the emergence of the mechanized factory system. Production significantly surged, leading to an unparalleled increase in both population and the pace of population growth. The textile sector was the pioneer in adopting modern manufacturing techniques, making textiles the leading industry regarding employment, output value, and capital investment.

Each slide contains text taking students through Ávila’s past (its incredible walls, towers and cathedral) and present-day life with some views of the city!  The text is mainly written in both present and past (preterite and imperfect) and therefore is great for Years 2, 3 and 4. It comes in a Spanish and English version, and students must follow the clues to help solve a crime.  The clues take them all around Spain where they will learn about various aspects of the culture.  Each clue they solve reveals the next clue! Need to motivate your Spanish students?  Want to incorporate more REAL culture into your classes? Need them to work together?  This digital escape room is a FUN way to do both!  Students must watch and read the Google slides and also do some research of their own to help solve a crime. Students can complete this challenge in school or digitally from home! No-prep fun activity for ALL of your classes!

Some important objects have been stolen from the Soccer Museum at Camp Nou in Barcelona.  Help the police chase down the thieves as you travel around Spain!  To find the next clue, students must answer cultural questions about Spain.  From those answers, they must figure out codes that will open digital locks (in a google form).  Students get the next set of pictures and clues after each lock is opened! 

This Escape Room is suitable for all middle and high school students.  It focuses on famous places and interesting cultural details, not on grammar.  This resource comes in a Spanish version appropriate for students in Year 3 and up, and also an English version for Novice Spanish students or any student interested in Spanish culture!  It’s a great way to get students talking to each other at the beginning of the year, or a fun way to wrap up a school year too! Need a brain break from the normal curriculum? This should do the trick!

This is a quick study on Queen Elizabeth II and how she governed during her 70-year reign. Having inherited the Crown at an early age, she was not ready to be Queen, but was thrust into the position overnight. This lesson was written the day after her passing in September 8, 2022, and is written in past-tense.

Through this study students will:

o Become familiar with the duties of Queen Elizabeth as the Monarch and head of state.

o Understand the duties of the three branches of the government.

o Understand the difference between an absolute and constitutional monarchy.

o Become familiar with Queen Elizabeth and what her life was like as Queen.

MATERIALS:

o Student Reading Activity (Included: 2 pages)

o Comparison Chart

o Would You Want to Be Queen or King in a Constitutional Monarch? (Exit Card)

o Access to the Internet for the comparison chart as they will need to research an absolute monarchy. (or) You may print off an article from the Internet to for each group to use. Here is one that compares the two.

PREPARATION:

o Print out a Reading Activity, 1 per group

o Print out a comparison chart, 1 per student or 1 per group (teacher’s choice)

o Print Reasoning Activity (Exit Card), 1 per student
