Black history month digital escape room - High School US History

By Frenchified

Make learning about Black History month  interesting with this no-prep digital escape game.  The game includes access to a website where your students will hunt for the keys to unlock a set of locks.  Students will need to read the clues very carefully and watch videos, visit websites, and read texts to find the information they need to win the game.  Very easy to use - just send your students to the website and let them work!  Students can play individually or in teams.

The local museum is hosting an exhibit, but the prize item is locked up tight in a box! Without the codes to unlock it, the museum can't put it on display. Help them out by finding the 5 codes that will unlock the box and save the day in this Black history month digital escape game.

Digital escape games are a fun way to start a unit, or to review at the end of a unit.  They can also be used to learn about a cultural or historical event.  This game will have your students reading carefully and paying attention to the smallest details in order to complete the challenge and unlock the locks.

This item includes:

  • Access to a website where your students can play the game
  • Complete teacher's guide to playing the game
  • Answer key so you can help students if they get stuck!

Your students will enjoy learning without even realizing that they are learning!  The challenging game format will get them excited about finding the code to unlock each lock - and the format of the clues for each lock will have them paying close attention - there's no way to solve the puzzles without being 100% focused!

Topics in this game include:

  • Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • Shirley Chisholm
  • Guion S. Bluford, Jr.
  • Ruby Bridges
  • Barack Obama

Prep is very easy - you just need to share the website URL with your students.  You may want to test the site before you use it, just to make sure nothing is blocked by your district.  As some of the clues can be challenging to unlock, you may choose to help your students with the trickier ones.  With the teacher guide, you will have the answer key - so you can help guide students towards the correct answer by giving them hints, or if you have limited time, you can adjust the game by reducing the number of locks they need to unlock - just give them the answer(s) to help the activity fit your time constraints.

Interpretive Reading | GLOBAL CHALLENGES | MLK Jr.

By Senorita Creativa

Do you struggle to incorporate real-world, authentic reading in your Spanish classroom? This amazing interpretive reading activity about the life and accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr. will get your kids reading and analyzing an authentic resource from the Spanish-speaking world.

In this activity, your students will:

  • identify vocabulary related to the civil rights movement
  • determine the main idea
  • identify supporting details
  • guess the meaning of words based on the context
  • answer comprehension questions
  • compare and contrast the US Civil Rights Movement with movements from other countries
  • write follow-up questions from the infographic

This reading and writing activity makes a great addition to any unit on human rights or global challenges, from Spanish 2 through AP (as an introduction to the unit). It also makes a great pre-reading activity for an article about human rights or the life of MLK, Jr (there are links to two suggested articles in the product and a short video). There are two versions of the handout: version 1 has all directions and questions in English, while version 2 has all directions and questions in Spanish.

PLEASE NOTE: the infographic is NOT included with this product due to copyright laws and you must access it at the following link: infographic. I would recommend printing and laminating the infographic, projecting it on your board, or posting it to Google Classroom, Edmodo, or Schoology for students to access it. Each handout includes the link to the image at the top as well as a QR code to the image at the bottom.
