This one-page Guided Reading and Assessment is for Grade 6-12 students and can be used in a variety of ways by teachers including close reading, direct instruction, independent practice, homework, or as a sub lesson. This is also well-suited to Homeschooling.

This Guided Reading document provides a description of the worldwide phenomenon known as the Hallyu Wave. This is a quick way to introduce students to the rise of South Korea’s economy through the export of cultural products such as K-pop or K-dramas between 2000 and 2020. The Assessment questions on the second page ask students to identify key concepts and information that they just read. This helps students to strengthen their close reading skills with a topic with which they might have some superficial knowledge. Most students have heard of BTS or other Korean K-pop bands but this text reading gives more historical background as to how South Korean culture has gained global popularity in the past two decades. Most students learn about the Korean War in their World History or US History classes but rarely about anything else relating to Korea. This supplements their understanding of South Korea with a look at a significant post-war development.

This resource includes:

1. An informative 404-word passage entitled “What is the Hallyu Wave?” The text describes the development of South Korean culture between the years 2000 and 2020.

2. An Assessment with 9 questions. These involve determining key facts, ideas and vocabulary from the passage and interpreting text. The questions align with Common Core Informational Standards

3. Three Enrichment Activities that can further an in-class period or for students to complete on their own. These activities are suitable for group or individual work.

4. An Answer Key with all answers to the questions.

5. A list of sources for bibliographic reference.

This activity provides a re-usable template that can be adapted to any unit, and in any level of your Spanish classes! This activity is an ALL DONE lesson plan that you mangage and can take as long or as little time as you want it to!

Spark some interest and desire with your students as you ask questions that provoke them to contribute their thoughts and opinions. Generate more discussion by having students play the other side of the coin, or moderate the discussion by asking follow-up questions! Class discussions are so interesting when everyone participates! This no prep activity leads students on an exploration of the modern history between Russia and Ukraine. Topics covered include country information, biographical information on the Presidents, NATO, the Maidan Revolution, the annexation of Crimea, events in the Donbas region, and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia on February 24, 2022.
