**Social cues **—both verbal and nonverbal— and body language are everywhere we look—often communicating more than words ever could. A raised eyebrow, crossed arms, a quick glance, or even silence can completely change the meaning of what’s being said. Sometimes, people need to “read between the lines” to fully understand the message. For students, the ability to recognize and correctly interpret both spoken and unspoken signals is an essential life skill. It helps them respond appropriately in conversations, build stronger relationships, and avoid misunderstandings.

This resource was designed to help middle and high school students strengthen their social awareness by identifying, interpreting, and responding to both verbal and nonverbal social cues in real-world situations. Whether it’s noticing sarcasm, decoding body language, or navigating subtle emotional signals in conversations or texts, these activities teach students to look beyond the words and understand the why behind them.

Students are also learning how to read between the lines, pick up on implied meaning, and understand the intent behind words, tone, and reactions.

With each worksheet, students build emotional intelligence, communication skills, and relationship awareness—tools that support not only social-emotional growth but also classroom success and conflict resolution.

Key Themes Students Will Explore in These Social Cues Activities:

▶ Reading Between the Lines
(Interpreting subtle messages that aren’t directly stated)
▶ Tone and Meaning
(How tone changes the meaning of a sentence in conversation or text)
▶ Recognizing Sarcasm and Passive Aggression
(Spotting when someone says one thing but means another)
▶ Identifying Emotional Clues
(Frustration, jealousy, discomfort, and more—without saying it outright)
▶ Cultural Awareness and Differences
(How people from different backgrounds use and interpret social cues)
▶ Text Message Interpretation
(Picking up on emotional tone and intent through written messages)
▶ Self-Expression and Misunderstanding
(How students communicate their own feelings—and what they want others to understand)
▶ Responding with Empathy
(Using social awareness to build trust and avoid conflict)
▶ Building Stronger Relationships
(Recognizing the power of nonverbal communication in friendships and group dynamics)

Covers topics such as:

**▶️ **Social cues and nonverbal communication
**▶️ **Body language and facial expressions
**▶️ **Tone of voice and emotional meaning
**▶️ **Eye contact and personal space
**▶️ **Recognizing sarcasm and mixed signals
**▶️ **Reading between the lines in conversation

This set makes it easy to introduce, teach, and reinforce the expectations that make group work run smoothly. With ready-to-use activities, posters, and self-assessments, students get a clear picture of what good collaboration looks like and plenty of chances to practice it in real classroom situations.

This resource highlights 6 specific collaboration norms that help students stay focused, respectful, and accountable during group work.

This resource comes in both print and digital formats for maximum flexibility and includes everything you need to teach, model, and practice collaboration.

What’s Included

★** 1 Groupwork & Collaboration Norms Anticipation Guide (2 variations) – **Students respond to thought-provoking statements to spark discussion and reflection before diving into group work. This activity gives teachers a clear sense of where students are at with their thinking about collaboration and also lets students hear and consider one another’s perspectives on how group work can run smoothly.

★ **1 Collaboration & Groupwork Self-Assessment – **Includes a student-friendly scoring guide at the bottom to help students reflect on their own teamwork habits. This tool encourages students to think about the kind of group member and team player they are, identify their strengths and weaknesses, and set realistic goals for improvement. By assessing their own collaboration skills, students gain more awareness of how they contribute to group success and where they can grow.

**★ 3 Collaboration & Groupwork Norms Posters (Color | BW | Print & Digital) – **Display in your classroom as daily reminders of the expectations for positive group work.

**★ 7 Collaboration & Groupwork Norms Activity Worksheets (with Answer Keys) **– Print and digital worksheets that guide students through sorting, reflecting, and applying group norms. These activities help students understand what groupwork norms are, practice using them, and think through common challenges and solutions. They give students a chance to absorb the expectations before actually working in groups, so they’re better prepared to collaborate successfully.

**★ 8 Collaboration & Groupwork Norms Bookmarks (Color & BW) – **Handy reference tools that students can keep in binders, folders, or on their desks as a quick reminder of collaboration expectations. There is a bookmark for each of the 6 individual norms, plus 2 versions that feature all 6 norms together. Both color and black-and-white options are included to make printing easy and flexible.

**★ 2 Groupwork Norms Rubrics – **Included in two variations to fit different classroom needs. One version is the rubric by itself for quick scoring, and the other adds a feedback and comments section at the bottom so teachers can give students specific notes on how they’re doing with group norms during group activities.

**★ Detailed Sample Responses – **Provide teachers with ready-to-go examples for modeling and support.
