Stress Management SEL Presentation + Worksheet
By Erin Cusumano
This lesson emphasizes identifying stress as a process that takes place in the brain and body, identifying when stress can be helpful (eustress), when stress becomes overwhelming (distress), and emphasizes the use of coping skills to mitigate the negative effects of stress.
I find older kids often know their preferred copings skills and have often already spent time with their helping adults exploring/practicing them. So, this lesson does NOT teach specific coping skills. Instead, it explains what is going on in the brain and body when stress is felt, how stress is natural and normal, and why use of coping skills is important to capitalize on stress when we need it. Teaching about stress as normal, and even positive, offers a validating and empowering approach to encouraging the use of positive coping skills.
The slides and worksheet are simple to increase comprehension and suit middle through high school students.
This lesson includes presentation notes (discussion points and questions slide-by-slide included) (2 pages), slides to present (8 slides) , and a worksheet (1 page).

80 SCENARIO TASK CARDS
❤ SET 1 - 40 Scenario Worksheets and Task Cards (Color and B&W)
YOU experience the Embarrassing Moment Scenarios.
The embarrassing moments/situations happen to YOU. After reading the scenario, students must think about how they would respond in these embarrassing situations. What would they say or do to recover?
❤ SET 2 - 40 Scenario Worksheets and Task Cards (Color and B&W)
SOMEONE ELSE experiences the Embarrassing Moment Scenarios (and your response or reaction to it). The embarrassing moments/situations happen to OTHERS. These Task Cards include the same situations in Set 1, but modified so that another person is facing the embarrassing moment/situation. After reading the scenario, students must think about how they would respond to the people facing these embarrassing situations. What would they do or say to them or for them to help them recover? This is an excellent opportunity for students to practice EMPATHY!
The scenarios come in both Task Card and Worksheet form (for more extended written responses).
❤ Also included is a complete LIST OF SCENARIOS to allow easier access for teachers to read and select scenarios to work with. These are the same scenarios listed in the Task Cards and Worksheets!
*******************************
There’s no escaping embarrassing moments! They’re inevitable. Embarrassing moments are too common and are a given part of existence. They happen to me ALL THE TIME (please don't get me started!), will happen to you, and everyone else, especially young teens and adolescence. Although embarrassing things that happen to you are funny to others, it can induce shameful feelings, cause your pulse to race, make you turn red, and go as far as lowering your self-esteem.
✅ This resource provides students opportunities to share personal experiences and discuss strategies that can be used to recover from these embarrassing moments, turn embarrassing moments around to their advantage, and even make them new learning experiences!
✅ These scenarios, from two different perspectives, can be used to develop all kinds of social and life skills! Students can participate in role-plays and learn how to react quickly to these seemingly unpleasant situations. They can practice turning these embarrassing moments into opportunities for learning how to respond positively and appropriately, have empathy, practice social skills, and develop strengths they need to overcome and recover from embarrassing situations.
✅ This resource includes 40 HIGHLY RELEVANT embarrassing moment scenarios from TWO perspectives (totaling 80 scenarios) that students have surely experienced at some point in their lives, if not ALL THE TIME! EACH set of Task Cards comes in Color and B&W.
✅ This resource includes both print and digital versions (with text boxes already created)! You can assign scenarios to students in person or remotely – either way works!
✅ These Scenario Task Cards can be used as part of a larger lesson, in guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussion before sharing out with the larger group or class, or even one-on-one with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian! Follow up lessons on helping students with their specific social-emotional needs can be given based on how they respond in these situations.
✅ You can print the Task Cards out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate. You may also organize them in a binder ring.

Fight, Flight, Freeze SEL Lesson Using "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros & TEST
By Ms. J's ELA
This social emotional learning lesson uses Sandra Cisneros's short story Eleven. During this SEL lesson, students read the short story, view a YouTube video, and reflect on their own stress responses. There are journal entries and opportunities for small and large group discussions as well.
This resource includes:
- links to all relevant materials
- an engaging Google Slides presentation to follow
- a lesson guide which lays out each step of the lesson along with timing
- a self-graded Google Form test
This resource could easily be used by a substitute.
This lesson has always been a favorite of my middle school students. The topic is enlightening for kids who have felt stress responses without understanding what is really happening in their brains and bodies (pretty much all kids). Eleven is a fantastic story to use when learning about stress response because readers are often frustrated by the way the main character responds to the stressor she faces. This is a great way to integrate SEL into an English class.
