Many students grapple with effective communication, often because they feel more at ease with texting and technology than engaging in face-to-face conversations. Additionally, a lack of adult role models demonstrating good listening and fostering productive discussions, speech or communication disorders, and a lack of formal instruction in effective communication may contribute to these challenges. Equipping young individuals with effective communication skills is crucial for fostering healthy relationships, peaceful conflict resolution, academic success, and future employment. This resource offers diverse opportunities for imparting these essential skills to your students!

This resource presents 40 real-life scenarios, offering students many opportunities to hone their communication skills in challenging situations, even when experiencing emotions like anger, hurt, betrayal, or insecurity. Through these scenarios, students can engage in discussions, gain insights, and participate in role-playing exercises that explore diverse and effective approaches to expressing thoughts and emotions in a respectful and mature manner, fostering problem-solving skills. This tool serves as an excellent platform for students to refine their ability to "filter their thoughts" effectively.

▶️ 40 Scenario Task Cards (COLORED and B&W)

✅ Each Task Card includes one scenario followed by a question unique to the scenario/situation.

✅ These Scenario Task Cards are versatile and can be incorporated into various teaching contexts, such as larger lessons, guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussions before presenting to the entire group, or even in one-on-one sessions with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian. Each of the four Task Card variations features the same set of scenarios.

✅ You can print the Task Cards out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate. You may also organize them in a binder ring.

How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

• Role-Playing: Students have the opportunity to work together in pairs or groups, engaging in role-playing exercises to enact a range of scenarios and showcase appropriate responses. These activities serve as practical demonstrations of how to navigate challenging situations with effective communication. Through role-playing, students can enhance their skills in handling scenarios that require thoughtful filtering of their thoughts, responding maturely, and communicating effectively. Ultimately, this activity fosters improvement in confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.
• Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.
• Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.
• Writing Response: Students can read a given scenario and articulate their responses in writing. Afterwards, they can exchange papers with a partner who will review their responses and assess whether they agree or disagree with the approaches taken in these real-life situations. The evaluation may focus on the appropriateness of problem-solving approaches, particularly when emotions like anger are involved. Additionally, partners can suggest alternative solutions and provide recommendations on effective communication strategies for navigating through challenging situations.
• Discussion: Students can engage in group or whole-class discussions about the Scenario Task Cards. Topics of discussion may include questions such as, "How can you express your feelings without causing harm to the listener's feelings?" or "In what ways can you communicate your thoughts maturely?" and "How do you effectively filter your thoughts?" These discussions provide a platform for exploring various communication strategies and promoting thoughtful reflection on expressing emotions and thoughts in a respectful and mature manner.

How to Play Connect the Dots

• Print, cut, and laminate the 200 cards provided.

• Put the word cards into box or non-see through bag.

• A player picks two cards and then must immediately begin telling a story connecting both words together convincingly. The story should only be 1-2 minutes, complicated, or true!

• Once your class is comfortable with connecting two words, add to your word collection and increase the number of cards selected to three or even four.

Skills

• Moving from one idea to another smoothly, in a way that can be readily understood and followed by your audience, is a must-have public speaking skill.

• Connect the Dots gives people the opportunity to practice. Finding a way to conenct the words and practicing the ability to make those connections will become stronger and stronger.

Do your Spanish students need some help with interpersonal speaking?  Are they struggling to have conversations in Spanish?  Let’s give them some guided support with these partner conversations that will help them along!  Both students will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions as part of a conversation, but with a lot of scaffolding to build confidence.

There are 32 guided conversations (8 different themes) in this bundle, so both students will have a chance to ask and answer questions in a conversational way.  Many are differentiated between Novice and Intermediate Level Speakers.

You can use these conversations over and over again! Use them with the unit students are studying now, and use them as review for students who are in upper levels of Spanish! This resource should be used with Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Tell-Tale Heart. With this activity, students will read the M'Naghten rule of 1843 and decide whether or not they believe the main character of The Tell-Tale Heart would be found legally sane or insane. This resource includes space for students to collect textual evidence to support their answer, space for students to write other open-ended questions for discussion, and a discussion grading rubric.

I used this activity with my 8th grade students, and they absolutely loved it. They found great evidence to back up their explanations, and gained a deeper understanding of the short story and the M'Naghten rule. We used this resource in a socratic seminar formatted discussion, and they had enough to say about the main character and the M'Naghten rule that the majority of our 55 minute class period was covered.

Introducing how to organize a speech when writing a speech has never been easier! This lesson guides students through a step-by-step process of understanding how to organize the information in a speech and prepare accordingly. When a high school student begins a public speaking unit, it is quite often the first time he or she has been required to speak in public, other than the basic Show and Tell in elementary school.

Therefore, it is important to make sure the students become familiar with the basics of how to stand, speak, move, and make eye contact during any type of public speaking situation. This lesson is designed to help the students with all aspects of organizing their speech, so they can prepare their presentation accordingly.

The slide show, and worksheets allow students to practice and develop their public speaking skills. The worksheets reinforce guided note-taking techniques when used in conjunction with the slide show. The detailed lesson plans make implementing public speaking, speech and debate curriculum easy for teachers.
