▶️ 12 Editable Classroom Talk / Discussion Trackers (Data Collection)

Two of the Accountable Data Trackers are "student trackers" and titled “My Discussion Tracker” where students can keep track of their own participation during classroom talk. These trackers enable you to keep track of who's making:
✅ Some trackers also provides you opportunities to jot down important key points that students have shared during discussion as well as some interventions needed to help them engage better in classroom talk.
✅ All this information can be tracked in these Classroom Talk / Accountable Talk Discussion Trackers. The data captured in these trackers can greatly help you provide the necessary interventions needed to support students in rigorous classroom talk. ▶️ 70 Rectangular Accountable Talk Stem Strips (5 strips for each of the 14 categories)
There are 5 rectangular Accountable Talk Sentence Starter Stem Strips for EACH category. Included are both COLORED and B&W Sentence Strips. These rectangular Accountable Talk Stem Strips provide students with access to five different option speech starters for each category.
How You Can Use the Stem Strips
✅ One great idea is to provide students with these rectangular stems and have them write their names on the back. During discussion, every time a student introduces/expresses his or her ideas using the sentence starter on the Accountable Talk Rectangular Stem Strip, they hand that stem strip to you. At the end of class, you will be able to see and take note of how many times each student used the stem starter during discussion when presenting ideas. (All you have to do is look at their names in the back). It's an AMAZING way to keep track of who’s using Accountable Talk during discussion and who isn’t, then provide intervention to ensure that students are using them. Students will also see that they are being held accountable for engaging in productive classroom talk using academic language!
✅ You can also display them on your bulletin boards so students can use them as a reference when engaging in productive, respectful talk!
*******************************

▶️ 1 Peer Evaluation Accountable Talk Discussion Rubric / 3 Variations
This resource includes one Peer Evaluation Rubric in three variations - Same content. Editable versions are included, so you can modify in such a way that meets the needs of your students and instructional plans!
The Peer Evaluation Accountable Talk Discussion Rubric is meant for students to use and asses each other during Class Talk. Before beginning a discussion or debate, give each student a Peer Evaluation Rubric with another student’s name on it. (You can decide who will asses who, or you can just randomly write the names on Rubrics). Ask students to “secretly” observe and assess that student’s participation during the class discussion or debate. Students should not know who is assessing who so that evaluations of participation are fair. Throughout the discussion or debate, students will take meaningful notes of their classmates’ performances. At the end of the discussion or debate, give them 5 minutes to score the student whose name is on their Peer Evaluation Rubric. Finally, students can go up to the person they were observing and hand them the rubric. At the very end, the teacher collects the rubrics for review. This has worked so well for me! Students were always “on their toes." Students found it so exciting to be observed by classmates and also observe others.
▶️ 3 Accountable Talk Reflection Sheets (Print and Digital)
Students' reflection of classroom talk helps them identify areas and skills that need both improvement and enrichment. These reflection sheets encourage students to reflect about their experiences during collaborative talk and develop an appreciation for particular skills involved. These reflection sheets are student-friendly making it feasible for students of all levels to think and write about their overall participation in a collaborative learning environment. Reflection sheets contain images, sentence starters, and questions to really help students think about their learning. They are especially student-friendly for SPED and ELL students!

The Diary of Anne Frank Play READING FLUENCY PRACTICE
By Ms. J's ELA
This resource should accompany The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Upper elementary, middle school, and high school students need reading fluency practice too, but we don't always think about it at these stages. This editable resource asks students to practice a passage directly from The Diary of Anne Frank and focus on accuracy, pace, expression, and punctuation. Students are asked to practice reading the passage to an adult. I have always had my students record themselves reading the passage at the end of a week, and I grade them using the same rubric that is on this assignment.

Many students grapple with effective communication, often because they feel more at ease with texting and technology than engaging in face-to-face conversations. The Tell-Tale Heart M'Naghten Rule Discussion Questions and Rubric
By Ms. J's ELA
This resource should be used with Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Tell-Tale Heart. With this activity, students will read the M'Naghten rule of 1843 and decide whether or not they believe the main character of The Tell-Tale Heart would be found legally sane or insane. This resource includes space for students to collect textual evidence to support their answer, space for students to write other open-ended questions for discussion, and a discussion grading rubric.
I used this activity with my 8th grade students, and they absolutely loved it. They found great evidence to back up their explanations, and gained a deeper understanding of the short story and the M'Naghten rule. We used this resource in a socratic seminar formatted discussion, and they had enough to say about the main character and the M'Naghten rule that the majority of our 55 minute class period was covered.

Interpersonal Listening, Speaking and Presentational Writing Activities are all included!
Guided Conversations:
Guided Convos provide a scenario about a familiar topic and an outline for students to use to keep the conversation going. Students work with a partner and choose the role of Person A or Person B. They can trade roles, trade partners, or even do the same exact conversation again! They never turn out the same way! Students report feeling much more confident and able to keep conversations going after practicing a few times!
These conversations have 2 different versions for Novice High students and 2 different versions for Intermediate Low students.
Integrated Listening & Speaking:
ILS activities are done alone. Students will listen to a recording, and be given instructions for how to respond. They might hear: “Tell me about….” Or “Ask me questions about…” . These activities mimic the speaking/listening portion of many popular Seal of Biliteracy Tests.
There is a pre-made student activity that requires no language lab! If you have a language lab or some other kind of recording software, the teacher script will allow you to record the audio for students if you desire.
There are 2 activities in this resource, each with 5 prompts. They are designed so that the first activity is a bit easier and the 2nd one a bit more challenging. Use with different levels or at the beginning and end of a unit!
✍️Scenario Task Cards:
Scenario Task Cards are my go-to for lots of things! I display one at the beginning of every class and ask students to take turns talking about the scenario. But I also use them as a lesson plan for a class activity! I have students change partners and have them tell a story about 5 times in a row, each time with a new scenario and a new partner. Then students switch roles. Listeners become the speakers. Finally, sometimes I print the scenarios and ask students to write about them in class or for homework!

Public Speaking Curriculum, Speech Activities, Debate Unit - Writing a Speech
By Write On with Jamie
*****************************************************************************************
Introducing how to write a speech when preparing for a presentation has never been easier! This lesson guides students through a step-by-step process of determining how to write their speech and what information should be included. When a high school student begins a public speaking unit, it is quite often the first time he or she has been required to speak in public, other than the basic Show and Tell in elementary school.
Therefore, it is important to make sure the students become familiar with the basics of how to stand, speak, move, and make eye contact during any type of public speaking situation. This lesson is designed to help the students with all aspects of writing a speech.
The slide show, and worksheets allow students to practice and develop their public speaking skills. The worksheets reinforce guided note-taking techniques when used in conjunction with the slide show. The detailed lesson plans make implementing public speaking, speech and debate curriculum easy for teachers.
These no-prep lessons are adaptable for in-class instruction, distance learning, or independent student work. The PowerPoints can also be presented as whole class instruction or assigned for students to complete at home.
All materials are available in both Google Drive™ and print formats, ensuring easy access for all students.
