The Tell-Tale Heart M'Naghten Rule Discussion Questions and Rubric

By Ms. J's ELA

This resource should be used with Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Tell-Tale Heart. With this activity, students will read the M'Naghten rule of 1843 and decide whether or not they believe the main character of The Tell-Tale Heart would be found legally sane or insane. This resource includes space for students to collect textual evidence to support their answer, space for students to write other open-ended questions for discussion, and a discussion grading rubric.

I used this activity with my 8th grade students, and they absolutely loved it. They found great evidence to back up their explanations, and gained a deeper understanding of the short story and the M'Naghten rule. We used this resource in a socratic seminar formatted discussion, and they had enough to say about the main character and the M'Naghten rule that the majority of our 55 minute class period was covered.

Many students grapple with effective communication, often because they feel more at ease with texting and technology than engaging in face-to-face conversations. Additionally, a lack of adult role models demonstrating good listening and fostering productive discussions, speech or communication disorders, and a lack of formal instruction in effective communication may contribute to these challenges. Equipping young individuals with effective communication skills is crucial for fostering healthy relationships, peaceful conflict resolution, academic success, and future employment. This resource offers diverse opportunities for imparting these essential skills to your students!

This resource presents 40 real-life scenarios, offering students many opportunities to hone their communication skills in challenging situations, even when experiencing emotions like anger, hurt, betrayal, or insecurity. Through these scenarios, students can engage in discussions, gain insights, and participate in role-playing exercises that explore diverse and effective approaches to expressing thoughts and emotions in a respectful and mature manner, fostering problem-solving skills. ✅ These Scenario Task Cards are versatile and can be incorporated into various teaching contexts, such as larger lessons, guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussions before presenting to the entire group, or even in one-on-one sessions with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian. Each of the four Task Card variations features the same set of scenarios.

✅ You can print the Task Cards out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate. You may also organize them in a binder ring.

How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

  • Role-Playing: Students have the opportunity to work together in pairs or groups, engaging in role-playing exercises to enact a range of scenarios and showcase appropriate responses. These activities serve as practical demonstrations of how to navigate challenging situations with effective communication. Through role-playing, students can enhance their skills in handling scenarios that require thoughtful filtering of their thoughts, responding maturely, and communicating effectively. Ultimately, this activity fosters improvement in confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.
  • Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.
  • Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.
  • Writing Response: Students can read a given scenario and articulate their responses in writing. Afterwards, they can exchange papers with a partner who will review their responses and assess whether they agree or disagree with the approaches taken in these real-life situations. The evaluation may focus on the appropriateness of problem-solving approaches, particularly when emotions like anger are involved. Additionally, partners can suggest alternative solutions and provide recommendations on effective communication strategies for navigating through challenging situations.
  • Discussion: Students can engage in group or whole-class discussions about the Scenario Task Cards. Topics of discussion may include questions such as, "How can you express your feelings without causing harm to the listener's feelings?" or "In what ways can you communicate your thoughts maturely?" and "How do you effectively filter your thoughts?" These discussions provide a platform for exploring various communication strategies and promoting thoughtful reflection on expressing emotions and thoughts in a respectful and mature manner.

▶️ 40 Scenario Worksheets (same scenarios in the Task Cards)

✅ This resource additionally provides 40 Scenario WORKSHEETS with lines, enabling students to express their responses in writing. This resource should accompany The Diary of Anne Frank by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Upper elementary, middle school, and high school students need reading fluency practice too, but we don't always think about it at these stages. This editable resource asks students to practice a passage directly from The Diary of Anne Frank and focus on accuracy, pace, expression, and punctuation. Students are asked to practice reading the passage to an adult. I have always had my students record themselves reading the passage at the end of a week, and I grade them using the same rubric that is on this assignment.

▶️ 70 Rectangular Accountable Talk Stem Strips (5 strips for each of the 14 categories)

There are 5 rectangular Accountable Talk Sentence Starter Stem Strips for EACH category. Included are both COLORED and B&W Sentence Strips. These rectangular Accountable Talk Stem Strips provide students with access to five different option speech starters for each category.

How You Can Use the Stem Strips

✅ One great idea is to provide students with these rectangular stems and have them write their names on the back. During discussion, every time a student introduces/expresses his or her ideas using the sentence starter on the Accountable Talk Rectangular Stem Strip, they hand that stem strip to you. At the end of class, you will be able to see and take note of how many times each student used the stem starter during discussion when presenting ideas. (All you have to do is look at their names in the back). It's an AMAZING way to keep track of who’s using Accountable Talk during discussion and who isn’t, then provide intervention to ensure that students are using them. Students will also see that they are being held accountable for engaging in productive classroom talk using academic language!

✅ You can also display them on your bulletin boards so students can use them as a reference when engaging in productive, respectful talk!

*******************************

▶️ 32 Accountable Talk Speech Bubbles

This resource includes 32 Accountable Talk Speech Bubbles (Rainbow and B&W) that can be posted anywhere in the classroom where students can reference them during discussions. These Speech Bubbles will help students actively engage in meaningful, respectful discussion with their peers. These will provide them with varied opportunities to practice, apply, and build "new" language proficiency.

These Discussion Note-Catcher Worksheets (Print and Digital) can increase students' interests and engagement during class discussions, debates, classroom talk, group talk, etc.! You can help maintain students' interests and focus by holding them accountable for actively listening and recording important discussion information . . . to later share during discussion. As students both discuss and record their ideas and answers, and listen and record others' ideas and answers, they can get different perspectives on a topic, organize their thinking, and feel more confident in contributing to their discussions.

These Discussion Note-Catcher Worksheets come in two variations:

✅ 21 Discussion Worksheets WITH Graphics

✅ 21 Discussion Worksheets WITHOUT Graphics

✅ BOTH Print and Digital

Digital Versions of both variations are included in case you facilitate your classes online/remotely!

▶️ 1 Peer Evaluation Accountable Talk Discussion Rubric / 3 Variations

This resource includes one Peer Evaluation Rubric in three variations - Same content. Editable versions are included, so you can modify in such a way that meets the needs of your students and instructional plans!

The Peer Evaluation Accountable Talk Discussion Rubric is meant for students to use and asses each other during Class Talk. Before beginning a discussion or debate, give each student a Peer Evaluation Rubric with another student’s name on it. (You can decide who will asses who, or you can just randomly write the names on Rubrics). Ask students to “secretly” observe and assess that student’s participation during the class discussion or debate. Students should not know who is assessing who so that evaluations of participation are fair. Throughout the discussion or debate, students will take meaningful notes of their classmates’ performances. At the end of the discussion or debate, give them 5 minutes to score the student whose name is on their Peer Evaluation Rubric. Finally, students can go up to the person they were observing and hand them the rubric. At the very end, the teacher collects the rubrics for review. This has worked so well for me! Students were always “on their toes." Students found it so exciting to be observed by classmates and also observe others.

▶️ 3 Accountable Talk Reflection Sheets (Print and Digital)

Students' reflection of classroom talk helps them identify areas and skills that need both improvement and enrichment. These reflection sheets encourage students to reflect about their experiences during collaborative talk and develop an appreciation for particular skills involved. These reflection sheets are student-friendly making it feasible for students of all levels to think and write about their overall participation in a collaborative learning environment. Reflection sheets contain images, sentence starters, and questions to really help students think about their learning. They are especially student-friendly for SPED and ELL students!

Introducing methods to help students know their audience when preparing for a speech has never been easier! This lesson guides students through a step-by-step process of understanding who their audience will be and how to prepare accordingly. When a high school student begins a public speaking unit, it is quite often the first time he or she has been required to speak in public, other than the basic Show and Tell in elementary school.

Therefore, it is important to make sure the students become familiar with the basics of how to stand, speak, move, and make eye contact during any type of public speaking situation. This lesson is designed to help the students with all aspects of understanding their audience, so they can prepare their presentation accordingly.

The slide show, and worksheets allow students to practice and develop their public speaking skills. The worksheets reinforce guided note-taking techniques when used in conjunction with the slide show. The detailed lesson plans make implementing public speaking, speech and debate curriculum easy for teachers.

These no-prep lessons are adaptable for in-class instruction, distance learning, or independent student work. The PowerPoints can also be presented as whole class instruction or assigned for students to complete at home.

All materials are available in both Google Drive™ and print formats, ensuring easy access for all students.
