Le Copain Parfait - beginning French short story to practice être and adjectives

By Frenchified

Make learning French and practicing the verb être fun with this simple, comprehensible input French lesson plan and story. This lesson plan includes a story with targeted structures that can be repeated to give your students lots of repetitions. Comprehension activities to use after the story will allow you to engage your students and makes sure that your French lesson is truly comprehensible input.

Sophie is a carrot. She's lonely and is looking for the perfect boyfriend. Online dating is the answer, but she's got very particular requirements. Will she be able to find the perfect boyfriend? There are four targeted vocabulary structures that are used multiple times throughout the story. The targeted structures are:

  • je suis - I am

  • tu es - you are

  • il est - he is

  • un copain - a boyfriend

This very simple story is told in two different ways. There is a printable text version, and a PowerPoint/YouTube video version with audio. Tell the story as you watch it (pause if you want to stop and discuss or storyask!), or just watch it for comprehension. The video is just short of 11 minutes long, with French audio and text. With novice low and novice mid learners, you can tell the story as is. For novice high learners, you can add more details or write a parallel story. You could even use this story at higher levels by having students retell the story in the past.

Here’s what you’ll get in this Copain Parfait French Comprehensible Input Lesson:

• Link to the video version of the story with audio

• A PowerPoint version of the story with audio

• A printable pdf version of the story

• Comprehension question worksheet

• A worksheet to practice changing from je/tu/il/elle forms of être and adjectives

• Story retell worksheet

• Answer key

Louvre French Listening Activity For Beginners

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Are you looking for a fun way to combine French listening comprehension with a cultural activity about the Louvre? Your beginner students will be amazed at how much they can understand in this activity, and that will give them a good boost of self esteem!

The first step is to have your students watch the six minute video. In this video, I read a short text from a brochure to the Louvre. I read the text three times, stopping in between each reading to ask three questions (plus a bonus question).

At the end of the video, and when everyone has finished answering the questions, distribute the text, vocabulary list, and questions + answers which are located on the second page and watch the video again. Students can read along with the text on the second viewing.

Includes:

  • 6 minute video
  • List of useful vocabulary
  • Full text in French
  • Three comprehension questions in French
  • One bonus question in French

Use this French listening comprehension lesson when:

  • You want your students to get a boost in self esteem because they can understand
  • You want your students to listen actively to spoken French at a slower pace
  • Your students need bite sized chunks of French listening at this point
  • You want your students to see the person speaking for easier comprehension
  • You want to introduce your students to the Louvre and learn more about it

NOTE: Please excuse my backwards French flag in the background! When I recorded this video I didn't realize that the image would be flipped. Brownie points to students who recognize that it should be bleu, blanc, et rouge!

ESL Reading and Listening Story Lesson The Bad Chef

By Frenchified

Make learning English fun with this simple, comprehensible input English lesson plan and story. This lesson plan includes a story with targeted structures that can be repeated to give your students lots of repetitions. Comprehension activities to use after the story will allow you to engage your students and make sure that your English lesson is truly comprehensible input.

The chef is bad - really bad. He puts too much salt on EVERYTHING. He's sad and customers are angry. But is there a simple solution? There are four targeted vocabulary structures that are used multiple times throughout the story. The targeted structures are:

  • a bad chef
  • he puts
  • too much salt
  • you are

This very simple story is told in two different ways. There is a printable text version, and an animated mp4 version. Tell the story as you watch it (pause if you want to stop and discuss or storyask!), or just watch it for comprehension. The video is just over 5 minutes long, with pause time for students to read the text. There is a second version of the video with only the illustrations - no text - so you can watch it and do story retells. With novice low and novice mid learners, you can tell the story as is. For novice high learners, you can add more details or write a parallel story. You could even use this story at higher levels by having students retell the story in the past.

Here’s what you’ll get in this English Comprehensible Input Lesson:

• Links to the videos both with and without the text

• A printable pdf version of the story

• Comprehension question worksheet

• "Who said it?" worksheet

• Story retell worksheet

• Answer key

French Imperfect Dictée Activity Beginners Listening Comprehension - Imparfait

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Are you looking for a French dictée - dictation exercise using the imperfect tense - l'imparfait for your beginner level students? Do you struggle to find themed dictées that match beginner level French grammar?

Dictées are great activities for building listening comprehension and writing skills. This is a beginner level French dictée about "quand j'étais petit".

Included:

  • Ten sentences
  • Theme - Quand j'étais petit...
  • Basic grammar
  • Imperfect tense - être, habiter, prendre, réviser, travailler, aimer, faire, passer

Included:

➯ Video presentation of the dictée. Watch me and listen as I read each sentence two times slowly enough to understand and write at the same time. Many non-natives find it makes the listening comprehension part of dictation exercises more manageable to see the speaker's mouth. Once I've finished reading the dictation, I will present each written sentence in French along with the English translation. Once we've gone through all of the sentences and students have checked their work, I will present the complete text in paragraph form on the screen. At that time, we can slowly read through the complete text together so they can see how the separate sentences actually form a short story.

➯ Audio presentation of the dictée. Listen as I read each sentence two times slowly enough to understand and write at the same time. This version of the exercise will be more challenging as students will not see the speaker's mouth.

➯ PDF of the numbered sentences in the dictée and the English translation.

➯ Numbered student response sheet. This is located on page 2 of the PDF.

➯ The following dictées are included in Bundled Set 1:

  • Présenter quelqu'un
  • Pays, langue, nationalité
  • Situer un objet
  • Décrire une personne
  • Décrire un lieu d'habitation
  • Dans la rue
  • À l'hôtel
  • Les heures
  • La semaine
  • La routine  - Verbes réfléchis

➯ The following dictées are included in Bundled Set 2:

  • La nourriture
  • Passé composé avec avoir
  • Passé composé avec être
  • Interdictions et devoirs
  • Savoir, pouvoir, vouloir
  • Pronoms directs et indirects
  • L'entretien
  • Avantages et inconvénients
  • Passé composé des verbes réfléchis
  • Parler de son enfance

"Dictation is the transcription of spoken text: one person who is "dictating" speaks and another who is "taking dictation" writes down the words as they are spoken. Among speakers of several languages, dictation is used as a test of language skill, similar to spelling bees in the English-speaking world."
