Children are fascinated by the solar system, so it's no wonder that they enjoy classical music with a space theme! "The Planets" by Gustav Holst is a great example of such a piece and it also represents an important era in classical music history when composers were writing symphonies based on nature and science.
This packet contains a set of listening activities to introduce children to the orchestration and harmony of Gustav Holst's "The Planets!"

Why is "The Planets" important?
"The Planets" is one of the most famous pieces of classical music ever composed. It is a seven-movement orchestral suite composed by Gustav Holst from 1914 to 1916. Holst's composition was inspired by space, and each movement represents a planet in our solar system. Later additions by Leonard Bernstein and Jun Nagao are also included.

Students can select the weather symbols that come to mind. Is the music happy or sad? A set of emotional characters allows your group to pick the feelings that best relate to a piece of music.
Emoji Checkboxes - Students can use the checkboxes to note how they feel and what they imagine while listening to a selected piece of music. Choose from the musical instruments, nature scenes, colors, and more!
Color a Carnival - Which carnival rides and activities would best fit a piece of music? Does the tempo feel like a roller coaster or a peaceful swing ride in the sky? Choose a tasty treat from the snack bar, then stop at the prize booth before finishing. There are no wrong answers!
Listen and Color - There's plenty of space for drawing, coloring, or journaling! Students can decorate the box in their own music-inspired way while choosing from creative keywords that best describe their listening experience.
★ Easel Activity ★ Pair an engaging digital listening board with these musical selections! Students use the highlight tool to choose from keyword lists that describe their listening experience. An answer box at the bottom allows students to write a brief description of their thoughts and feelings. Using the pen or any design tool provided, students can decorate a scene or upload an image to the frame! Each board features colorful clipart related to the music. Looking for a way to have some fun while learning music? Look no further. This Graphic Scores Unit will have your students exploring how to represent sound using graphics and composing in no time! There are 3 main lessons included in this unit, however, the last lesson will likely take 6-8 lessons to put together and perform. This unit is one I have used with my own students so I know how much fun they have with it! The great thing with graphic scores is you don't really need any instruments to compose which makes this unit even better if you're teaching music on a cart or have limited resources available.
Overview:
This graphic score short unit exposes students to what a graphic score is. They get to represent sound using graphics and compose their own graphic score using found sounds. Students will learn how sound and music can be represented using graphics. They will practice representing a short piece of music through graphics. After, they will represent common soundscapes using their own graphics and will then create their own graphic score to perform. I created this in Google Docs/Slides so that you can customize this unit to your own unique needs.
Learning Goals:
- We are learning how to represent sounds and music using non-traditional notation.
- We are learning to compose a piece of music using found sounds and represent our sound using graphics.
Success Criteria:
- I can represent sound using graphics.
- I can compose a piece of music with a group and perform it using my score.

The Throne Room/End Credits, Star Wars (with mp3!) - BUCKET DRUMMING!

A departure from our typical popular music fare, we now offer you "The Throne Room/End Credits" from John Williams' Star Wars franchise covered by famous YouTuber 331ERock!
There are five color coded slides along with the form and instrumental identifiers listed next to each phrase. Discuss form with the students (a great way to talk about the variations of the theme with inclusion or exclusions of certain instrument groupings) and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats. Then, apply it to drums!
All regular notation is to be played on the buckets (or drums, or ground, however you wish), and the X notation (with a down stem) are played as stick clicks above their head (or you could apply it to a tambourine or other auxiliary instrument)
This one is great to work on off beats and extensions of themes. It switches around a lot so it is sure to keep your kids engaged :)

A film music favorite from one of the all-time greatest movies of the 21st century makes its way to BUCKET DRUMMING with an arrangement from the opening title sequence to the movie The Greatest Showman with "The Greatest Show"

Lots of repeated sixteenths and eights in this one, and albeit a slower tempo, it can definitely give your kids a challenge -- but needless to say, if you know a bit about this soundtrack, this will ultimately have your kids engaged!

Redone and remodeled from the beginning to end with more colorful layouts and updated music, the 2014 follow-up to the #1 selling "Identify Form in Pop Music"... here's part TWO!
Kids love their pop music, right? Want to integrate it into your classroom? This is great lesson to do with 4th and 5th graders that lets them listen to their favorite pop music while learning about musical form!
The lesson begins with a video introduction to form and then talks about elements of pop music and how it ascribes to a specific form. We talk about the intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and outro, and include (different from the 2013 version) the collision and the channel and then go onto our activity.
I cut out cards... a whole bunch of intros, verses, chorus, bridges, outros, channels, and collisons (or you can do it with a whiteboard/marker, or even as a unison class response) and give them to each student, then have have the kids sit on the floor. I then play an mp3 of a song which has 10 second clips of each of the sections (there is about a 2 second gap in between each clip and all clips are safe for little ears -- no profanity!) and have the students identify them by spelling them out on the floor in front of them
A great compromise to having your kids listen to their music and still satisfy a 4th and 5th grade standard in identifying the structure of music!

Wanna get your Orff Ensemble moving and grooving but don't know where to start? Get percussive with five original compositions for your Orff Ensemble.
This Orff Ensemble orchestration provides parts for Soprano Glockenspiel, Soprano Xylophone, Alto Xylophone, Bass Xylophone, Percussion, and Boomwhackers with color coded notes. All parts work together and you can perform the arrangement with all or just some of the parts. Xylophone doubles as the Metallophone part if you have Metallophones.
You are free to dissect melodies and harmonies to what you wish, or play right from the beginning tothe end. Most arrangements are around 18-24 measures long. 3 of the pieces are in C major, 2 are in D minor (best wishes to those who have a removable B-flat bar!)

Imperial March, Star Wars - BUCKET DRUMMING!

A departure from our typical popular music fare, we now offer you "The Imperial March" from John Williams' Star Wars franchise!
There are five color coded slides along with the form and instrumental identifiers listed next to each phrase. Discuss form with the students (a great way to talk about the variations of the theme with inclusion or exclusions of certain instrument groupings) and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats (most are repeated 2 times). Then, apply it to drums!
All regular notation is to be played on the buckets (or drums, or ground, however you wish), and the X notation (with a down stem) are played as stick clicks above their head (or you could apply it to a tambourine or other auxiliary instrument)
This one is great to work on 16th note triplets -- work on those alternating hands! :D

The most difficult (and longest!) bucket drumming repertoire has hit Mr. Litt's Music Room in the infamous William Tell Overture by Gioachino Rossini! Super super difficult, super super engaging, but so rewarding if done well! You could even use this as a concert piece

This is a terrific activity to discuss with the kids with the inclusion of classic music, modern drumming, and identifying form. Perhaps use this video as a precursor?
