This is a great back to school activity to get to know your students in music class: Music: Getting To Know You Questionnaire and Your Ideal Music Classroom (Back to School Activity). The questionnaire is a chance for you to get to know your students and their experiences in music. I use this for grade 6-8. The second part of this activity is for students to design their ideal music classroom. Entertain your class while integrating music and language with Music Wordle! This resources includes 46 Music Wordles that you can assign to your students or play together as a class. You could even hold a competition to see who can solve each Worldle first! There is lots of flexibility on how you can use this resource. I created this in Google Sheets. Your Music Wordle Google Sheet will include links to each of the 46 Music Wordle Puzzles. I've included a solutions tab as well as a table that includes puzzle hints, if you choose to share with your students. Each hyperlink is set up for you to make a copy of the Music World Puzzle before you play.

Weather and Emotions Listening Sheets
Weather is a recurring theme in classical music. Does a musical piece remind the listener of a snowy day or a cheerful sunny afternoon? Students can select the weather symbols that come to mind. Is the music happy or sad? A set of emotional characters allows your group to pick the feelings that best relate to a piece of music.
2 Biography Pages - Fact sheet (1 or 2 facts are already provided, a box to paste/draw the composer's portrait, and a birthday box to color in and decorate cupcakes! A duplicate blank page is included for students to do their own research.
Composer Research Sheet - Students can use their favorite reference materials to compile a full page of facts about the composer's home country. Some of the research options include capital, continent, population, food, and more.

A brand new approach to the Rainbow Recorder System, Level 2! I use original and simple compositions for this one which I use this with my 4th and 5th graders. We start off simple and get into more technical things along the way -- scaffolding made simple! This buildings on the previous year's Rainbow Recorder system (which you can download as well in my files). We learn more advanced techniques such as slurs, articulations, more terminology, and great new rhythms. This includes 8 original songs for all of your students and have fingering charts and tips and hints included on every slide! If you're working on meter in your classroom, here's an engaging lesson that'll test your students' math skills! In Sign of the Times, we do a brief introduction of meter (from there on called" Time Signature"). After the introduction, we talk about how measures (musical sentences) are formed and how composers have the freedom to write different beat patterns in music. The lesson in PDF format (also included is the video along with an editable powerpoint file) continues with illustrations of 4 types of time signatures, and gets into the game format -- a measure with combinations of quarter, eighths, whole, and half notes will appear in the staff and students will have to guess the time signature. On the next slide, the answer will appear. I like to do this boys vs. girls -- they have to use their quick thinking to add up the beats! Some are easy to moderate, but as we progress it gets a little harder! If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment... that's the sign of the times!

Working on aural theory with your kids? With "Rhythm Mixup" students shuffle up notecards with quarter notes, 2-beamed eighth notes, half notes, and quarter rests to reflect the musical example being played! We start off the first lesson (level 1) with a brief overview of rhythm from Quaver's Marvelous World of Music, and then head right into rhythm mixup. Students will lay out their notation cards (you can either print these out or have the students draw them on a whiteboard, etc), and then a musical example will be played. Students will have to put the notes in the order that they hear the music example -- hence, the "mixup"! Level 2, goes into quarter rests and the students will have to place it appropriately (hint: it's never at the beginning or end of the phrase!) :) Students identify rhythms upon hearing them and use their aural skills to dictate where each rhythm is placed. Make sure to play these several times, especially for the younger ones so they can check their work! Designed in Powerpoint 2007, all animations and transitions should work on machines that support it. A file is included for instructions on how to install fonts. The following up to the best-selling "Here comes the Boom!", is our new-look, updated format "Here comes the Boom AGAIN!" Each box contains a number of beats and the corresponding boomwhacker tubes that go along with beats (color-coded for your kids to view)! To the teacher’s discretion, students can play quarter notes, half notes, eighth note patterns, or simply create their own rhythms and improvise within the specific beat period. Teachers can also assign rhythms (quarter and eighth note patterns). After the measures are completed, move to the next box (from left to right, up to down) The best part about “Here Comes the Boom AGAIN” is the rocking background tracks! Custom songs the kids can rock out to (with moderate tempi, all under 120bpm), all following the chord progressions map on each song. Mystery Word! - Student Printables

Working on the lines of the treble clef staff? Here's a fun way to have your students use their knowledge and solve a puzzle with Mystery Word! The Mystery Word package includes 50 challenging words and/or phrases that are spelled using the musical letters (A,B,C,D,E,F, and G) of the treble clef staff. Blank letter boxes are below the note on the staff for the students to fill in. Some words and phrases are easy, but some get pretty difficult! Included are three files: The teacher version, a PDF file with 50 pages in PDF format to use as a class activity. The student version, a PDF file you can print out with 25 pages, 2 puzzles to each page you can individual give to students. (If printed out and copied back-to-back, it only runs 13 pages per booklet) The answer key (just in case a substitute teacher needs it) ;) You can use this as a warmup to your lesson, or a lesson in itself -- it makes a great substitute teacher plan as well! Want a better flashcard game to review your musical instruments? Try Instrument Rally Race! In this colorful powerpoint, you can review the instruments of the Brass and Woodwind Family in a great game format. Included are Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, French Horn Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Saxophone, Bassoon It's fairly easy to play. Students are shown an instrument and have to name it as soon as they can! I do boys vs girls in my class and we do this in a "around the world" format, so the winner of the game remains to compete against the next kid in class. Or you can do side 1 vs side 2, north vs south, east vs west -- however you wish! It's great for review to have the students identify all the instruments in the Brass and Woodwind families. Included are a powerpoint file, PDF, and instructions how to install the system fonts that go with the powerpoint. A new form of a Jeopardy, the follow-up from the "Instrument Jeopardy" is NOTATION Jeopardy! An authentic jeopardy game board with categories for Treble Clef Notation Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 on the title slide. Students can elect to pick $200, $400, $600, $800, or $1000 answers. After clicking on the amount, the answer (a clue relating to the word) will appear on the next slide. Level 1 starts out easy with 3 to 4 letter words, but as we progress into Level 4, the words get a little more trickier -- along with the skips and steps between the lines and spaces! Who am I -- Identifying Music Terminology!

Was that Presto or Largo? Staccato or Tenuto? Forte or Piano? Use "Who am I" to reinforce the music terminology you've been working on in your class! After a brief review, 6 musical examples will be played with all examples ascribing to either Presto or Largo, Staccato or Tenuto, and Forte or Piano. Students can do this in a variety of ways: -- On whiteboards and dry erase markers -- Through collaborative grouping or partner activity (using pre-cut cards as an idea -- On a SMARTboard or brightlink -- As a race (maybe boys vs girls, side A vs side B) After the example is played, you can advance the slide in the powerpoint to reveal the answer! A fun way to match up the solfege syllables with the hand signs! In Solfege Mix n Match, each contestant will be given the 7 plastic solfege syllables (included that you can print out and laminate), which are affixed to the board with magnetic tape. In this “boy vs. girl” competition (or team 1 vs team 2), the name of a solfege syllable will appear on the screen and contestants must drag the correct hand sign to their answer box… The first contestant to drag their answer to the answer box wins that round! Keep score, award points, or just play for fun! Included are 80+ slides for your enjoyment. Have fun!

Reviewing ALL notation with your kids? Letter names? Durations? Rests? The follow up to the original "Notation Jeopardy!" is Notation Jeopardy 2.0... (16). Well, happy new year, right? ;) All new categories, all new answers! An authentic jeopardy game board with categories for: Spell it out! (Spelling words with treble clef notation) Add it up! (Adding notation values up to arrive at an answer) Give it a rest! (Questions about rests, rest names, and durations) Duration nation (Identify duration of notes) Students can elect to pick $200, $400, $600, $800, or $1000 answers. After clicking on the amount, the answer will appear on the next slide. A text answer will first be visible, but if you advance the animation, the clue will enter the slide (when applicable). Students (keeping in true Jeopardy! fashion) can answer in the form of a question "What is 2 beats?" "What is a whole rest?" Oh, the kids and this game. Well, might as well learn something? I cut out construction paper squares of the following colors: Purple, Blue, Yellow, Grey, Red, Orange, and Pink A FORTNITE character (or characters) are shown on the screen along with different rhythms in different colored boxes. Which colored box of rhythms goes with the character on the screen? Line up the syllables and find out! I mix it up by putting students into teams of 2 and letting them work through the activity or you can have them play individually by themselves. Or maybe even a race to the board to see which one is right (all you have to do is advance the slide and the answer will appear!) There are 9 different examples of rhythms. The kids will LOVE seeing Fortnite up in your room (and don't worry, this is ALL family friendly, no mentions of violence or weapons in here) :) HAVE FUN!

The ultimate Boys vs Girls competition! If you're working on notes of the treble clef staff, this is a fun way for kids to competitively spell them out. First, we made a boys side (on the left of the screen) and girls side on the (on the right). A word will appear and the students have 10 seconds to spell the word out (there is a timer attached to the powerpoint and it will count down as soon as the slide appears). This games works best on a whiteboard that has magnetic backing as I print out notes and have the kids race as fast as they can to put them on. After the kids lock in their answer, the next slide reveals the notes. For notes that have F's and E's, the answer key has both top line, top space notes -- those F's and E's both count! :) Some are easy (CAB, DAB, DAD), some get a little tricky (BECCA, CABBAGE, DECADE) and so on. Towards the end they repeat, and feel free to edit and make your own! Have fun with this and if you have any questions, let me know!
Meant to Be - Play Along Percussion (Drumming/Bucket Drumming)

Need to connect with your kids with their pop music through general music? Involve them in play along percussion with tubanos, djembes, tambourines, and more with "Meant to Be" by Bebe Rexha and Florida-Georgia Line! There are three all-color coded slides along with the form identifiers listed next to each phrase (and the answer key in the first slide, just in case you wanted to tie this into an Identify Form in Pop Music lesson) :) Discuss form with the students and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats (most are repeated 4, 6, or 8 times). Then, apply it to drums, tambourines, and hand claps! This is an all rote notation powerpoint and most are quarter and two eighth rhythms. There is one two sixteenth-eighth passage in a few of the slides to give the kids a little more challenge at a slow tempo. Your metronome marking for this piece is around 74BPM to the quarter note. Stick it to the Rhythm - Part II!

In Stick it to the Rhythm, we used popsicle sticks to identify quarter and eighth note notation in our classrooms. What happened if we didn't give the kids a blank slate and they had to use eyes, ears, and minds? In this follow-up, "Stick it to the Rhythm Part II", students are instructed to put a number of sticks on the floor (6 to 12 'quarter notes') and will listen to a musical example made up of quarter and eighth notes. They are then to interpret that example and use the last sticks and place them where they think they heard the eighth notes... In essence, they are taking the quarter notes at the end of the phrase and making them into eighth notes by beaming the quarter notes together -- this will really get your kids thinking! There are 10 examples (all with an 8 beat count off to establish tempo) and the examples range from easy to difficult with the mp3 embedding into the file.
