Less than $5 7th Grade Basic Operations Activities (by date, oldest first)

Do your students know how to properly make entries into a spreadsheet to keep track of their deposits and withdrawals? I have created an Excel and Google Sheets spreadsheet to make it easy for them. Each spreadsheet has 3 tabs - 1) showing them what I created, 2) a blank spreadsheets with headings, & 3) a black spreadsheet so they can follow the easy directions I have provided to create their own. What a great way for them to keep track of the money they receive, spend, and be able to balance their checking account!

On the main thumbnail, please download the specific directions to create their own spreadsheet. It is a learning experience in the area of financial literacy + they are gaining Excel and Google Sheets skills.

This is a simple project, but it adds in real life scenario of what the cost is going out to eat. Students end up shocked at the cost of going out to eat! The students pick out a restaurant of their choice (can download the menu offline), "go out to eat" with three other family members, order, determine cost, sales tax and tip for a total of going out to eat for 4 people. This could be a group project with four students going out to eat and seeing what the cost is for each. Either way, it shows their decimal skills with basic math operations and gives them a new appreciation of going out to eat!

Adding with regrouping can be a challenge. Having a way for students to self check their practice is great for error analysis and critical thinking. This Adding Integers Discovery Lesson is great for having your students figure out the rule for adding a positive and negative number together through a series of strategically planned activities! A full lesson plan is included to help you implement this discovery lesson!

Students will start off completing a Do Now and then do a turn and talk about the Do Now with a partner. After that they will complete a Let's Explore section to figure out the connections between adding a positive and negative number and the answer they are getting.
