Faire with Sports - Le jeu des 7 familles - French Card Game

Le jeu des sept familles - This classic card game is fun for students of all ages! Looking for easy prep literacy activities for independent work during differentiated reading instruction? This version of the game is for practicing FAIRE PRESENT TENSE CONJUGATIONS and SPORTS.

Each of the 7 "families of cards" begins with one of the following, and conjugations in the present tense are used in the JE - TU - IL - NOUS - VOUS - ILS forms.

How to play

42 playing cards to print on heavy paper or card stock

This card game is an excellent way to practice and memorize verb conjugations. It will have your students speaking to each other in French the whole time! They will make affirmative and negative statements and will use EST-CE QUE to form simple questions.

One player distributes five cards to each player (2 to 4 per group). The rest of the cards are placed in the "pioche". One player begins the game by asking another player to give him a card. He or she might say, "Est-ce que tu fais du karaté?"

The goal is to come up with complete families. The different verbs represent the families. There are 6 cards to a family (JE - TU - IL - NOUS- VOUS - ILS). Students will find it helpful to group together the cards that have the same picture at the top (flower, flip-flops, etc.) If the player doesn't have it, he says "pioche". If he draws the card that he asked for, he can continue to play and ask someone for another card. Each time a player comes up with all six members of a family, he can make a stack. At the end of the game, the player with the most sets of families wins!

Jeu de Dominos - French Valentine's Day - La Saint Valentin

This is a free set of 32 dominoes with French and English words related to Valentine's Day. This is an easy, very low prep activity that your students will enjoy playing during the month of February. Print out the game on card stock, cut out, and laminate for years of no prep practice and fun for your students. How do you play dominoes?

Match the French word on the end of one card to the English translation on the end of another card. This vocabulary game is a fun way to help with comprehension and memorization. This game is included in both my primary and secondary bundled resources for Valentine's Day.

French Freebie: Activity to get your students speaking

This resource is very similar to another one (also free) in which you'll have students talking about the house, hotel, vacation, etc. of their worst nightmares. Students will talk all about the house, etc. of their dreams in this one. I like to use these resources one after the other while the content is still fresh, but the vocabulary will change dramatically when students shift from what they would love to what would give them nightmares!

This is a no prep, one page activity for intermediate to advanced level students, and the content is perfectly suitable both for primary (French immersion) and secondary curriculums. There are fifteen questions that will have them talking about, for example, the house of their dreams. This is meant to be a paired or small group activity, but it is NOT meant to just have students take turns describing what they would love. The idea is to imagine that everyone in the group is going to live in the house together. There will probably be some things that everyone agrees on, and there will certainly be things they will disagree on. When I have my students do this activity, it's always fun to watch them debate what is and what is not important. In the end, they can agree to disagree! My students really have a good time with this activity, and I love seeing the imagination that they have!

This beefy 125+ page unit on weather and seasons is perfect for your older Core French students who might not have had the luxury of learning this vocabulary and these concepts when they were supposed to. This product (and my other Core French products) are built for exactly that demographic: middle school kids who are too old and "too mature" (so they think!) to be learning these babyish concepts. Le Printemps - French 20 Questions Game for Spring The game of 20 questions is a fun and effective way to practice forming French questions and in these 3 versions of the game, students will practice asking questions about 156 different nouns and adjectives related to SPRING - PRINTEMPS. There is a French - English set and one that is only in French. Click here for an English only version in my English resources store
Included: 3 versions with 56 words each in French and English 3 versions with 56 words each in French Have students work in small groups of 2-4 or project the version of the game that you want to use and do a whole class activity. Each version includes 52 words. Many of the words will likely be new to your students as this game is meant not only to practice asking questions, but also to build and reinforce vocabulary. I like to allow my students to look at the game chart while they play until they’re somewhat familiar with the words written on the chart. One student in the small group or class chooses a word on the chart. Other students ask up to 20 questions trying to guess the secret word. EST-CE QUE……. … tu es une personne? … tu es un animal? … tu es un minéral? … tu es un endroit? … tu es un aliment? … tu es une plante? … tu es un objet? ... etc The student who has chosen the secret word can answer using the following responses: OUI - NON - PARFOIS - RAREMENT - GÉNÉRALEMENT - PEUT-ÊTRE - CELA DÉPEND - PROBABLEMENT Alternative game play: To change up the game and to make it more challenging as well as practicing other skills, have the student who chooses the secret word describe it to others in the group. Instead of asking questions about the secret word, other students listen to the description and guess it.

French 20 questions games - Small group or whole class no prep activities

The game of 20 questions is a fun and effective way to practice forming French questions and in these 5 versions of the game, students will learn over 250 nouns that go beyond what they learn from a textbook chapter theme or every day classroom vocabulary.

5 versions with vocabulary written in French and English

5 versions with vocabulary written in French only

Have students work in small groups of 2-4 or project the version of the game that you want to use and do a whole class activity.

Each version includes 52 words. Many of the words will be new to your students as this game is meant not only to practice forming questions, but also to build vocabulary. I like to allow my students to look at the game chart while they play until they’re somewhat familiar with the words. After they've played the games a few times looking at the French-English version they feel more prepared to move on to the French only version.

One student in the small group or class chooses a word on the chart. Other students ask up to 20 questions trying to guess the secret word.

The student who has chosen the secret word can answer using the following responses: OUI - NON - PARFOIS - RAREMENT - GÉNÉRALEMENT - PEUT-ÊTRE - CELA DÉPEND - PROBABLEMENT

Alternative game play:

To change up the game and to make it more challenging as well as practicing other skills, have the student who chooses the secret word describe it to others in the group. Instead of asking questions about the secret word, other students listen to the description and guess it.

Set 1: 42 playing cards to print on heavy paper or card stock

Set 2: 42 playing cards to print on heavy paper or card stock

This card game is an excellent way to practice and memorize verb conjugations, and it will have your students speaking to each other in French the whole time! In the deck of 42 cards there are 7 families of 6 cards (je - tu - il - nous - vous - ils).

One player distributes five cards to each player (2 to 4 per group). The rest of the cards are placed in the "pioche". One player begins the game by asking another player to give him a card. He might say, "Dans la famille DANSER, est-ce que tu as J'AI DANSÉ?" or "Dans la famille PARLER, est-ce que tu as NOUS N'AVONS PAS PARLÉ?"

The goal is to come up with a complete family. If the player doesn't have it, he says "pioche". If he draws the card that he asked for, he can continue to play and ask someone for another card. Each time a player comes up with all six members of a family, he can make a stack. At the end of the game, the player with the most sets of families wins!

French Dots and Boxes Game - MANGER - PRESENT TENSE - No prep printable

An easy and fun no-prep game that will elicit a lot of exposure and pronunciation for the target vocabulary and grammar when teaching present tense MANGER with and without negation. This is a one-page dots & boxes game including directions. This game could be laminated and used repeatedly with dry-erase markers or played on an iPad with annotation/whiteboard tools.

Objective: Complete more boxes than your component. Each player draws lines using a different color. On your turn, make a horizontal or vertical line from one dot to another. Say the verbs on either side of the line you drew. If you complete a box on your turn, draw an X in the box using your color. Once all of the boxes have been completed, count to see who got the most.
