Your students are stuck in your classroom on Valentine's Day and cannot leave until they solve 5 challenging Language Arts skills-based tasks about the holiday of love!

• Hugs & Homophones: In the first task, students will read 8 fun facts about Valentine's Day and must identify the incorrectly used homophone in each passage. They must write the correct homophone in their student answer booklet. Shaded boxes within the answers reveal their first code.
• Love Talk: In the second task, students will read 8 quotes about love from famous figures and must identify the parts of speech of underlined words within the quotes. When matched correctly, shaded boxes will reveal the second code.
• Shall I Compare Thee: In the third task, students will perform a close reading of Shakespeare's famous Sonnet 18, Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day. Then, they will answer multiple choice questions about the poem. Letters of the correct answers will reveal their third code.
• Fondly Figurative: In the fourth task, students must identify the figurative language devices used in popular love songs. Shaded boxes in the correct answers form the fourth code.
• VDay Trivia: In the final task, students will be quizzed on what they learned throughout the first four tasks and enter their answers to Valentine's Day trivia questions in a fun crossword puzzle. Circled boxes within the puzzle will reveal their final code.

Any teacher of middle or high school students knows that emotions tend to run wild on Valentine's Day, and instead of fighting it, this lesson on Shakespearean language will help you to take advantage of the birds and the bees buzzing around in your classroom!

This full-length lesson plan revolves around Shakespeare's mastery of the English language with an emphasis on his knack for coming up with the most compassionate of compliments and scathing of insults. Through a non-intimidating approach, students will have the opportunity to do a little bit of acting and make connections to modern day as they explore Shakespeare's language of love and hate. I am always astounded by the level of maturity of the discussion that arises from this activity as students discuss what makes a compliment or insult particularly effective and from whom it means the most. This is sure to be a lesson that you will use again and again on February 14th.

Celebrate Valentine's Day in ELA with this engaging powerpoint presentation covering figurative language devices in popular love songs!

This fun and colorful 34-slide presentation is the perfect activity to teach during the season of love. Each slide features lines from popular love songs with figurative language from artists such as Ariana Grande, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, Ed Sheeran, and Justin Bieber. Also included is a student answer sheet (both in color and black and white) for students to identify the figurative language exemplified in each lyric. The lesson run time is approximately 30 minutes but will vary on the age of your students and is a great way to have a little fun on Valentine's Day without sacrificing learning. In this full-length lesson plan, students will closely examine the final lines of Shakespearean characters before their deaths (if you know Shakespeare, there are quite a few!). Following a mini-lesson on the importance of these final words, students will take part in the classic game, Mafia, with a unique, Shakespearean twist. I invented the take on this game several years ago and it has become one of my students' and my favorite days of the whole school year.
