Women's Suffrage: DBQ's and Primary Sources *APUSH* US History * ELA

By Christa Nonnemaker

his 29-page resource with 20 primary sources plus three DBQ prompts gives students a chance to delve deeper into the challenges, obstacles and finally the success of the suffrage movement. The first page includes an Overview, Notes on Primary Sources and Definitions.

Here’s a chance for students to read documents that shed light on various opinions in favor and against suffrage, the differences of opinions within the movement as to strategy and how racial segregation played a role in the movement.

Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest.

Primary sources include letters, photos, reports and other documents. Each page of primary sources includes questions at the end in order for students to analyze perspectives, consider key ideas and identify bias.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source.

Three DBQ prompts are included at the end with instructions on how to create a response to the prompt. An Answer Key to all the questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet.

This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

This is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.

Please check out my other Primary Source Analysis and DBQ Teaching Resources about Women's History

Introduction to William Shakespeare | Handouts and Worksheets on Shakespeare, the Globe Theater, and More | The ULTIMATE Pre-Reading Bundle for ANY Play!

By Rigorous Resources for High School English

Teaching a play by William Shakespeare? Want to provide students with a fascinating overview of the author's life, the construction of the Globe Theater, the language of early-modern English, the rhythm of iambic pentameter, and more? This 50-page EDITABLE resource has EVERYTHING you could possibly want to introduce ANY play by William Shakespeare....

This comprehensive bundle includes a Biography of the Bard, an account of the construction of the Globe Theater, handouts and exercises to help students understand Shakespeare's language, a Shakespearean insult generator, worksheets and quizzes introducing students to iambic pentameter, and more.

Here's what you'll find inside this 50-page resource bundle:

William Shakespeare Biography: This 4-page biography of William Shakespeare explains the conditions of his early life and schooling in Stratford-upon-Avon, how he became involved in the London theater scene, the impact which the death of his son Hamnet had upon his writing career, his gradual transition from comedies to tragedies, and more. Includes a comprehension check with answer key. (5 pages)

The Globe Theater: A 2-page handout on what inspired Shakespeare's acting company to build the Globe Theater. A dispute with the landlord of their old theater motivated Shakespeare's company to meet with lanterns in the middle of the night, disassemble their old playhouse, and transport the timber across the Thames River to the plot of land where they would build the Globe. How did the construction of the Globe infuse new life into Shakespeare's company? How would Shakespeare make reference to the Globe in plays written after its construction in 1599? Includes a comprehension check with answer key. (4 pages)

Shakespeare's Language: A 3-page handout on the crucial topic of Shakespeare's language. Literary scholars have pointed out that "the life of Shakespeare's plays is in the language." What's so special about Shakespeare's language? Did he really invent 1,700 new words? What kinds of words did he invent, and how do they contribute to the meaning of his plays? Includes a comprehension check with answer key. (5 pages)

Renaissance Glossary: This 2-page glossary features 50 words that appear frequently within Shakespeare's plays but are no longer used in modern-day speech: adieu, beseech, ere, fain, naught, prithee, troth, wot, etc. Familiarizing students with this words will make their reading experience much smoother! This glossary includes a definition for each word as well as an example of how it's used in Shakespeare's plays. (2 pages)

Translation Practice: This 2-page worksheet features 20 brief quotations from a diverse range of Shakespeare's plays. Challenge students to translate each quotation into modern English. This exercise gives students a change to demonstrate their understanding of the words in the Renaissance Glossary. Includes answer key. (4 pages)

Decode the Idiom: This 1-page worksheet features 12 quotations that feature idioms which Shakespeare invented: wear my heart on my sleeve, all that glitters is not gold, I have a charmed life, as good luck would have it, and more. Challenge students to identify the idiom by filling in the word missing from the quotation. Then have students explain the meaning of the idiom. Includes answer key. (2 pages)

Blank Verse: A 2-page handout on the when and why Shakespeare employs blank verse (i.e. unrhymed iambic pentameter). This handout explains how blank verse emerged as a popular verse form as well as what distinguished Shakespeare's usage of blank verse. When and why do some of Shakespeare's characters break with the regular rhythms of blank verse? Why might some characters alternate between using verse and prose? (2 pages)

Scansion Practice: Students learn to identify iambic pentameter by scanning 10 well-known quotations from Shakespeare's plays. Includes answer key. (4 pages)

Quizzes on Meter (x2): The 2 quizzes on meter are designed to asses whether students are able to accurately scan Shakespearean lines. Each quiz features 10 quotations from Shakespeare's plays. Includes answer keys. (8 pages)

Shakespearean Insult Generator: Shakespeare's characters are exceptionally creative in their elaboration of insults. Indeed, some scholars have suggested that the insults in Shakespeare's plays amount to their own education in wit. If your students are sufficiently mature, you could use this exercise to invite them to generate their own original Shakespearean insults. (2 pages)

The resource will download as a Zip folder which contains the entire 50-page unit in two separate formats: Word Doc *and* PDF. Because the Word Doc is fully EDITABLE, you'll be able to customize it to match your teaching style and/or the skill levels of your students — year after year! If you don't have Microsoft Word, you'll still be able to access a PDF version of the full unit — which is easy to navigate and quick to print!

If you have questions about ANYTHING related to Shakespeare, please don't hesitate to get in touch! This unit was designed by a Ph.D. in English who has devoted over 20 years to studying Shakespeare — and who currently teaches a course called "Shakespeare's Masterpieces." I LOVE hearing from fellow teachers who share a passion for great literature. Wishing you an amazing experience with the Swan of Avon!

Happy teaching!

What would you rather do? 75 conversation prompts + Powerpoint

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

What would you rather do? 75 conversation prompts + Powerpoint❖

Use this set of I'D RATHER conversation prompt cards to get even your most timid students talking to each other and they are perfect to use as a back to school ice-breaker activity. These 75 question cards are terrific for discussion, journal writing prompts and vocabulary acquisition.

Included:

75 question cards (color and black and white versions as you see in the thumbnails)

Powerpoint version

Ideas of how to use this set of cards

There are many ways you can use this set of 75 speaking cards:

➤ Print, laminate, cut out, punch holes and attach on a ring for small groups to ask and answer questions.

➤ Use as a warm-up speaking activity with a conversation partner. As students enter the classroom have them choose 2-3 cards from a box.

➤ Students who finish their work earlier than others can choose a few of the cards and write out their answers including reasons for their preferences.

➤ Use as exit tickets. Give each student a card before the end of class and as they walk out of the room they tell the teacher their answer.

➤ Stations: Put students into groups and divide the cards amongst them. Have groups rotate to a new station as they finish the cards.

➤ Scoot: Put one card on each desk in the classroom. Give each student a response sheet and set a timer to give them just enough time to answer the question. When the timer rings students move on to the next desk and the next question.

➤ Use the cards with board games. Students must answer a question in order to move.

➤ Use the cards as a getting to know you activity.

➤ Great resource for tutoring sessions.

Alice in Wonderland Pre-Reading Chalk Talk Group Activity-NO PREP ELA Activities

By Perfectly Planned Designs

This Pre-Reading Chalk Talk is a great no-prep activity that you can use to introduce the novel, Alice in Wonderland. This PRINTABLE and DIGITAL lesson is completed in small groups and is more interactive than any Anticipation Guide I’ve ever used! As they complete this Chalk Talk, students will be activating prior knowledge about the deeper issues in the story. You will love this well-organized activity that allows students to collaborate with each other interactively, whether it be at their devices working on the same file, or moving around the room! Printable PDF and Google Drive versions are included, as well as a printable Reflection sheet that will allow them to reflect on the ideas presented.

A Chalk Talk is a way to have a silent discussion about a question. Pre-reading and anticipatory activities are comprehension strategies that are used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic. Completed before reading, this engaging Chalk Talk will stimulate students' interest in a topic and set a purpose for reading.

INCLUDED WITH YOUR PURCHASE:

  • Digital Pre-Reading Chalk Talk
  • Printable Pre-Reading Chalk Talk Questions
  • Student Reflection Sheet

Note: This resource can be completed as a classroom activity on chart paper or online with laptops, Chromebooks, tablets, or any device that supports Google Slides. The included Teacher's Guide includes access to the link that will allow you to make your own copy of the resource for use in Google Classroom/Google Drive.

IDEAS FOR USING THIS RESOURCE:

  • Collaborative Online Pre-Reading Activity: Divide students among six groups and have them rotate through the six pre-reading Chalk Talk questions, reflecting on a different aspect of the text at each station.  They answer the question in their group, then add comments on their classmate's answers in other groups. The best part of this activity is that ALL the students in your classwork SIMULTANEOUSLY on the same file as you supervise!  Only one file to have to open and grade!

  • Collaborative Printed Pre-Reading Activity:  A printable version of the questions is also included so that the Chalk Talk activity can be conducted in the classroom using chart paper. Simply print and cut out the thought-provoking questions and paste them on 6 pieces of chart paper and allow students to travel to each poster in groups and leave answers/comments using post-its and/or markers.
