Fairy Tale Scenarios

This is a 3 part individual/group assignment where groups (of 4-6) are given a problem based on a well known fairy tale where students have to write and perform their solution to the problem. Students will write out a monologue individually and as a group will write the body of the script. After the groups have resolved their problem, each group member will have a chance to reflect on how their character feels after the resolution of the problem. This activity would be appropriate for middle school students. This package will provide your students with hours of entertainment that include opportunities to write and showcase their creativity. For teachers, it provides great opportunities to teach script writing, assess writing samples, dramatic performances, and to foster group cooperation.

This project based learning assignment gives students a fun way to express themselves using both English/Language arts skills along with technology.

This interactive story project is usually one of the lessons my students mention in their end-of-year reflection as one of their favorites. I hope your students enjoy it too!

This rubric looks at 6 different areas when students are being assessed on writing a research report. The areas that are reviewed on the rubric are as follows: research report topic and flow - opening and closing relate with one another, using quotations throughout from any sources used, research materials used relate to topic researched, staying on task, grammar/punctuation/spelling, and working with others. This rubric scores research report writing assignment out of 18 possible points. The rating scale use is a 3, 2, 1, & 0.

This creative writing assignment should accompany Ellen Raskin's book The Westing Game. With this assignment, students will stop reading at the beginning of chapter 24 and finish the story on their own. Directions, writing requirements, a focus on dialogue, and a rubric are all included in this resource. There is a colored version for posting online and a black and white version for printing.

Groups of students (4-6) are responsible for writing an individual monologue, a group script and a final monologue reflection. In the individual monologue, students will get to explore the perspective of their character and how the new dilemma a character is faced with should be solved. The group will then figure out a solution to the dilemma and will write a short script to show their resolution. After the group has resolved the dilemma, each character will have an opportunity to reflect on how their character feels about the outcome. This rubric looks at 5 different areas when students are being assessed on writing a story. The areas that are reviewed on the rubric are as follows: the story outline relates with the graphic organizer, all parts of the story are written in sequential order, staying on task, grammar/punctuation/spelling, and working with others. This rubric scores the story writing assignment out of 15 possible points. The rating scale use is a 3, 2, 1, & 0.

This is a bundle of two resources focused on Ellen Raskin's book The Westing Game. The first resource is a movement-focused comprehension activity in which students are assigned character cards and have to ask each other yes/no questions in order to figure out their classmates' characters. The second resource is a creative writing activity that student can complete right before they finish the book. Students should stop reading at the start of chapter 24 and write their own ending to the book.

This product features an engaging activity that will fit in perfectly with your unit on Edgar Allan Poe or on Halloween!

Students get the chance to create the epitaph for the gravestone of one of the most revered authors in American literature. The activity encourages students to be thoughtful with their knowledge of Poe but also to be creative with their inscriptions. This can be done in or outside of class and also works as a great emergency substitute plan during the month of October. To be festive, I love to give this assignment on the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's actual death day, October 7! No preparation needed!
