Students enjoy telling their own Christmas stories. In this project, they will write and illustrate their stories of Christmas past, present, and yet to come, in a way that is similar to what happens to Scrooge in the novel.

I used this as a cumulative activity after the students had read the novel and before Christmas Break.

Students loved sharing their stories and hearing the hopes their classmates have for their futures.

What Students Will Be Doing:

This is a 3-part assignment that incorporates both individual and group assignments. Groups of students (4-6) are responsible for writing an individual monologue, a group script and a final monologue reflection. Students will take on the role of a character from a well known fairy tale. In the individual monologue, students will get to explore the perspective of their character and how the new dilemma a character is faced with should be solved. The group will then figure out a solution to the dilemma and will write a short script to show their resolution. After the group has resolved the dilemma, each character will have an opportunity to reflect on how their character feels about the outcome. Don't worry I've included some rubrics that you can use for each section too and some worksheets to help guide student thinking.

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. This rubric looks at 7 different areas when students are being assessed on writing a graphic novel. The areas that are reviewed on the rubric are as follows: parts of a graphic novel, graphic novel cover page details, staying on task, grammar/punctuation/spelling, visuals, and special lettering/speech balloons. This rubric scores writing a graphic novel out of 21 possible points. The rating scale use is a 3, 2, 1, & 0.

This is a bundle of two resources focused on Ellen Raskin's book The Westing Game. The first resource is a movement-focused comprehension activity in which students are assigned character cards and have to ask each other yes/no questions in order to figure out their classmates' characters. This is a cross curricular project which combines art, math, narrative writing and geography. Suited for grade 6 to 8. The project includes graphic organizers, a story plot diagram and rubrics for all work. This ties in with the curriculum for each subject area. It is also good for Halloween time or any time.

"A Christmas Carol" Vocabulary: Students will find the given words within the novel "A Christmas Carol" and record the sentence in which the word can be found. I had the students complete these sheets after reading the section of the book.

This packet includes information to share with your students about what an opinion paragraph is, why we complete opinion based writing tasks, what steps to follow when writing the opinion/topic sentence, supporting sentences, and conclusion, how to make our writing flow so that it makes sense to the reader, and tips to look for when rereading and editing. This packet also includes an example showing the process that is used to complete an opinion paragraph. Using this guide, students will write and complete a simple or complex opinion paragraph. An example of a completed graphic organizer, an example of an opinion paragraph, graphic organizer template, and two rough draft /final draft templates are included with this packet as well.
