6th Grade Art History Projects

An Escape Room activity about the period of history known as the Renaissance, where Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and William Shakespeare came to prominence. Ideal for fifth grade or sixth grade, the activity is perfect for group work, starting a new art topic, team-building activities or for a fun, engaging and interactive lesson. The activity can be used in English class as it incorporates some ELA skills, in Art or in Social Studies.

The activity has been split into four different tasks; your students will need to complete each of the tasks to reveal a word. Together the four words make a phrase for them to escape the room.

In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Michelangelo and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 timeline task cards that cover key events of the 1400s before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

In this lesson, students learn more about the history of photography. Students choose a time period in history from a provided list, research that era, and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a video using Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi, Adobe Spark, eMaze, Canva, etc. (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. A full list of software/technology options is listed in the student lesson instructions and includes links to tutorials. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.

This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, career exploration class, Principles of Arts, A/V Technology & Communications class, or any technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

Then, they use that knowledge to create an art project of their own, using Rembrandt’s style, in Microsoft Paint, 3D Paint, or one of these free Web 2.0 tools: SketchPad (https://sketch.io/sketchpad/) or SumoPaint (https://www.sumopaint.com/home/#app) that do not require download. In this lesson, students learn fun facts about Georges Seurat and his art as they complete a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. Then, they use that knowledge to create an art project of their own, using Seurat’s style, in Microsoft Paint, 3D Paint, or one of these free Web 2.0 tools: SketchPad (https://sketch.io/sketchpad/) or SumoPaint (https://www.sumopaint.com/home/#app) that do not require download. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included are tutorial links to assist students with the software for the art project. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary as well.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

A Pablo Picasso Escape Room activity. Ideal for fifth grade or sixth grade, the activity is perfect for group work, starting a new art topic, team-building activities or for a fun, engaging and interactive lesson. The activity can be used in English class as it incorporates some ELA skills, in Art or in Social Studies.

The activity has been split into four different tasks; your students will need to complete each of the tasks to reveal a word. Together the four words make a phrase for them to escape the room.

In Task 1 students will read an informational text about Pablo Picasso and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.

In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.

In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 task cards about famous artists before putting them in order from the earliest born to the most recently born. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.

In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.

Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

In this lesson, students create fashions of their own using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Paint. Students can also use one of these free Web 2.0 tools: SketchPad (https://sketch.io/sketchpad/) or SumoPaint (https://www.sumopaint.com/home/#app) that do not require download. Two versions of the lesson are included: one is a shorter version to create just one fashion and the other is a longer version to create a fashion line (6-8 items) which are combined into a collage. Depending on the class and the amount of time available, the teacher can choose which version is most appropriate. Both versions include a writing and reflection component to the lesson, giving students the opportunity to consider how they made their design choices. Links to tutorials for the programs are also provided to assist students with their creations. A basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop is helpful if those programs are being used. However, beginning students can incorporate tutorials with this lesson to successfully learn the program as they create their designs.

In this lesson, students explore the field of fashion design, using a digital notebook to compile their research and designs. In addition to teacher and student resources, the lesson includes a 22 page, editable digital notebook (Microsoft PowerPoint) which can also be shared via Google Drive and opened in Google Slides. Students can work through the lessons in the notebook at their own pace, or the teacher can assign specific lessons for each class period. Students learn fashion terminology, clothing and fashion industry trends and influences, elements of art and design in fashion, color choices, and the types of fabrics and materials used in fashions. They also create a design portfolio in the notebook, using online resources, of fashions of interest to them, creating their own “fashion line”. Additionally, they explore careers in the field, reflect on their own personal style choices and summarize their learning in the lesson.
