Recurring Decimals as Fractions Follow Me Cards

By LittleStreams

These 30 follow me cards are a great way to revise converting recurring decimals as fractions from simple ones such as 0.999 (recurring) through to more complicated ones such as 0.7125252525 (recurring). Play is similar to dominoes, where the cards are placed end to end with the question to the answers, but each question only has one answer. Students connect the questions and answers together forming a chain, with questions steadily getting harder. Students should be expected to not use a calculator.

Some ideas for how to use follow me cards:

  • Have students race to connect the cards.
  • Have a treasure hunt, around the classroom or outside. Students start with the starter card and record the solutions in the table.
  • Students each take ownership of a card, and then get themselves in line correctly with the answers. If there are more than 30 students, assign some students as ‘managers’. If there are less than 30 students, the first students to connect their cards can be given the remaining cards.
  • Cut each card in half and give the students a matching activity. They can then glue the answers into their books.
For an advanced start, begin on page two of the record sheet (the first card number is given).

Out to Eat Decimal Project

By EduCraft Marketplace

This is a simple project, but it adds in real life scenario of what the cost is going out to eat. Students end up shocked at the cost of going out to eat! The students pick out a restaurant of their choice (can download the menu offline), "go out to eat" with three other family members, order, determine cost, sales tax and tip for a total of going out to eat for 4 people. This could be a group project with four students going out to eat and seeing what the cost is for each. Either way, it shows their decimal skills with basic math operations and gives them a new appreciation of going out to eat!

Decimals | Skills Poster

By LittleStreams

This poster is intended to lay the groundwork for a very basic understanding of how Decimals work, without relying on a comparison to Fractions or Percentages at the very first hurdle. We think that a student should understand the principles of decimals in relation to numbers which are a power of 10, before comparing and contrasting them with Fractions and Percentages. This way, an understanding of fraction conversion can become even stronger later down the line. Download the FREE poster right away, give us a rating, and follow us to stay updated with all forthcoming products! We appreciate your time.
