In We Beat The Street, Sampson, Rameck, and George live in dangerous and underprivileged neighborhoods in Newark, New Jersey. The three boys grow up surrounded by violence, drugs, and gang activity. All three of the authors experience challenges that they must overcome to get an education and be successful.

⭐ For this essay assignment, you can either have students:

• write an essay about one challenge EACH individual faced in the SAME essay and analyze how each individual overcame their challenge. This essay is about all three individuals. Students can dedicate one paragraph to each author. (A differentiated version is included for this option.)

Do your students struggle to grasp the difference between the preterite and imperfect tenses? This verb-sorting activity will give them hands-on practice with this often tricky topic! In this activity, your students will sort the given list of 20 English sentences into two categories: preterite or imperfect. You could easily adapt this activity for other tenses, simply by providing your own list. In addition to the hands-on practice, this resource also includes two worksheet versions of the same sentences.

This is a novel study of Gary Paulsen's Hatchet. In this product, there are completed lesson plans (and a blank one if you need to write your own), a slideshow that includes everything for each chapter (introduction, review of content, copy of the doodle notes, copy of the end of chapter activity/discussion outline, and the closure question), the Doodle Notes outline for each chapter, and the End of Chapter/Discussion activities. This novel study is for 4th-grade to 7th-grade students.

In this novel study, students will practice central idea/supporting details, writing summaries, citing evidence from a text, making inferences, analyzing figures of speech, describing story elements, cause/effect text structure, problem/solution text structure, and multiple opportunities to practice discussions with their classmates.

A large part of this novel study is discussion-based. I have included a slide on the slideshow where you will put your classroom expectations for discussions. There are also times for the introduction to the chapter, you will start with a whole group discussion. (I would maybe recommend turn and talks if you use groups in your classroom)
