Women during the Industrial Revolution: Reading Worksheet * U.S. History * ELA

This three-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides a summary of women's roles and contributions during the Industrial Revolution and Gilded Age in the United States. It covers the time between 1865 and 1900. After the Civil War ended, the economy in the North and Midwest began to expand with the growth of factories and railroads. As a result, immigration increased and distinct social classes developed, creating different experiences for women. These impacts will be addressed in separate resources about women and industrialization.

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

This product was made for students to learn about the 50 states, the spelling of each state, and each state's abbreviation. This product includes slides that are made up of the states that begin with the same letter on each slide, as these states can be confusing. For example: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, and Arkansas as well as their abbreviations so students can see the difference. Slides that show states that don't have any similarities, like Georgia, and states that have two words, like New York, are also addressed.

Each slide is provided with the state name and the abbreviation. Students can attempt to fill in the blanks of the abbreviations that were reviewed on each previous slide as well. This helps students to learn the spelling, abbreviations, and location of each state. This product can be used for students who benefit from having material adapted and it can also be used with students who are on grade level as well.

United States Westward Expansion Scavenger Hunt (No Prep!)

This is a scavenger hunt using task cards that analyzes the United States westward expansion during the Manifest Destiny period and the displacement of the Native Americans during this time which is studied in the 7th grade curriculum under the following standards:

  • 7.6 Driven by political and economic motives, the United States expanded its physical boundaries to the Pacific Ocean between 1800 and 1860. This settlement displaced Native Americans as the frontier was pushed westward.
  • 7.6a Conflict and compromise with foreign nations occurred regarding the physical expansion of the United States during the 19th century. American values and beliefs, such as Manifest Destiny and the need for resources, increased westward expansion and settlement.
  • 7.6b Westward expansion provided opportunities for some groups while harming others.

This resource begins by challenging students with a mission, complete the tasks to solve the mystery word and four digit code to travel westward to California to try to strike it rich in the Gold Rush; failure will result in potentially perishing along the way due to disease, food shortages, conflicts with the Native Americans, etc. Check out the preview to see what each task card entails. Students will need to walk around the room reading the task cards. Each task card has a code word on the bottom which is the answer to the question/fill in the blank. The answer will NOT be found on that same task card. For example, the answer to task card #1 is found by reading the passage on task card #8. Students MUST record which task card they found the answer on in their answer sheet under the “FOUND CARDS #” column. That column will be used at the end for the 4 digit lock code. They will follow the clues to find the correct 4 digit code. Once they have completed the scavenger hunt they will receive a half sheet of paper stating that they have made it to California and struck it rich during the Gold Rush!

This activity would be a great review before assessments, as a center activity, a group activity, etc. Students will be engaged with the learning while having a fun time trying to solve all of the clues!

Protest Movements of the 1960's: E-Chapter Textbook Project

Have your students explore the Protest Movements of the 1960’s by becoming an author of a textbook; whose job is to research, write, and creatively craft a chapter that will both inform and engage its readers regarding a protest movement of this era of time. Using Google Slides, students will be assigned one of the six following protest movements from which to research and create their chapter on:

  • The United Farm Workers (UFW)
  • The Anti-Vietnam War movement
  • The Women’s movement
  • The Gay Rights movement
  • The Environmental movement
  • The American Indian movement (AIM)

Using an inquiry based approach, the accompanied Slide Presentation will first have students explore the cause and effect relationship of how these protest movements came to exist in America during this period of time. The latter portion of the presentation will provide students with an overview of the chapter project with student examples. The final activity will involve students sharing their chapter with their classmates, and completing a Venn Diagram that will serve to critically compare the six different protest movements.

This lesson/project easily lends itself to having a sub take over as well!

Women in Colonial America: DBQs and Primary Sources *APUSH*

This 22 page Primary Source Analysis and DBQ activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into life of colonial women from 1607 to 1763. They will be able to determine what issues were important to women and how they contributed to society.

The first three pages provide background on the Colonial Era, notes on primary sources and Teacher Notes.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY (Historical Context, Audience, Purpose, Point of View and Why Significant).

Primary sources include pamphlet excerpts, photographs and posters. Each page of primary sources includes questions.

There are also two DBQ prompts. DBQ questions are an excellent way for students to identify point of view, consider intended audience and context. DBQ practice helps students prepare for AP and IB exams.

There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet. This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student time will vary. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

There is also an Easel Activity which allows students to answer the questions at the end of each primary source online. For homework purposes, Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is an especially valuable digital option .

Adapted notes are provided along with an independent review after each slide. Students will be required to fill in the blanks using a key, answer short answer questions without a key, complete multiple choice questions, and look at a graph and answer short answer questions.

But...I needed a way to explicitly teach the key skills concept that was engaging and efficient. When I just talked at students, they looked disinterested.

• Two to three views from prominent historians in that field of study.

This 30-slide presentation on the Japanese-American experience in World War II presents a broad and deep look at the nature of the four years between the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the end of World War II and how it impacted the Japanese immigrants (Issei) and their American-born children (Nisei). The slides include information about the Japanese and Japanese-American internment in camps along with the enlistment of both young Nisei men and Nisei women in the military. The slides also include information about those who didn't live in the camps and those who presented legal challenges to internment. The slides use engaging visuals including photographs, letters, documents and art to convey the experiences of an entire group of people who were moved away from their homes and businesses without constitutional redress. These visuals are primary sources that the instructor can use to further student understanding. The slides also include Reflection Questions which the instructor can choose to discuss with students. There are no correct answers to the Reflection Questions but should prompt interesting discussions. This slide presentation is equally valuable for the home-schooled student or for those instructors who want to provide supplemental information to their students. At the end of the presentation, there is a slide that provides annotations on the websites used to access the primary sources which are featured throughout the presentation. I hope that students find this presentation worthwhile and deepens their understanding about an experience that should give everyone pause but also shows the resiliency of both the Issei and Nisei during a very difficult time.

Reading Assignment and Worksheet with Answer Key

There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet.

Civil Rights Movements: Then and Today

Engage your students in having them draw important connections between the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s and contemporary grassroots movements taking place in the United States. This lesson will prompt students to analyze short documentary video clips that focus on six different contemporary grassroots movements:

1) Women’s March

2) Immigration

3) Standing Rock

4) Black Lives Matter

5) Climate Change

6) Teacher Strikes

With the corresponding video clips, students will fill out a provided T-chart that will identify the following aspects of each movement:

1) Desired Outcome/Changes

2) Group(s) involved

3) Strategies

4) Obstacle/Challenges

5) Questions

Hands-on activities: Two relevant, critical thinking activities follow that involve having students take their prior knowledge of the Civil Rights era (1950/60’s) and;

1. Using a Venn diagram, students will compare this time period with current day grassroots movements.

2. Each group will then discuss what issues are relevant and meaningful for them. Students will choose an issue that they wish to see change, and then as a group, will create a poster that promotes their cause.

Time frame for lesson:

  • 3-4 class periods (60 min) *If time is an issue; the teacher can choose from the six contemporary movements that he/she would like for their students to focus on.
