High School U.S. History Lesson

What does the United States Constitution say about electing a U.S. President and Vice President? How were they originally elected and what led to the changes in our system, leading to developing the Electoral College? It is essential that our students, as future voters, understand how our President and Vice President are elected every four years through the Electoral College. Students will explore, analyze, and summarize political parties using various avenues. In addition, they will look at the Electoral Process system and how events in history led to the ratification of the 12th Amendment. The lesson begins with a Road to the White House PowerPoint and Doodle Notes and a discussion, a student cooperative reading activity, a creation of the perfect candidate, and more.

This inquiry based lesson will vicariously draw your students into the lives, circumstances, and struggle for social justice as they engage in the analysis of three primary sources. Specifically, this resource will have students;

• Discuss and analyze the motivations and philosophy of César Chávez
• Understand the problems faced by farmworkers in California's central valley and beyond. 
• Analyze primary sources related to the meaning and context of the Chicano Rights Movement.

The primary sources include;

1. Photograph taken on December 19, 1969 outside of a Safeway supermarket in Seattle, WA (strike and boycott led by Cesar Chavez)
2. Speech given by César Chavez to the Commonwealth Club of California on Sept 9, 1984.
3. Viva La Causa Documentary film- the grape strike and boycott led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta in the 1960s. The film shows how thousands of people from across the nation joined in a struggle for justice for the most exploited people in our country — the workers who put food on our tables.

This is a factual lesson and does not ask students to imagine or place themselves in others' shoes, yet if a child had a family member or experienced the event his/herself, you may not want to subject them to ANY lesson on this topic. This lesson gives a timeline of events and facts about the event.

ALSO NOTE: The closing activity incorporates a song by the Beastie Boys: "Listen, All You New Yorkers" which was written after 9/11 as a Love Letter to New York. (Look it up on Youtube) Depending on your classroom/school culture, you may or may not choose to use this. This is not mandatory for the lesson, but song and music is a good way to engage students. In saying this, the lyrics included in the lesson have been rewritten to take out questionable wording/content. i.e. LSD, Porno, Hell. These words have been replaced with other words. However, the words cannot be taken out of the Youtube video or song. The lyrics can be used without the video or song, but will not be as effective. IMPORTANT: YOU WILL WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG PRIOR TO PURCHASE as this song may not be appropriate for all students/classes/schools. You as the educator are responsible for gaging what is appropriate for your students and are responsible for what is presented to them.

THIS LESSON CAN BE USED WITHOUT THE SONG as it is the closing activity.

This 12-slide lesson covers women's experiences during the Industrial Revolution between 1865 and 1910 primarily. For women in the cities, changes in society were rapid and significant. This product includes slides that are made up of the states that begin with the same letter on each slide, as these states can be confusing. For example: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, and Arkansas as well as their abbreviations so students can see the difference. Slides that show states that don't have any similarities, like Georgia, and states that have two words, like New York, are also addressed.

Each slide is provided with the state name and the abbreviation. Students can attempt to fill in the blanks of the abbreviations that were reviewed on each previous slide as well. • Memorial Day Fun Facts: In the first task, students will read 8 facts about Memorial Day and must identify the parts of speech of underlined words within the passages.

• Not to Keep: In the second task, students will perform a close reading of "Not to Keep" by Robert Frost and answer questions about the poem about a soldier who must return to war.

• Sing it Loud: In the third task, students will read 7 passages from patriotic songs and must identify the incorrectly used homophones in each passage.

• Word Maze: In the fourth task, students must complete a word maze and collect the letters they find along the path. Then they must input the codes from all four tasks into a final sentence and bring to the teacher to complete the activity!

This a great, fun way to introduce and understand the causes and consequences, as well as the differences between immigration, emigration, & migration— Incorporates music and allows interaction through cooperative groups!

Students will enjoy listening to and analyzing a migration song. Incorporating music into the classroom increases understanding and interest in the subject—acts as a motivating factor.
