Students read a non-fiction news article (included in the packet) and connect it to the book We Beat The Street. The lesson focuses on Chapter 3, George's relationship with his third grade teacher, Miss Johnson. Similarly, the news article and video focus on one gang member's positive experience with an influential teacher - like George's teacher, Miss Johnson.

This Figurative Language Short Passage BUNDLE includes every passage set in my shop with 3 close reading and writing worksheets each! ***Answer Keys Included!

Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! These figurative language passage sets are rigorous, use higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Four Corners Figurative Language Activity is a fun whole-group game or review activity. Your students will love moving around the room as you click through the 40 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. In this product, students will learn the English vocabulary word for the different food groups: dairy, grains, meat, fruit, vegetables, and fats/sweets. Students will initially write each vocabulary word in their native language and after learning the English word, students will complete the food vocabulary review where they will be required to fill in the English and their native language food vocabulary word. I tend to use that section as a quiz. I will read the word aloud and the students will then write the English word and the word in their native language. Pictures are included for each vocabulary word to help students make connections to what each item is. Students can do this independently or with help. Students will be required to answer a few comprehension questions that relate with when they eat each category of food and what they prefer to eat.

This resource features a set of 25 reader response journal prompts for use during your unit on The Alchemist by Paolo Coelho. Each bell ringer is comprised of a quote from the novel and a thoughtfully crafted question that encourages students to personally connect with his inspirational words. Prompts can be used as bell-ringers (most popular and mean the first 5 minutes of every class for a month are planned for you!), summarizers, stations, full class or small group discussion questions, for homework, task cards, sub plans, as a filler activity… the possibilities are endless!
