Creating an ABC Book of Asia Geography Lesson Assessment or Activity

By Geography & Math Made Easy

Challenging your students doesn't mean it can't be fun, creative, and group collaboration. This is a Geography Asia research or wrap-up assignment that can be used throughout the study of Asia (or modified to fit another topic) in geography, world history, and other social studies classes. I have used this in my class for 7 years and it has been a very successful learning tool. This can easily be modified the assignment to fit various topics. Students and parents love this assignment because it is fun and reflects what students have learned. Students are proud of their work when they finish. The idea of the lesson can be changed to fit studies within other core subjects, such as science. This is a supplemental activity that will enhance students learning within the unit study. The teacher-ready supplemental activities included in this lesson are focused on an Asia Unit.

Land Biomes of the United States Reading Comprehension Passages

By Science and STEAM Team

This resource contains six non-fiction texts about biomes of the United States. It was made for the NGSS 3-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics.

It covers the following biomes:

desert

grasslands

tropical rainforest

temperate forest

taiga

tundra

The passages were written with third graders in mind, but the information is very interesting and would be useful for upper grades as well. Some passages are shorter than others and have less complex language so that you can easily differentiate for students.

There is a tips sheet for teachers and a recording sheet for students on which they can note where the biome is found, the average annual precipitation, the average temperature, and plants and animals of the biome. Students respond to a question asking if they would like to live and that biome and tell why or why not.

Holiday Toy Trends Mini Research Unit

By Three Little Homeschoolers

Every year there's that ONE holiday toy that captures the hearts of kids and sends parents off to the store to grab the last one. This mini unit covers the history of Christmas toys through four decades (some of which you will remember!). The unit is divided into three parts and relies heavily on student research. The parts can be done at your own pace over the course of a week or over several weeks.

Part One

-Includes two reading passages, one about the history of holiday gift giving and one about the rise of the toy industry.

-Research Project: Students are given four worksheets, one for each of the decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s), and they must research toy trends for each decade

Part Two

-All of part two is in the included PowerPoint. This covers holiday advertising, starting with the early days of ads, through the department store catalog, and into modern television commercials.

-There are three links to toy commercials from the 70s, 80s, and 90s to watch with students

Part Three

-In part three, students will conduct an interview with an older friend or family member about their own holiday toy memories

-Final Project: Students pick one of three final projects to complete. Each project relates back to a different part of the unit.

This unit is geared towards a classroom, but is easily adapted to a homeschooler...in fact, I originally created it for mine! Every research activity is done solo and the PowerPoint can easily be used just for one or a handful of kiddos. This is also easily adaptable, in case you want to change anything for your students, but is no-prep, ready to go, as it is!

Animal Adaptations #2 Informational Reading Comprehension Passages

By Science and STEAM Team

This resource contains six informational reading passages about animal adaptations. There is an engaging animal adaptations worksheet for students to fill out as they read. It was made for the NGSS 3-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics.

It covers the following animals in the following ecosystems:

Jackrabbit - desert

Great White Shark - ocean

Rock Ptarmigan - arctic tundra

Dragonfly - wetlands

Box Turtle - temperate forest

Armadillo - southern regions (this is an extra because I took these great pics)

The passages were written with third graders in mind, but the information is very interesting and complex and would be useful for upper grades as well. Even I learned things while researching the adaptations! There is a tips sheet for teachers and two recording sheets (differentiated) for students on which they can note the adaptations that their given animal has in order to survive in its ecosystem.

☀️What others are saying about our top selling, first Animal Adaptations resource:☀️

"Great resource! I love setting up the cards in different centres and getting my students moving around the classroom as they read about each one."

Time allowance to complete:
5-10 minutes - read through the text individually.
40-50 minutes - answer questions using the text as guidance (including extension activity)

Time allowance to assess:
A class set of activities might take around 15-20 minutes to mark; the teacher can then send the students their marks automatically, which allows them to read back through their work. Nearly all answers are not automatically generated, but only require a small amount of work to assign points. This is because the aim is to get students writing answers and not to just have multiple choice options.

Please ensure when you download this resource into Google Drive that you are logged in to the gmail account where you wish to store the activity. In the past teachers have downloaded resources into their school account in error. Thanks :)
