This activity features an engaging and inclusive escape room in which students tackle 5 Language Arts skills-based puzzles about The Lunar New Year!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Chinese New Year-themed Escape Room. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. All tasks are Language Arts skills-based so that with this intrinsically engaging lesson, learning is not sacrificed. No prior knowledge is necessary to complete the activity; in fact, students will come away from it with a great understanding of China's biggest holiday of the year!

How does it work?

Your students must face their first major challenge of the new year and are stuck in your classroom until they solve 5 challenging Language Arts skills-based tasks about the Chinese New Year.

• Chinese New Year Fun Facts: In the first task, students will read 8 fun facts about how people celebrate the Lunar New Year. In each passage, students must identify the incorrect homophone and correct it.
• The Amazing Zodiac Race: In the second task, students must locate the incorrectly spelled word and correct it.
• Chinese New Year Stats: In the third task, using context cues, students must fill in the blanks in 8 statistics about the Lunar New Year.
• The Tyger: In the fourth task, students will perform a close reading of The Tyger by William Blake. Letters of the multiple choice question answers following the poem reveal their fourth code.
• Word Maze: In the final task, students must complete a word maze. Once students complete the task and bring their complete answer sheets to you, they may escape the room and start the Chinese New Year off on a strong note!

Your students will “visit” four different cities: Sydney, St. Petersburg, London and San Francisco. In order to travel from one city to another, they will have to solve two step equations. Winter break has come to an end and students will soon fill the seats of your classroom. Use this icebreaker activity when your kiddos return in January to engage your learners before diving back into the meat of things!

Students can go around the room and learn a little about their peers time off during the holidays by filing out their 15 question activity sheet by writing their classmate's name next to their corresponding activity. This activity is designed to work on laptops, tablets, or smartphones.

Your students will “visit” four different cities: New York, Paris, Rome and Tokyo.

In order to travel from one city to another, they will have to solve one step equations.

There are 40 one step equations.

After completing each game, they will find a link that will take them to another location.

Since this escape room is online (interactive pages) there is very little prep; just duplicate the student answer sheet, provide the link, and off they go! There are no locks to configure or clues to hide—everything you need is online. No Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams logins are necessary.

Teaching French Nouvel An - New Year vocabulary?  Looking for an engaging way to get your French students to build their communication skills and vocabulary? Taboo is a fun French speaking and listening game where one student has to guess a word based on clues given in French by other students. The catch is that they cannot mention anything that is included in a list of taboo words.

Classic French Taboo Games Bundle - 3 Versions

Object of the game:

One player tries to get his teammate to guess the word at the top of a card. The player must give clues, but he can't use any of the Taboo words in his description. The taboo words are written beneath the underlined word at the top of the card.

Teams score points for each word successfully guessed. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Beginner students should be allowed to use the French TABOO words printed on the cards. This will encourage them to use new vocabulary and will help them in forming sentences to use as clues.

New Year/New Year's Eve Color by CVC Word puzzles covering short a, e, i, o, and u word families. Each color by word puzzle features 4 to 5 CVC words for a vowel family in two difficulty levels for 10 puzzles total. I've included both a picture clue set and a word clue set.
