H-Insertion Visuals - Speech Therapy Initial /H/ - Apraxia - Prevocalic Voicing

By The SLP Curriculum

This resource was created in order to help Speech Language Pathologists target initial phonemes at the word level. This resource includes a total of 40 pictured initial /h/ CV and CVC words to use the h-insertion trick during speech therapy sessions.

The h-insertion trick can be an extremely helpful strategy to use when children are stuck at the isolation level of a sound. By producing /h/ after the initial sound, the child continues their air flow, making it easier to produce the following vowel. This helps them to eliminate the prior habit of producing the incorrect sound.

*Can be paired with all initial sounds!*

If you haven't tried /h/-insertion, download this FREEBIE and see it work it's magic!

Included in this resource:

  • 40 CV + CVC Initial-H Word Task Cards/Visuals
  • 1-page complete wordlist for each initial sound
  • Consonant letter cards for visual cues

H-Insertion can help target the following:

  • Phonological Processes: prevocalic voicing, gliding, backing, fronting, stopping, deaffrication, labialization, denasalization, excessive nasal emissions, initial consonant deletion
  • Motor planning and sound transitions for children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech
  • Sound production for children with Dysarthria or weak articulatory musculature
  • Myofunctional disorders including frontal lisp, lateral lisp, limited lip rounding
  • Articulation disorders to target initial /b/, initial /k/, initial /d/, initial /f/, initial /g/, initial "j", initial /l/, initial /m/, initial /n/, initial /p/, initial /r/, initial /s/, initial /t/, initial /v/, initial /w/, initial "y", initial /z/

Used in Mixed Groups!

Vocabulary: State meaning of words, along with synonyms and antonyms.

Wh- questions: Ask who, what, where, when, why questions about each word.

Sentence production: Elicit full sentences containing each elicited word.

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Click Graphic Novel Comprehension Questions

By Sign with me TOD

The graphic novel, Click! Kayla Miller is great for children ages 8 - 13, as they can relate with the characters. My students enjoyed this book because it is a book about friendship and finding where they belong or where they "click" as they navigate middle school. This book does not have chapters, so comprehension questions were separated by pages. Therefore, written comprehension skills are emphasized while reading.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet.

Answer key is included at the end of the product.

Key Features
Each checklist within this bundle retains the meticulous design with 9 columns per page, ensuring thorough progress tracking and assessment across multiple trials. Available in both full-color and black-and-white versions, these checklists are adaptable to various printing needs and diverse classroom settings.

Focused Goal Setting
Empower teaching objectives by establishing precise IEP goals aligned with each set of 100 Fry sight words. These checklists assist in creating targeted and measurable learning objectives, enhancing sight word recognition in more complex linguistic contexts.

Complementary Practice Tools
Supplementary flashcards accompany each set of 100 Fry sight words within this bundle, providing essential reinforcement and support for consistent and effective practice sessions.

Why This Bundle Matters
By combining the seventh to tenth sets of 100 Fry sight words, this bundle significantly enhances students' reading fluency, amplifies language proficiency, and fosters nuanced reading development. It stands as an indispensable resource for educators committed to guiding students toward advanced sight word mastery and heightened literacy skills.

Advantages of Fry Words over Dolch Words The Fry Sight Words list is organized into 10 groups of 100 words each, covering the most frequently used words in writing. Starting with the initial 300 words in early education significantly boosts reading and comprehension skills. While Fry words aren't strictly tied to specific grades, they're usually introduced in sets of 100 words to support gradual sight word recognition. Here's a general guide for introducing these sets:

  • First 100 Fry Words: Typically introduced in kindergarten and first grade.
  • Second 100 Fry Words: Taught in first or second grade, reinforcing foundational words.
  • Third 100 Fry Words: Added in second or third grade, including more complex words.
  • Fourth 100 Fry Words: Introduced in third or fourth grade, advancing vocabulary.
  • Fifth 100 Fry Words: Presented in fourth or fifth grade, offering more challenging words.

The 6th to 10th sets of 100 Fry words are usually introduced later, depending on the student's mastered words.
