This student-tested lesson plan is designed to explore the rich traditions of Asian art, with a focus on the unique techniques and styles of Thangka scroll paintings.

Thangkas are traditional Tibetan Buddhist paintings depicting deities, scenes, or mandalas on cotton or silk appliqué. Throughout Asia, these exquisite scroll paintings are treasured for their spiritual significance and intricate craftsmanship. In our lesson, we will dive deep into the history and symbolism of Thangka art, highlighting its importance in Asian culture.

Get students involved in the learning process through this lesson China's Historical One Child Policy: Creating a Population Density Cartogram. Students will not only learn about the cause and effect of China's One Child Policy of 1979, but will strengthen their knowledge of map creation and reading skills, specific to a cartogram.

Working in collaborative groups, team members will participate in a group reading activity an article on China’s 1979 One-Child Policy Act entitled Too Many In The Family. This article will address the history behind the law, the policy incentives, disobeying the policy, and expectations of the rule. Students to express their thoughts on the topic after the reading and use high-level thinking skills.

In addition, students will have fun collaborating, examining and learning how to read cartograms by creating their own cartogram that reflects the current population of China. This brings the past into the present. Students will need graph paper, colored pencils, a map, and a calculator for this activity.

While this lesson focuses on the original One-Child Policy Act of 1979, there have been additional child policy acts passed since 1979 — the first one being the 2015 Two-Child Policy Act, following the 2021 Three-Child Policy Act. Students will explore the positives and negatives of solutions to China's environmental issues. One of the important concepts to teach when teaching about Asia is geared toward China's overpopulation problem that began during the communist reign of Mao Zedong in 1949, During Mao's time in office, he encouraged large families to help on the farmland. Mao believed number equaled power. Following his death in 1979, China faced an extreme overpopulation issue and started working toward controlling the population growth. In doing so, the government put in place the One Child Policy Act, limiting families to one child. This posed a problem as throughout history, the Asian culture celebrated male babies as they carry on the family name. **Many babies — often firstborn female infants during Mao's reign —**were kept secret, placed on the side of the road to be found, etc. To protect babies from being discarded, baby hatches (often called drop boxes throughout the rest of the world) were put in place where families could safely hand over their babies without placing them in harm's way. These safe havens for babies have existed for centuries. In 2011, China opened what it calls baby hatches — where desperate parents can leave a newborn. A medical team is supposed to pick up the infant within 10 minutes. This lesson is a great study on how government systems can solve their nation's population problems.

OBJECTIVE:

• Students will understand China’s and Korea’s cultural values and beliefs centered on the dynamic of the family and the importance of men in society.
• Students will explore the rationalization and need of baby drop boxes for children’s welfare.
• Students will determine if baby drop boxes solve children’s welfare issues or create more problems for Chinese and Korean societies.

• Borrow a balance beam scale from another teacher. Science teachers will usually have these.

I have used this in my class for 7 years and it has been a very successful learning tool. This can easily be modified the assignment to fit various topics. Students and parents love this assignment because it is fun and reflects what students have learned. Students are proud of their work when they finish. The idea of the lesson can be changed to fit studies within other core subjects, such as science. This is a supplemental activity that will enhance students learning within the unit study.
