Engaging activities for literature:

"A Christmas Carol" Vocabulary: Students will find the given words within the novel "A Christmas Carol" and record the sentence in which the word can be found. I had the students complete these sheets after reading the section of the book.

Creative activity: Students participate in an activity where they will write and illustrate their stories of Christmas past, present, and yet to come, in a way that is similar to what happens to Scrooge in the novel.

Students loved sharing their stories and hearing the hopes their classmates have for their futures.

As a culminating activity: Students read or watch A Christmas Carol and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, my students read A Christmas Carol and watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas, for an engaging activities before the holiday. They will practice comparing and contrasting in three different ways, including an exciting snowball fight.

The perfect writing assignment for the month of December or any month of the year! This holiday informational/explanatory writing assignment gives students the opportunity to learn about different holidays around the world. Students will be assigned or choose a holiday to research and then write their own informative essay. There are two pages giving different holidays to research, but you can also write your own holidays in if you would like. Students can use the graphic organizer to help organize their ideas before writing their explanatory essay. It includes everything your students will need to conduct thorough research, organize their findings, and craft a well-structured essay.

1. Holiday Pages: There are two different pages of holidays from around the globe. One holiday page focuses primarily on holidays in or around December/Christmas. The other holiday page has holidays the span the whole year. Both pages have empty slots for you to fill in any holiday that you like. You can use one or the other pages; or combine them both to research all the holidays.
2. Research Questions: A sheet of questions to guide students to delve deeper into the historical and cultural significance of the celebrations.
3. Graphic Organizers: Two detailed graphic organizers are provided to help students structure their findings. These organizers encourage students to organize information logically and develop a clear outline for their essays.
4. Essay Writing Paper & Drawing Page: 2 different lined writing paper are included for students to write their essays. A drawing page is included for students to depict their holiday by drawing a favorite tradition or event of their holiday.
5. Partner Venn Diagram Page: An optional activity where students get with a partner and share what they learned about their holiday. They will fill out the Venn diagram comparing their holidays.

Through this lesson, students will catch a glimpse into the life of another child, discovering how the winter holiday season is celebrated within their culture/country—whether it is Christmas, Kwanza, Ramadan, Hanukkah, or other winter holidays. Firstly, a funny Christmas play that revolves around Holly the Elf. After being accidentally taken to the North Pole one Christmas Eve, she stayed until adulthood and grew up thinking she was an elf herself. One day she found out she was a human, and decided to go and visit her biological father. On arrival she wasn’t welcomed by her father but soon the family grew to like Holly, and she also found a boyfriend. But then everything changed when she fell out with her father and she decided to leave. However, as she was walking alone, she heard a crash; when she went to investigate, she noticed it was her good friend, Santa. Her family catch up with her and together they all manage to lift Christmas spirit and power Santa’s sleigh.

Secondly, we have a funny Christmas play that revolves around the town of Bootown, where all the Boos love Christmas. In fact they love Christmas so much it is all they talk about! However, a mysterious outcast lives to the North of the town; this outcast hates Christmas and anything to do with the festive time of year. This outcast is called the Grouch! The play follows the story of Mary-Boo and her family as they open up to the Grouch, and try to show him what Christmas is all about. However, the Grouch has his own plans to ruin Christmas for the town, and steals all the presents on Christmas eve. He has a change of heart however when he hears the town enjoying Christmas even though he had stolen all of the presents. His heart grows and he quickly returns the gifts and takes part in all the festivities.

Thirdly, we have a play script for A Christmas Carol, however it is a modern remake that is based in a school - with the head teacher being Ebenezer Scrooge - you can change the names of the characters to teachers in your school, or to rhyme with teachers in your school as I did (if they have a sense of humour)! There are song recommendations throughout the script, with a mixture of traditional Christmas songs and modern songs. There are 20-22 speaking parts, with additional non-speaking roles too.

There are song recommendations throughout the script, with a mixture of traditional Christmas songs and modern songs. There are 20-22 speaking parts, with additional non-speaking roles too. The play is around 40-50 minutes long.

This great lesson lets students learn the basics of Microsoft Excel (or Google Sheets) as they create pixel art using the program. First, they'll create a quick pixel art from a given example and then they'll create their own! These are also fun lessons to use if you just need something for a one day lesson.

I've used this with 7th and 8th graders who used their free time to create even more art! I hope your students have as much fun as mine did learning Excel or Google Sheets!

Writing a story about a reindeer is fun project for your students to show their creativity. This product includes information to share with your students about what a story is, what is shared in a story, who the audience can be, what is the author's purpose for writing a story, and how the story can be published. This product includes two story ideas, an example of one reindeer story is outlined on a brainstorming template, and a final draft of the reindeer story are included in this product. Templates are included after the example along with a rough draft/final draft template and reminder checklist so students remember to go back and check their work once it is completed.

This may be the most meaningful assignment you give to your students all year.

This product teaches students how to write a letter to a service member who is currently deployed overseas. It describes the importance of writing to our military and gives suggestions for what to say. I use this as an extra credit assignment and hold my students to high standards about the content of their letters. It is incredibly important that genuine thought and effort go into the letters as they are going to real people currently fighting for our country.
