HOW IT WORKS

• Start with the flashcards to practice, practice, practice reading and spelling the words (one, two, three, four, five, etc.).
• Then reinforce the spelling by using the interactive BINGO boards where students need to write the number words under each number before playing BINGO. The practice can be followed by some BINGO fun when you can play round after round as the students see the number words in front of them.

Are you currently teaching PHONICS? Are you working with a small group or providing intervention but not sure where to start? I've got you covered! This Phonics Small Group Routine has everything you need in order to implement small group intervention for ESL/ENL and Special Education.

**This routine uses all four modalities: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing! PLUS_, kinesthetic activities!_

This routine is working really well for my ELLs this year and has also worked for my SWD in previous years. It's simple, concise and covers the basic skills and routines needed in a simplified format. This also includes a list of the first 50 skills I work on in isolation with small groups (ESL/SWD).

The formatting is loosely based on the HMH Into Reading Blend-it Books sequence for grades 1-2 and can be utilized as a supplement. This routine is NOT concrete and can be altered to your liking! This is just what I found works best for me. You can use it as a stepping stone and modify it based on your students' needs and current foundational skills curriculum!

All versions include the “I can” statement, visual examples and the HMH anchor chart for retell. The first page includes boxes for students to illustrate the events in the story, for students who are not writing yet. If students struggle to draw on their own, you can provide them with pictures of the BME of the story to cut and glue into the boxes. The second page includes boxes for students to draw along with primary lines and sentence starters. The next two pages include primary lines with varied support of sentence starters and sequence words. In the second template, each page includes a “Word of the Day” space, along with “My Language” where students can write the word in their native language, Turn & talk with a partner, write the meaning and draw a picture.

This also incorporates PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS & GRAMMAR into each page! For each word, students will identify the number of phonemes, vowels, consonants, digraphs AND whether the word is a Noun, Verb, Adjective or Adverb! WOW!
