"The Napping House" Literacy Integration Lesson Plan

Move and breathe through a childhood classic. The Napping House by Don and Audrey Wood has been a favorite story in my classes for years, and with a librarian’s suggestion, I brought it to life through yoga for the first time in 2012. Now accompanied by our beautiful illustrations, we can use this yoga sequence to promote a lifelong love of learning, reading, and healthy habits.
Each of the characters in the story is paired with a yoga pose, and each page adds another character in order. As the sequence builds, the poses come together in a beautiful flow. Do the poses as you read, or read and then do the poses—whatever feels the best to you.
This lesson plan is a perfect resource for teachers, parents or clinicians who want bring the story to life with movement. We’ve included a story script and a list of poses so children can learn the yoga sequence.

12 Days of Christmas Yoga Cards

Sing and flow through one of our favorite yoga holiday songs!
This activity was one I did when I first started teaching yoga to children. When I noticed how mystified the children were with the holiday season, a colleague of mine suggested pairing a pose with each of the 12 Days of Christmas. You can play the song alone, you can sing the song as you do the poses, or you can practice the poses one at a time and simply enjoy the song afterward.
It’s super fun to try to remember which pose goes with which verse and to have the children attempt to teach it back in order.
If you’re concerned about this material not being secular, use caution. This is best practiced in environments where mentioning and celebrating Christmas is welcomed.

The Sun Salutation sequence is a great way to start the day or any yoga practice! It helps children feel present and stress-free while drawing energy like the heat of the sun. We often use Sun Salutations to create a flow of movement from one pose to the next. Try this as the perfect warm-up for any yoga practice, to get your kids ready for school, or as an after school activity to burn off extra energy.
Our playful Sun Salutation sequence and song are perfect for children ages 4 and older. This Sun Salutation takes the strength and development of children into consideration. This variation of Sun Salutation is safe for children who do not have the core strength required to safely practice planks and low push-ups. Instead, this sequence features safe, child-friendly poses in an order that they can safely transition from one pose to another gracefully.
Sing along with us! Enjoy the lyrics of this sequence as a mnemonic device to remember the sequence for years to come. Try it as call and response when leading children of any age 4 years and up.

As the winter days wind down and the spring weather approaches, many come out of hibernation. The spring season is often a time for children to play outside, participate in outdoor sports, and just enjoy the feeling of being outside in the fresh air. Children in the upper elementary and middle school grades typically take standardized testing, which is mandated by the state. The months of April and May can actually be quite daunting for some students, which is why this spring yoga sequence is such a great addition to children’s routine. Happy Halloween! Children look forward to Halloween to explore the world of all that is scary in a safe way. The Spooky Walk is a call-and-response style seated marching yoga game to get kids in the Halloween spirit. It has been one of the most popular activities of all my years of teaching. I hope you love it!
When we do this song and game, we get to explore the emotion of being afraid in a safe space. You can take the time to explain that it’s all pretend and give kids practice with the vocabulary related Halloween and being afraid. Words such as scary, ghost, escape, safety, and pretend are all good words to practice prior to this activity. If you have very young or extra sensitive kids, please take the time to make sure they feel safe and know this is just pretend prior to starting.
