The project is divided into fourteen sections, including the front pages. Sections include Language/Population, Habitat/Geography, Family Structure, Government, and several others. Each section has a list of criteria and questions that must be answered to complete the section.

I would expect a single student to take about ten weeks, with a weekly goal (perhaps a little faster) of completing one section.

There is a score for each section and teacher info on ways to make it work.

The project contains a cover sheet, a teacher's page, two student pages and a sheet to help students select an appropriate civilization.

There is also a list of civilizations that have an abundance of information available on line.

This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to grade 12. Modifications can be made as needed.

This lesson is easy enough for 5th graders to understand yet works well with students up to 12th graders. Modifications can be made as needed.

A fun and exciting Christmas holiday geography project to engage students in learning about winter holidays and traditions around the world. Implement this activity days prior to Christmas break to keep your students motivated and learning. Make every moment a teaching moment!

Through this lesson, students will catch a glimpse into the life of another child, discovering how the winter holiday season is celebrated within their culture/country—whether it is Christmas, Kwanza, Ramadan, Hanukkah, or other winter holidays. Students will be introduced to various ways of life, from South America to Europe to Africa, and will gain an understanding of each winter tradition and celebration.

Students will Adopt a Friend for the holiday Kwanza/ Ramadan / Hanukkah season and will explore ways of life during the holiday season.

Note: (1) This is a research project. Will need a zip file reader to open the file.

There are may political, economic, and social factors that reshape our world and our maps. In 1989, after the death of pro-reform Chinese Communist Party (CCP) general secretary Hu Yaobang in April 1989, a younger Chinese generation wanted changes in the government and to be heard. In response, the communist government enforced marshall law on the night of 3 June, deploying troops and military tanks to occupy the square in on the crowds of students and young adults who were peacefully protesting calling for greater accountability of the government, constitutional due process, democracy, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech. China's communist government would get control of its citizens. This event has many names and is often referred to as the Tiananmen Square Massacre, the Tiananmen uprising. the June Fourth Incident, or '89 Democracy Movement.

This informative geography and civics lesson will take students on a journey into the events surrounding the Tiananmen Square Massacre and examine what government policies led to the devastating outcomes. Students will understand the similarities and differences in the constitutional and basic rights of those under communism versus democracy. The younger generation fought for more democratic rights while the communist government fought to keep its stronghold on the Chinese citizens.

Challenging your students doesn't mean it can't be fun, creative, and group collaboration. This is a Geography Asia research or wrap-up assignment that can be used throughout the study of Asia (or modified to fit another topic) in geography, world history, and other social studies classes. I have used this in my class for 7 years and it has been a very successful learning tool. This can easily be modified the assignment to fit various topics. This is a quick study on Queen Elizabeth II and how she governed during her 70-year reign. o Students will, as a group, present their findings to the class on each individual assigned character.

o Students will evaluate and determine which 15 characters were the most influential in European history.

MATERIALS:

o Character cards, scissors, and laminate.

o 5 Influential Individuals of Europe Activity Sheet

o Classroom board and painting tape

o Document camera/projector

o Human European Bingo Game

o Bingo pieces.

PREPARATION:

o Laminate and cut out the character cards so they can be used again, from one year to the next. This will also avoid the cards getting torn when placed on the board at the end of the lesson during the presentations.

o Reproduce the 5 Influential Individuals of Europe, one per student.

o On the board create two columns: Highly Influential and the other Influential.

INTRODUCTION: (20 MINUTES)

Play Human European Bingo. Give each student a bingo card. Allow students 10 minutes to move around the room gathering names of people who are somehow related to Europe, present or past from their classmates. Once their sheet is filled with one name per box, the student will return to his/her seat. Begin with the nearest person and allow him or her to name an individual. Anyone in the room who has that name can place a dauber/coin on that square. The game is played until someone calls European Bingo! If time allows, you may play again. This game will get student warmed up and thinking about those individuals who influenced Europe. If students seem, unknowledgeable and unfamiliar with the topic, allow them to access resources—books, Internet, etc.— during the game.

PROCEDURE: (30-40 MINUTES)

Place the character cards in a bag. Pass the bag around the room, allowing each group to choose five cards from the bag. Students will work in groups to find out as much as they can about the influences each individual had/has on Europe. Students will fill in the 5 Influential Individuals of Europe Activity Sheet.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (20 minutes)

Have students present their findings. Set up the document camera/projector. Students will place their character card on the camera/projector so the audience can have a visual of the individual they are talking about.

Students will, within their groups, present their findings. On the board there will be two columns: Highly Influential and Influential. Once students have presented their findings and opinions, they will place the card on the board, using painter’s tape (comes off more easily), under one of the columns; Highly influential or Influential.

ENRICHMENT ACTIVITY: (20 minutes)

The class will work together to determine which names listed under the 15 Most Influential will remain. These are the individuals they will be tested on.

This will allow students to have choices within their studies gives students autonomy of their learning.
