WHY?

Using base 10 blocks is an effective way to support students in developing a conceptual understanding of subtraction. Representing equations with concrete models helps students understand why their answer is reasonable, leading students to develop a deeper knowledge of subtraction than just computing an algorithm.  

The slides are designed for students to simultaneously model subtraction equations with base 10 blocks and the standard algorithm. Building a correlation between the equation and the physical model will help students build a strong foundation for subtraction as they move on to more advanced skills.

Place value is a necessary skills for students to learn, so why not make it fun and engaging! This packet includes several activities and center ideas for students to demonstrate and practice their knowledge of place value! This packet focuses on tens and ones. Activity 1: Place Value Sheets (pp 2-20): Each page focuses on numbers in ascending order (pp 2-10). Starting at 10 and working their way up to 99. Pages include mixed practice as well (pp 11-20). Activity 2: Place Value Cards (pp 2-10, 19): Print these pages on card stock , cut out and laminate. Students can use dry erase markers to fill in the answers on the cards and they can be wiped clean in for repeated use! Activity 3: Place Value Cards with Answer Sheet (pp 21-27): Print the place value cards (pp 22-27) cut out and laminate for durability. Have students draw a card and record the number they have on their answer sheet (p 21). You can also laminate the answer sheet for repeated use. Activity 4: Place Value Least to Greatest (pp 22-27): Print the place value cards (pp 22-27) cut out and laminate for durability. Give students a set amount of cards and have them place the cards in order from least to greatest. Activity 5: Place Value Dice Game (pp 28-36): Print out the dice (pp 29-32) on card stock, cut out and assemble as dice. How to Use: Print out double sided on cardstock and laminate. Have students use a dry-erase marker and tissue to erase.

Players: 2-3

Materials: one ten sided die, a chart for each player

Directions: Each player rolls the die three times to make a 3-digit number. The player to fill in the chart correctly in the fastest amount of time wins.

This resource lets students practice place value, expanded form, word form, and word form.

Ordering Numbers!

Halloween Ordering Numbers Math Station includes 24 themed cards with a a set of 4 numbers 100 and below on each card to put in order. You can decide if you want them to order from greatest to least or from least to greatest, or how about both for early finishers. Cut out cards and hang around the room. Have students take recording sheet on clipboard as they search for each "picture" and record their answer. You get 2 Sets of 12 cards. You can use each set at different times or pool them together for a larger set. Each set has a different colored border and it's own recording sheet. These are great for Math Centers/Stations, Math Around the Room, Math Talk/Number Talk, Scoot, Task Cards, Etc...

This Math Activity can be used many different ways to suit the needs of your class, here are a few ideas:

1. Math Around the Room – cut cards out individually and hang around the room, students take recording sheet on a clipboard around the room and copy problems then fill in the missing parts. (sometimes its great to let the students move about the room)

2. Math Station/Center – cut cards out and place in bucket at a center, students work in a small group at station choosing a card and recording problems and answers (sometimes they work better seated at a station)

3. Math Talk – Teacher shows one card and begins a class discussion about how to solve the problem, having students share strategies and discuss solutions
