This template can be used with ANY book. I chose to use Spookley the Square Pumpkin as an example. Print and go; easy to assemble with minimal help. Pre-cut the pieces for students who need it.

Where is the penguin? This winter sight word game is great for students who are practicing sight word recognition and beginning reading skills. This game can be used in a pocket chart or on a table top for an early education classroom.

What is Included:

• Sight word cards for the Fry 201-300 sight word list.

The cards are available in two formats, 6 to a page and 4 to a page to accommodate different sized pocket charts.

How to Play:

Where's the Penguin is a game for centers or whole group instruction where a penguin is hidden behind a snowball. A poem is chanted where the student(s) must say the sight word they think the penguin is behind. Once guessed, the sight word is removed. If the penguin is behind the snowball, then the penguin must be hidden again to play further. If the penguin is not behind the snowball, then the poem is chanted again with a new sight word.

~ Eve of the Emperor Penguin literature unit can be used with a guided reading group or as a whole class novel study. ~ Questions use higher level thinking skills. Fact sheets are included. Students can research Antarctica and penguins prior to reading the book. ~ I use this unit with one of my guided reading groups. The unit can last from a week to two weeks depending on how often I meet with the group. ~ Eve of the Emperor Penguin is an AR level 3.7 book.

While working with my own reading group I discovered that their isn't much out their for response that can be tailored to ANY fiction book. These 8 graphic organizers are made to work with any fiction book. Great for a book club or an extension group.

Using the books "'Slowly, Slowly, Slowly' said the Sloth" by Eric Carle and "Freeda the Cheetah" by JTK Belle, explore fast vs. slow tempo. Using the song "Slowly, Slowly, Slowly" have the students move like a sloth to the music. Explore various ways a sloth would move. Ask which animals move quickly and introduce "Freeda the Cheetah" and have them run and drop when the chant says to do so. Additional rhyming and tempo worksheets reinforce the tempo and rhyming words. Can be used and adapted for multiple grade levels.

Use this activity to sequence the events in There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Turkey. Each event is pictured on a turkey feather that, when completed, creates an adorable turkey that sequences the story. Print on cardstock to make it more durable or mat it on a large piece of construction paper. Students will color and cut out the turkey feathers and body, glue them together, and have a great "craftivity" that tells what happens in this adorable book.

Where is the penguin? This winter sight word game is great for students who are practicing sight word recognition and beginning reading skills. This game can be used in a pocket chart or on a table top for an early education classroom.

What is Included:

• Sight word cards for the Fry 101-200 sight word list.
• Penguin cards for hiding

The cards are available in two formats, 6 to a page and 4 to a page to accommodate different sized pocket charts.

How to Play:

Where's the Penguin is a game for centers or whole group instruction where a penguin is hidden behind a snowball. A poem is chanted where the student(s) must say the sight word they think the penguin is behind. Once guessed, the sight word is removed. If the penguin is behind the snowball, then the penguin must be hidden again to play further. If the penguin is not behind the snowball, then the poem is chanted again with a new sight word.
