The first several pages present information about the purpose of voting and explain important developments in the history of voting. The middle pages teach students about the Electoral College and the election of a U.S. President, senators, representatives, judges, and local officials. The remaining pages deal with campaigns and require students to create campaign materials and compose a speech in support of a candidate. Last Page presents a crossword puzzle which provides a comprehensive review of election

terms.

After students complete the activities in this product, you may wish to invite community leaders,such as judges, city council members, or election officials to speak to your class. This 24-page document will have your students exploring Canadian politics and the election process by doing a group research project on platforms, creating an infographic on a politician, discovering their own values (and creating their own platform), submitting their own candidacy for class president, as well as making a brochure and poster to support their campaign. Students will experience a mock-election, will complete registration forms, cast their ballot, tally the votes and decide on a winner. Stickers to encourage voting, and a graph to show tallied votes are included! I love pairing this up with my math unit on statistics and data, and we tend to create charts to show the placings. This can also be easily paired up with units on fractions and ratios to show relationships between parts and wholes.

Through readings and activities, students will develop an understanding of political parties, their platforms, party leaders and teams, the campaign trail, voting and polling stations, voter registration and ballot casting, candidacy and marketing - and they'll be involved, hands-on, at all steps of the way.

In this product, students will learn about what happened after America gained its independence from Great Britain, the rules that were developed after the American Revolution - Articles of Confederation, the struggles that Congress had within their own government and what they couldn't solve, how states disagreed and what they disagreed about, John Adams went to Great Britain to set up trade agreements and how it was hard for Great Britain to take America seriously, The Constitutional Convention and where it was held, the Annapolis Convention, delegates - who they were and what they did, and how long they worked to create the United States Constitution, the delegates disagreed with one another, but they did disagree on what should be included in the Constitution, why they disagreed with one another, and how they came to a compromise, Congress - where it is located, who meets in the United States Capitol building - the two houses - the Senate and the House of Representatives - how they were different based on members, length of terms, age for members, organization, and how many per state, the federal government and what they do and what the state government and what they do, the three branches of government - Executive, Judicial, and Legislative Branch - what they do, how they are different, how they work together, and how they each have specific jobs, the system of Checks and Balances that is followed within the government and why, The Bill of Rights that include the first 10 amendments to the Constitution of the United States, brief review of the American Revolution, what George Washington did when he served the United States as President of the United States, and where the first, second, and third capital of the United States was located and why it moved.

The notes are adapted to meet your student's individual learning needs. After reviewing and discussing the notes, they will answer comprehension questions to review what was discussed on previous pages, students will read charts, The Bill of Rights, and the 3 Branches of Government chart, and answer questions based on each of these provided.
