By French Made Fun!

Classroom management in a middle school Core French classroom can be dicey! That's why I engage my students as much as possible to keep em' on their toes! Prof du jour is a part of my everyday routine, where a different student each day is given the opportunity to lead the discussions with their peers and to give them confidence in French. Sit back and watch the magic!

This isn't just a run-of-the-mill calendar! My Prof du jour is at the command desk and interacts with their peers and the Google Slides. Here are some activities that my Grades 4, 5 and 6 students actively use found in this document:

  • Complete Calendar (drag & drop icons) for SEPTEMBER 2024 - JUNE 2025.

  • Weather, time of day, days of the week, and terms like "yesterday," "today," and "tomorrow."

  • Two versions available: One has the Sunday start and another has the Monday start, depending on how you prefer to view your calendar with your students.

  • A Wheel Decide question prompter (which you can edit by removing or adding questions your students are working on).

  • An "I SPY" prompter (a favorite in ALL of my classes).

  • A "GUESS WHO?" prompter.

  • A Franco DJ Music activity (great for explaining why they like/dislike something with sentence starters).

In addition to the calendar: This resource provides 27 fresh and fun ideas that can be easily incorporated into your lessons, designed to give students the opportunity to step into the role of "Prof du jour" and lead their peers in interactive activities.

These activities are perfect for students in Grades 4 to 8 and will foster an engaging, positive classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable practicing their French language skills. Whether you want to boost participation, improve active listening, or simply add some energy to your class, these ideas are versatile and adaptable to different classroom dynamics. With no prep required, they can be used spontaneously to keep students on their toes and excited to take part.

How This Resource Benefits Your Classroom:

  • Student-Led Learning: Gives students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning by stepping into the "Prof du jour" role, building leadership skills and confidence.
  • Encourages Speaking & Participation: Each activity is designed to maximize speaking opportunities, ensuring every student gets a chance to practice conversational French in a supportive environment.
  • Promotes Active Listening: Activities challenge students to listen closely to their peers, reinforcing vocabulary, comprehension, and communication skills.
  • Engaging & Fun: The activities use a mix of movement, music, games, and questions to keep students engaged and motivated to participate.
  • No Prep Required: All activities are spontaneous and flexible, allowing you to use them anytime without prior preparation.
  • Supports a Judgment-Free Environment: By allowing students to lead, the classroom becomes a space where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from one another without pressure.

What’s Included:

In addition to your yearly calendar with interactive daily slides, this resource provides a list of 30 easy-to-implement activities, including:

  • Question & Answer Games (e.g., "Would You Rather?" or "Rapid Fire") that encourage quick thinking and verbal responses in French.
  • Movement-Based Activities (e.g., "Jacques a dit" or "Stand If…") that combine physical activity with language practice, making learning active and engaging.
  • Memory & Listening Challenges (e.g., "True or False" or "What's Missing?") that help students sharpen their listening skills while reinforcing key vocabulary and phrases.
  • Vocabulary Boosters (e.g., "Category Challenge" or "French Word of the Day") that encourage students to think creatively and expand their language knowledge.
  • Visual & Creative Tasks (e.g., "Quick Draw" or "Pictionary") that blend art and language, offering a break from traditional speaking activities while still reinforcing comprehension.

Why Teachers Will Love It:

  • Flexible & Adaptable: Each activity can be adapted to suit your classroom’s needs, whether you're working with beginners or more advanced learners.
  • Encourages Positive Risk-Taking: By giving students the chance to lead, this resource helps them become more comfortable with speaking French in front of their peers, promoting a positive learning environment.
  • Sparks Joy in Learning: These activities add an element of fun to your Core French lessons, breaking up the routine and keeping students engaged and excited to participate.
  • Great for Class Warm-Ups or Wrap-Ups: Use these quick, easy activities at the beginning or end of class to energize your students or reinforce what they’ve learned.
  • Perfect for All Levels: Whether you're teaching a class of beginners or more experienced students, the activities can be adjusted to suit various language proficiencies.

How to Use:

Simply choose an activity, explain it briefly to the "Prof du jour," and let them take the lead. Each activity is designed to be intuitive and easy to facilitate, so even without notice, the student leader can jump into their role confidently. You can rotate the "Prof du jour" daily or weekly, giving every student the opportunity to shine and grow in their speaking abilities.

French 20 questions games - Small group or whole class no prep activities

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

French 20 questions games - Small group or whole class no prep activities

The game of 20 questions is a fun and effective way to practice forming French questions and in these 5 versions of the game, students will learn over 250 nouns that go beyond what they learn from a textbook chapter theme or every day classroom vocabulary.

Included:

5 versions with vocabulary written in French and English

5 versions with vocabulary written in French only

This resource is included in my Ça y est, je parle français! French 1 curriculum bundle!

Have students work in small groups of 2-4 or project the version of the game that you want to use and do a whole class activity.

Each version includes 52 words. Many of the words will be new to your students as this game is meant not only to practice forming questions, but also to build vocabulary. I like to allow my students to look at the game chart while they play until they’re somewhat familiar with the words. After they've played the games a few times looking at the French-English version they feel more prepared to move on to the French only version.

One student in the small group or class chooses a word on the chart. Other students ask up to 20 questions trying to guess the secret word.

EST-CE QUE…….

… tu es une personne?

… tu es un animal?

… tu es un minéral?

… tu es un endroit?

… tu es un aliment?

… tu es une plante?

… tu es un objet?

The student who has chosen the secret word can answer using the following responses: OUI - NON - PARFOIS - RAREMENT - GÉNÉRALEMENT - PEUT-ÊTRE - CELA DÉPEND - PROBABLEMENT

Alternative game play:

To change up the game and to make it more challenging as well as practicing other skills, have the student who chooses the secret word describe it to others in the group. Instead of asking questions about the secret word, other students listen to the description and guess it.

Devine Tête - French forehead guessing vocabulary game

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Devine Tête - French forehead guessing vocabulary game

This forehead guessing game is very simple. It includes 55 cards with pictograms representing an object, an action or an animal. This version is a mishmash of themes. French and English versions of how to play this game are included.

➯ This resource is included in my French 2 curriculum: Ça y est, je parle français!

How to play:

From 2 to 10 players. Make two or more teams, the team with the youngest player starts the game.

Draw a card and without looking at it, show it to other members of your team. If possible, place it on his forehead with an adhesive. The player who draws the card must ask questions in order to guess what is on the card. The other members of the team answer only by "YES", "NO" or "sometimes" or another word that can guide his or her teammates. No gestures or noises are allowed. For example, if the card shows a dog,  the player will have to ask several questions to be able to know what is on his card.

Examples:

"Is it an animal"? Yes

“Does this animal live in water”? No

“Does it eat meat”? Yes

The team scores a point if the word is guessed. The team that reaches 10, 15 or 20 points has won !!
