Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year and Spring Festival, is an annual 15-day Chinese festival that begins with the new moon that occurs between January 21 and February 20. It is an important part of Asian history and is considered the most important celebration for families and includes a week of official public holidays. The history of the Chinese New Year festival can be traced back to about 3,500 years ago.

Have your geography students explore the Chinese zodiac and learn about how the Lunar calendar culturally influences Asia and its people through this fun and thorough lesson. This geography Asia Lesson includes an introduction, a group cooperative interactive reading activity, a carousel activity, and a wrap-up activity.

Students will answer questions that reflect on a field trip that they went on to a pumpkin farm/pumpkin patch. Your students are stuck in your classroom and cannot leave for vacation until they solve 5 challenging Language Arts skills-based tasks about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, and Christmas.

• Diwali Fun Facts: In the first task, students must read fun facts about Diwali, each demonstrating 1 of 6 comma rules. Students must match the fact with the comma rule. The code is revealed when cards are matched correctly.
• Hanukkah Lights: In the second task, students must perform a close reading of Hanukkah Lights by Philip M. Raskin (1880-1944) and answer multiple choice questions about the selection that when correct, reveal the code.
• Christmas 'Round the World: In the third task, students will read 8 fun facts about how Christmas is celebrated in different countries around the world and must identify the parts of speech of underlined words within the passages. When matched correctly, shaded boxes will reveal the third code.

The Pumpkin Patch Field Trip Unit is part of my Field Trip Unit Series. The series was created with homeschoolers in mind, but can be adapted to be used in a classroom as well. Field trips are a great way to supplement learning, but often homeschoolers don’t get any background information on the location of their field trip and want to enrich their experience by expanding the learning at home before and after the trip. These units help give information and fun activities before and after the field trip.

These units are available in PreK/Kinder, Elementary, and Middle & High School levels. All Pumpkin Patch Field Trip Units follow the same outline and the parent/teacher info sheet is the same for all three so that if you have children of several ages, you can seamlessly teach them together. This creative Winter Concert Decorations: Art Unit was designed to be printed and displayed as examples while you teach.
