Building Number Sense with Multiplying and Dividing Whole Numbers
By Jennifer Allain
After reading “Making Number Talks Matter” by Cathy Humphreys and Ruth Parker, I was inspired to build on their discussions of number sense.
**** I strongly recommend the book!
The goal of these activities is to ultimately get students thinking about numbers in more ways than one. When we ask them to find the amount without using pencil and paper, we ask them to find and create patterns. When I say “without counting” I mean that look they get—where they close one eye and squint and point to the numbers as they compute from their seats. Students will start to realize symmetry, groupings, and patterns.
These pages are intended for use with a projector but could be adjusted for small group instruction. The first page is intended for the initial display. Have students mentally solve the problem silently and independently. One students have an answer they can give a signal to show they have a number in mind—how you choose the signal is up to you but a simple thumbs up in front of their chest (so as not to distract or discourage their classmates) would suffice. The second page puts the same problem in the corner but leaves room for notes. Here is where you put student responses in any organized fashion you prefer—the important part here is to make sure you are recording ONLY the answers (keep your poker face!). Once you have student responses, ask students to defend their reasoning or find errors in words while you scribe their thinking on the board. This is a great opportunity for students to see that there is more than one way to approach a problem and come out with an accurate answer. As you progress, it is easy to transfer their thinking into more generalized “rules” in math.
There are 30 Multiplication problems and 30 Division problems.
Mental Math Task Cards | Middle School Activity
By Jennifer
These mental math task cards will allow you to easily incorporate number sense, math facts, and problem solving skills into your math lessons.
How to Set Up:
- Laminate and cut out task cards and organize with a metal ring
- Cut out task cards without laminating
What is Included:
Set #1: Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers
Set #2: Adding and Subtracting Fractions
Set #3: All Operations with Decimals
Set #4: All Operations with Integers
Set #5: Square Roots and Perfect Squares
How to Use this Resource:
You don't need to use all 80 cards at once!
Use them as REVIEW
Use them as a CLASSROOM STARTER
Use them for EARLY FINISHERS
They can be used over and over again because mental math should be practiced on a consistent basis
How Does this Look?
1. Whole Class: Read task cards aloud to students ONE STEP AT A TIME, and they answer on whiteboards or the recording sheet provided. This allows everyone to have 'think time'
2. Small Groups: Working with a small group, you can read task cards aloud to your students. They can also work together which encourages collaboration and teamwork
3. Partner Work: Students can pair up and read a task card to their partner. Their partner can answer on a whiteboard or the recording sheet provided
4. Independent: Have students work on one set at a time. This is great for early finishers
Benefits
- Opportunities for DIFFERENTIATION: Students can work on any of the 5 sets. Some are more difficult concepts than others. Students may need more practice in one area
- Consistent practice will improve math fact fluency and skills
- Your students will become more comfortable and feel more confident in their own abilities
Who Should Use These?
- Middle school students would benefit the most from this product
- Grades 5, 6, 7, 8
