Toxic and inconsiderate behaviors involve creating drama, dragging people down, manipulating or controlling others, being needy and making it all about you, using others to meet your personal needs, and being critical and judgmental of one’s self and others. These toxic and inconsiderate behaviors ultimately lead to negative effects including, but not limited to, holding people back from being happy, peaceful, and productive, causing unwelcoming feelings like stress, anger, depression, and sadness, which ultimately can harm one’s health, affect relationships, and overall sense of well-being. Many students (and adults) are oblivious to the toxic and inconsiderate behaviors and interactions they have with people in their lives.

✅ This resource includes 22 activities that exposes students to the wide range of toxic and inconsiderate behaviors that not only surround them, but that they experience everyday from people they interact with.

In this AVID game of four corners, students will have the opportunity to reflect on their own passions and see what they have in common with others. Students will have a discussion on different career explorations and interests. This game is a great way to build community and get students thinking about their future careers!

What's Included:

• 4 corner signs (strongly agree, agree, strongly disagree, disagree)
• 20 career related statements

Directions:

• Label each of the four corners of your room with signs for the following: Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree.
• Pose one of the four statements below to the students.
• They should move quietly to the corner that best represents their individual answer to the statement.
• Encourage students to think about their personal responses, not to just follow their friends or the crowd.
• Once students are in the corners, give them a couple of minutes to share their responses before posing the next statement.

Students will also learn about the following - Recognizing positive and negative self-talk, and tips to think about before you act. Two social stories that focus on showing self-control are included in this product. The social stories include comprehension questions throughout. Some of the questions require students to put their feet in the shoes of the characters. This product encourages students to understand the importance of showing self-control, self-discipline, making good decisions, the importance of having self-control, being a good friend, treating people the way you want to be treated, and changing situations for the better.

How does media effect one's self esteem?

This package contains 6 lessons and a culminating task that will address this topic.

The package is meant to be taught over at least five lessons. With discussion, each page should easily fill a 45- to 60-minute lesson block.

Each lesson, except the last, should be started with a gratitude journal page. The idea behind this it to help students see that they have a lot to be grateful for, regardless of what the media may portray to them. The journal pages shouldn’t take anymore than 5 minutes, max. It’s essential that young people develop empathy for those who are different to them. This resource examines the short story of a teen couple dating over summer break. Over the summer, Ava, girl who is not "out" yet, starts dating Bella, who is confidently "out" with her LGBTQ status. While on a date, they are spotted by another girl from school who witnesses their close connection and interactions. Fearful that she may be outed by this person upon returning to school, the story follows Ava’s journey.

Many LGBTQ+ students will find themselves struggling with the unknown. The way in which students respond to lesbian relationships could provide key support and understanding for their peers. Within our classrooms, we may have teens who are discovering their own sexual identity. This resource, and story, highlights positive ways that students might respond to their LGBTQ+ peers.

Through reading the passage and delving into reflection questions, your students will learn important ways to show empathy and support for others. Students will also recognize the benefits and risks of being an ally to LGBTQ+ individuals. They will also learn about the gravity of their own actions as they discuss the consequences of outing someone. Importantly, the anticipation guide includes ideas related to the story to help build background knowledge and to discuss related themes.
