The word Glimmers originates from Deb Dana, LCSW, psychotherapist, and author who coined the term. Glimmers which is the opposite of a trigger are those fleeting instances that bring us warmth and peace, offering a profound positive impact on our mental health. Below are the specific details for each individual session which can be used in isolation or as a comprehensive anger management curriculum.

SESSION OVERVIEW

This grief and loss curriculum comprises of EIGHT SESSIONS which include:

Welcome and Introduction: In the opening session, students are introduced to the group, fostering trust and setting expectations. Group-building exercises and activities are employed to establish a supportive environment.
Exploring Grief: This session delves into the concept of grief and its various manifestations. Through a grief collage reflection, students visually express and share their individual experiences, promoting understanding and empathy.
Letter to my Loved One: Participants will have the opportunity to express their emotions and thoughts through letter writing which allows them to process their feelings and find a personalized way to remember and honor the person they have lost.
Exploring Emotions: The focus shifts to identifying and managing emotions associated with grief. Engaging in emotion charades and discussion circles, students enhance their emotional literacy and communication skills.
Caring for Yourself: Emphasizing the importance of self-care in the grieving process, this session equips students with strategies for emotional well-being. Activities include creating a self-care toolbox and practicing mindfulness exercises.
My Grief Suitcase: Students examine their personal coping strategies and resilience, represented symbolically in a "Grief Suitcase." This reflective session promotes self-awareness and understanding of individual coping mechanisms.
My Memory Jar: Crafting a Memory Jar becomes a poignant activity to honor positive memories and celebrate the lives of loved ones. Personal reflections are incorporated into this creative and meaningful exercise.
Termination and Review: The concluding session focuses on group reflection, expressing gratitude, and discussing future support. Students engage in activities that encourage thoughtful reflection on the group journey, fostering a sense of closure and individual goal-setting.

Directions:

Put students into groups or breakout rooms of 4-6 students
Go over the directions with students:
Wait for the impromptu topic to show up on the screen (ex: convince your friends that applesauce is the best sunburn remedy)
Decide who in the group will start and that student will have 30 seconds to prepare for their speech after the topic is revealed
After 30 seconds the student will present their topic for 30 seconds

Optional Points:

Secretly give points/take away points from group members on a small whiteboard or notebook paper
Groups can earn by: Focusing on good voice, being creative with their responses, eye contact, posture, using an opening/closing statement, and making good points for your topic
Groups can lose points by: being a poor audience member, having poor posture, not using good voice, not using eye contact, using filler words: like, um, so, okay, yeah, kinda…
