Racism, Antiracism Craft, Self Portrait Skin Color Reflection Activity

By Class Plus

Help your students eliminate stereotypes, prejudices, and any form of racism. Through this activity, children will be encouraged to recognize that skin color is merely a physical characteristic. By imagining themselves with different skin colors and drawing pictures of themselves accordingly, they will understand that despite external differences, all individuals are unique and equally valuable.

This activity promotes the idea that there should be no room for injustice or discrimination based on skin color.

It is our responsibility to foster equality and promote antiracism from an early age.

This activity serves as an excellent addition to the Racism (Skin Color) Anti-Racism PowerPoint Presentation.

Instructions:

Ask your students to draw themselves in the first picture frame. In the subsequent frames, instruct them to draw themselves again, but with a different skin color or tone. Afterward, children should cut out each picture and staple them together to create a small book. Finally, encourage them to share their picture book and reflect on their emotions and thoughts while looking at themselves depicted in different skin colors or tones. They will realize that they are the same and their worth does not change.

This resource includes:

  • Page 1: How I Feel in a Different Race or Skin Color (Version 1)
  • Page 2: How I Feel in a Different Race or Skin Color (Version 2)
  • Page 3: How I Feel in a Different Race or Skin Color (Version 3)
  • Page 4: Empty Version

Glimmers Bulletin Board, Activities & powerpoint to Help kids find their joy!

By Until the Pieces Fit

Glimmers, which are the opposite of triggers are those moments of pure joy and serenity that light up their lives. I use the materials to share and practice glimmers with my students & after just 3 days back the kids have already started using the term "glimmer" when something brings them joy!

The word Glimmers originates from Deb Dana, LCSW, psychotherapist, and author who coined the term. Glimmers which is the opposite of a trigger are those fleeting instances that bring us warmth and peace, offering a profound positive impact on our mental health. With gratitude & written permission from Deb Dana, I'm thrilled to share these activities with fellow educators!

Materials Included:

PowerPoint: Utilize the included PowerPoint slide show to introduce the concept of Glimmers to your students. With 40 slides featuring real-life pictures, students can begin to recognize things that bring them Glimmers. It also helps create connection and shared interests, with their classmates.

Worksheets:

8 student pages

  • identify your glimmers (things that make me happy, included, helpful etc)

  • I feel a glimmer when....

  • track your glimmers

  • Things I see, taste and hear that bring me glimmers

Bulletin Board: Colorful lettering (multiple styles) to make a bulletin board for your classroom or your school. Cards are included for students (& staff) to share the things that bring them glimmers

2 pages of "me and my Glimmer". Take a picture of your students happy with their glimmers & attach to the page. A great reminder of the things that bring us joy.

8x11 Posters: Sprinkle your class or school with five 8x11 posters. Whether it's in your classroom, hallway, or on your door, these posters serve as tangible reminders to celebrate life's Glimmers.

Exploration Beyond: Curious to learn more? Dive into the enlightening USA Today article on Glimmers and their mental health benefits: Link to USA Today Article. You can also explore more about Deb Dana and her insights on regulation at Deb Dana's Website.

Join us in extending a heartfelt thank you to Deb Dana for her gracious permission to incorporate her trademarked concept into these materials, inspiring a wave of positivity and well-being.

Understanding All Emotions (Session #6)

By Mrs Bell The Crafty Counselor

The Board Game! Teach students how to recognize and respond to emotional situations. Included: 8x10 Game Board 60 Double-Sided Situation Cards Game Guidelines Game Pieces You will need a single dice to play. After teaching each emotion (sad, uneasy, surprised, angry, disgusted, and happy) play this game with your student or small group. Follow the game guidelines and enjoy playing this game with your students. Assembly: Print pages 7-16, double-sided, on cardstock. Laminate for extra durability. When cards speak of emotion words, they are referring to the words used on the posters in the first lesson “Teaching Emotions”. Refer to this if you are teaching the two lessons in conjunction with one another. If you are not, simply ask the student to provide synonyms for the emotions they are describing. Example: Emotion is sad. Emotion words could be blue, upset, fragile, unhappy, down, etc. There are two types of game pieces; flat and pop up. To create the flat pieces, cut on the dotted lines. To create the pop ups, cut on the dotted lines and fold on the solid lines. Feel free to substitute anything you would like for the game pieces. You could use coins, chips, the possibilities are endless, get creative! Game Rules: All players pick a game piece and begin in square #1: The first player rolls a single dice and moves the appropriate amount of spaces (1-6). If they land in a space that does not have a chameleon in it, the next person takes a turn. If they land on a space that has a chameleon on a flower vine, (example space #4, #7, #11, #15, #23, #26, #30, #34, #42), they pick a Situation Card from the pile. They read the situation out loud, and answer all of the questions (one to three questions per Situation Card). If they answer all questions correctly, they follow the worms to a higher space, closer to the food bowl (and the winners circle). If they answer incorrectly they stay put. If they land on a space that has a chameleon on a tree branch, (example space #9, #13, #20, #27, #31, #36, #45, #46) they automatically slide down to the lower level. They then pick a Situation Card, if they answer all parts correctly, they get another turn and roll the dice again. The game is over when someone reaches the winner’s circle.
