These trackers enable you to keep track of who's making:

  • Claims/Inferences
  • Supporting their Ideas with Evidence
  • Providing an Analysis or Explanation of their Claims/Inferences (Substance)
  • Volunteering their Ideas
  • Using Accountable Talk Stems
  • Engaging in Respectful Communication with Peers
  • Actively Listening
  • Making Connections
  • Building on Others’ Ideas
  • Not Contributing to Discussion
  • Not Using Accountable Talk Stems
  • Does Not Support Ideas with Evidence
  • Interrupting Others (as they speak)
  • Engaged in Side Activities
  • Lacking Substance

✅ Some trackers also provides you opportunities to jot down important key points that students have shared during discussion as well as some interventions needed to help them engage better in classroom talk.

✅ All this information can be tracked in these Classroom Talk / Accountable Talk Discussion Trackers. The data captured in these trackers can greatly help you provide the necessary interventions needed to support students in rigorous classroom talk. ▶️ 70 Rectangular Accountable Talk Stem Strips (5 strips for each of the 14 categories)

There are 5 rectangular Accountable Talk Sentence Starter Stem Strips for EACH category. Included are both COLORED and B&W Sentence Strips. These rectangular Accountable Talk Stem Strips provide students with access to five different option speech starters for each category.

How You Can Use the Stem Strips

✅ One great idea is to provide students with these rectangular stems and have them write their names on the back. During discussion, every time a student introduces/expresses his or her ideas using the sentence starter on the Accountable Talk Rectangular Stem Strip, they hand that stem strip to you. At the end of class, you will be able to see and take note of how many times each student used the stem starter during discussion when presenting ideas. (All you have to do is look at their names in the back). It's an AMAZING way to keep track of who’s using Accountable Talk during discussion and who isn’t, then provide intervention to ensure that students are using them. Students will also see that they are being held accountable for engaging in productive classroom talk using academic language!

✅ You can also display them on your bulletin boards so students can use them as a reference when engaging in productive, respectful talk!

*******************************

▶️ 32 Accountable Talk Speech Bubbles

This resource includes 32 Accountable Talk Speech Bubbles (Rainbow and B&W) that can be posted anywhere in the classroom where students can reference them during discussions. These Speech Bubbles will help students actively engage in meaningful, respectful discussion with their peers. They contain Accountable Talk discussion starters to encourage academic, productive, and respectful conversations between students. These will provide them with varied opportunities to practice, apply, and build "new" language proficiency.

▶️ 1 Peer Evaluation Accountable Talk Discussion Rubric / 3 Variations

This resource includes one Peer Evaluation Rubric in three variations - Same content. Editable versions are included, so you can modify in such a way that meets the needs of your students and instructional plans!

The Peer Evaluation Accountable Talk Discussion Rubric is meant for students to use and asses each other during Class Talk. Before beginning a discussion or debate, give each student a Peer Evaluation Rubric with another student’s name on it. (You can decide who will asses who, or you can just randomly write the names on Rubrics). Ask students to “secretly” observe and assess that student’s participation during the class discussion or debate. Students should not know who is assessing who so that evaluations of participation are fair. Throughout the discussion or debate, students will take meaningful notes of their classmates’ performances. At the end of the discussion or debate, give them 5 minutes to score the student whose name is on their Peer Evaluation Rubric. Finally, students can go up to the person they were observing and hand them the rubric. At the very end, the teacher collects the rubrics for review. This has worked so well for me! Students were always “on their toes." Students found it so exciting to be observed by classmates and also observe others.

▶️ 3 Accountable Talk Reflection Sheets (Print and Digital)

Students' reflection of classroom talk helps them identify areas and skills that need both improvement and enrichment. These reflection sheets encourage students to reflect about their experiences during collaborative talk and develop an appreciation for particular skills involved. These reflection sheets are student-friendly making it feasible for students of all levels to think and write about their overall participation in a collaborative learning environment. Reflection sheets contain images, sentence starters, and questions to really help students think about their learning. They are especially student-friendly for SPED and ELL students!

Spanish Interpersonal Speaking 16 Activities for Conversations by Common Themes

By Specialty Spanish

Are your students hesitant to speak in Spanish in class? Are conversations and interpersonal speaking challenging for them? Are you worried about how to prepare them for tests like the Seal of Biliteracy and AP Spanish Exams? Do you teach multiple levels of Spanish? Then this bundle is for you!

This bundle contains 16 activities and 8 of the most common themes taught in every curriculum!

  • Childhood
  • Daily Routines
  • Clothing and Shopping
  • Food and Restaurants
  • Travel and Vacations
  • Accidents and Injuries
  • The Future
  • The Environment

There are 8 Guided Conversation activities. Guided Conversations provide a general outline for students to use. It helps them keep the conversation going with a partner so they can continue to create with language! They are differentiated between Novice High and Intermediate versions. The Novice versions have helpful vocabulary on their guides. And they can be used and re-used over and over! Switch partners, switch roles, use them at different points in the unit... and use them as review for more advanced students! Teacher notes make these a breeze to use!

There are 8 Integrated Listening and Speaking activities. The themes are the same 8 themes as the Guided Conversations. These ILS activities contain audio links. Students listen and then record their response. These activities are very much like the AAPPL and STAMP tests and are a great pre-cursor for the Simulated Conversation on the AP Spanish test. The audio links are already recorded for you, but the teacher script is also included in case you want to record your own voice, or show students what they heard when going over their responses. Each theme has 2 activities. There are 5 audio prompts in each (so a total of 10 per theme.) The 2nd activity is meant to be a bit more challenging. You can use that to differentiate for students, or use the 2nd activity later in the unit!

Who Can Use This Resource:

  • Students in Year 2 and up (Novice High and Intermediate)

How Do I Use This Resource?

  • The included teacher notes will provide all of these suggestions
  • Students will work in partners with guided conversations
  • Students can switch roles and also switch partners with the guided conversations to make them reusable countless times!
  • Students work alone with the ILS activities
  • They listen and respond, and record their responses
  • These activities can be used for practice or for assessment
  • They are all ready to print or post- no teacher prep!

What's Included?

  • Teacher Notes for Both Kinds of Activities to explain exactly how to use them
  • 8 Guided Conversation Themes (Each theme has 4 conversations included, so there are a total of 32 conversations)
  • 8 Integrated Listening and Speaking Activities (ILS) (Each theme has 2 activities with 10 prompts: so 16 activities and 160 prompts)

Social Skills Text Messages | Text Messaging | Communication Skills Activities

About This Resource

★ Social Skills Text Messages

★ Features 20 Text Messaging Worksheets in 2 Variations

★ Print and Digital (PDF and Google Slides)

★ Suitable for Upper Elementary, Middle, and High School

★ Sample Responses included

★ Social Emotional Learning

This resource includes:

☆ 20 Text Message Worksheets (with Background Information)

☆ 20 Text Message Worksheets (without Background Information)

☆ Sample Responses

☆ Google Slide Link

Teens today are constantly connected through their cell phones, with texting being one of the primary ways they communicate. While texting makes it easy to stay in touch, it also comes with challenges, as tone and intent can often be misunderstood without face-to-face interaction. Developing strong social skills for texting is essential to ensure that messages are clear, respectful, and considerate of others' feelings. By practicing thoughtful communication, teens can navigate social situations more effectively and avoid unnecessary conflicts or misunderstandings.

This resource features 20 different text conversations designed to help students develop their communication and social skills. Each conversation comes in two versions:

★ Without background information for students ready to respond on their own.

★ With background information included at the bottom of the worksheet to provide additional context and support for thoughtful responses.

The background information is great for students who need extra help understanding the situation and encourages them to respond while considering others' feelings and social dynamics. This format makes it easy to differentiate and meet students' individual needs.

Sample responses are included to support teachers in guiding discussions and providing examples for students.

This worksheet is perfect for practicing empathy, improving social skills, and learning how to handle everyday interactions with care and thoughtfulness.

Spanish Accidents & Injuries Activity Bundle for Speaking, Listening and Writing

By Specialty Spanish

Not sure how to start making proficiency a focus in your Spanish classes? Start here with this bundle of Spanish Accidents and Injuries Proficiency-Building Activities! Speaking, Writing and Listening are scaffolded and pre-differentiated with activities that stay with a familiar theme, Accidents and Injuries  The scaffolds and familiar theme help students find the courage they need to fully participate and truly build skills! Interpersonal Listening, Speaking and Presentational Writing Activities are all included!

Guided Conversations:

Guided Convos provide a scenario about a familiar topic and an outline for students to use to keep the conversation going.   Students work with a partner and choose the role of Person A or Person B. They can trade roles, trade partners, or even do the same exact conversation again!  They never turn out the same way!  Students report feeling much more confident and able to keep conversations going after practicing a few times!

These conversations have 2 different versions for Novice High students and 2 different versions for Intermediate Low students.

Integrated Listening & Speaking:

ILS activities are done alone.  Students will listen to a recording, and be given instructions for how to respond.  They might hear: “Tell me about….” Or “Ask me questions about…” .  These activities mimic the speaking/listening portion of many popular Seal of Biliteracy Tests.

There is a pre-made student activity that requires no language lab!  If you have a language lab or some other kind of recording software, the teacher script will allow you to record the audio for students if you desire.

There are 2 activities in this resource, each with 5 prompts.  They are designed so that the first activity is a bit easier and the 2nd one  a bit more challenging.  Use with different levels or at the beginning and end of a unit!

✍️Scenario Task Cards:

Scenario Task Cards are my go-to for lots of things!  I display one at the beginning of every class and ask students to take turns talking about the scenario.   But I also use them as a lesson plan for a class activity!  I have students change partners and have them tell a story about 5 times in a row, each time with a new scenario and a new partner.  Then students switch roles.  Listeners become the speakers.  Finally, sometimes I print the scenarios and ask students to write about them in class or for homework!

This resource is also included in Google Slides! Text boxes have already been created to make it easier for you and your students! Each slide includes two instruction solution tabs for when students accidentally delete text boxes and when they want to zoom in (to enlarge worksheets). It's super helpful for students who are not that familiar with how to use Google Slides or need the extra assistance.

*******************************

Many students grapple with effective communication, often because they feel more at ease with texting and technology than engaging in face-to-face conversations. Additionally, a lack of adult role models demonstrating good listening and fostering productive discussions, speech or communication disorders, and a lack of formal instruction in effective communication may contribute to these challenges. Equipping young individuals with effective communication skills is crucial for fostering healthy relationships, peaceful conflict resolution, academic success, and future employment. This resource offers diverse opportunities for imparting these essential skills to your students!

This resource presents 40 real-life scenarios, offering students many opportunities to hone their communication skills in challenging situations, even when experiencing emotions like anger, hurt, betrayal, or insecurity. Through these scenarios, students can engage in discussions, gain insights, and participate in role-playing exercises that explore diverse and effective approaches to expressing thoughts and emotions in a respectful and mature manner, fostering problem-solving skills. This tool serves as an excellent platform for students to refine their ability to "filter their thoughts" effectively.

The Scenario Task Cards and Worksheets encompass four scenarios for EACH of the following 10 topics:

⭐ Demonstrating Empathy

⭐ Blame-Free Communication

⭐ Responding to Criticism

⭐ Sensitive Expression

⭐ Exercising Self-Control

⭐ Negotiating a Compromise

⭐ Offering Good Advice

⭐ Words of Encouragement

⭐ Polite Disagreement

⭐ Demonstrating Maturity

▶️ 40 Scenario Task Cards (COLORED and B&W)

✅ Each Task Card includes one scenario followed by a question unique to the scenario/situation.

✅ These Scenario Task Cards are versatile and can be incorporated into various teaching contexts, such as larger lessons, guided small groups, whole-class discussions, partner discussions before presenting to the entire group, or even in one-on-one sessions with a teacher, guidance counselor, or parent/guardian. Each of the four Task Card variations features the same set of scenarios.

✅ You can print the Task Cards out on gloss paper or regular paper and laminate. You may also organize them in a binder ring.

How/When To Use the Scenario Task Cards

  • Role-Playing: Students have the opportunity to work together in pairs or groups, engaging in role-playing exercises to enact a range of scenarios and showcase appropriate responses. These activities serve as practical demonstrations of how to navigate challenging situations with effective communication. Through role-playing, students can enhance their skills in handling scenarios that require thoughtful filtering of their thoughts, responding maturely, and communicating effectively. Ultimately, this activity fosters improvement in confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills.
  • Icebreaker: This can be a great way to start a meeting, training session, or team-building activity. It’s also a great way to get students to get to know each other and buy into the purpose of an upcoming activity or lesson.
  • Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes then perform the skits for the class.
  • Writing Response: Students can read a given scenario and articulate their responses in writing. Afterwards, they can exchange papers with a partner who will review their responses and assess whether they agree or disagree with the approaches taken in these real-life situations. The evaluation may focus on the appropriateness of problem-solving approaches, particularly when emotions like anger are involved. Additionally, partners can suggest alternative solutions and provide recommendations on effective communication strategies for navigating through challenging situations.
  • Discussion: Students can engage in group or whole-class discussions about the Scenario Task Cards. Topics of discussion may include questions such as, "How can you express your feelings without causing harm to the listener's feelings?" or "In what ways can you communicate your thoughts maturely?" and "How do you effectively filter your thoughts?" These discussions provide a platform for exploring various communication strategies and promoting thoughtful reflection on expressing emotions and thoughts in a respectful and mature manner.

▶️ 40 Scenario Worksheets (same scenarios in the Task Cards)

✅ This resource additionally provides 40 Scenario WORKSHEETS with lines, enabling students to express their responses in writing. These worksheets feature the same scenarios as the Task Cards, offering students an excellent opportunity to showcase how they would communicate effectively in challenging situations.

✅ Print and Digital Worksheets (PDF and Google Slides)

▶️ List of Scenarios (Easy Access for Teachers – 6 pages)

The package also includes a 6-page comprehensive LIST OF SCENARIOS, facilitating easier access for teachers to read and choose scenarios for use. These scenarios align with those presented in the Task Cards.

Introducing methods to help students know their audience when preparing for a speech has never been easier! This lesson guides students through a step-by-step process of understanding who their audience will be and how to prepare accordingly. When a high school student begins a public speaking unit, it is quite often the first time he or she has been required to speak in public, other than the basic Show and Tell in elementary school.

Therefore, it is important to make sure the students become familiar with the basics of how to stand, speak, move, and make eye contact during any type of public speaking situation. This lesson is designed to help the students with all aspects of understanding their audience, so they can prepare their presentation accordingly.

The slide show, and worksheets allow students to practice and develop their public speaking skills. The worksheets reinforce guided note-taking techniques when used in conjunction with the slide show. The detailed lesson plans make implementing public speaking, speech and debate curriculum easy for teachers.

These no-prep lessons are adaptable for in-class instruction, distance learning, or independent student work. The PowerPoints can also be presented as whole class instruction or assigned for students to complete at home.

All materials are available in both Google Drive™ and print formats, ensuring easy access for all students.
